When have Easts choked before?
They were simply beaten last year by a side that was better
Regardless of who is the better team on the day my point i was making is that easts dont have a flattering record in the finals, as with previous seasons like this year, have had the troops & depth that could go all the way but have stumbled in the matches that counted. With that in mind as well as being on track for a claytons cup i believe will place even more pressure come finals time. Maybe i wasnt politically correct in saying they "choked" in previous seasons, but finals footy is a different beast and it doesnt matter how well you went thru the year it comes down to whose "on" or who isnt on the day. Take Oakdale in 2010 ,were hot favourites to take out the title only to be rolled by picton in the major semi , (sorry TC).

Des hasler made a good point about benchmark teams and that is the ones who are in the mix & have been there and done it before , hence why i think Oakdale & Thirlmere will be dangers , Easts are still the team to beat but will the eagles overcome the pressure, will they rise above the occasion , like i said time will tell.

Spuds surprise win over Warragamba Wombats Save
http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/236138/spuds-surprise-win-over-warragamba-wombats/?cs=264

By Lauren Wright
Aug. 22, 2012, midnight

IN a surprise end to the season, Robertson Spuds beat Warragamba 48-10 on Sunday. It was a result that neither spectators or players had expected and Spuds captain Doug Tilly said it was a good way to finish the season.

"It was crazy, it was just a god second half," he said.

Warragamba were assured of third place no matter the result of Sunday's match and with nothing to play for they came out scored two quick tries.

Tilly said they failed to hang onto the ball early in the match but quickly turned it around.

Matt Mauger, Robertson's leading try scorer for the season put in another big performance to bag four tries on Sunday and Justin Day also scored his first try for the year.

"Everything went right. The forwards went forward. They were blitzing it and making metres every time."

Tilly said Clark Walker and Mauger both had good games as did Chris Freere a "little fella who came off the bench and made about 30 tackles."

Robertson finished fourth and will play Macarthur Bulls on Saturday afternoon at Mittagong.

"They'll be pretty angry like they always are," Tilly said.

The Spuds will find minor premiers Macarthur Bulls a tough challenge, however Robertson of all second division teams have come closest to beating the Bulls all season.

In their last meeting, they just missed out on taking the points after going down 28-26.

If they lose of Saturday, they will still have another chance get through to the grand final which gives the Spuds some breathing space.

Till said the key for Saturday would be ball control.

"Just hang onto the ball. We can't start the same way as we did on Sunday. We looked goof for one set and the next set threw the ball away. If we can hang onto the ball I think we're a chance."

Young Lions ready to go after back-to-back premierships

Saxon Sell makes a break for Mittagong.

.
MITTAGONG under-18 division one Lions are still in the hunt for back to back premierships after they finished in second spot. The young Lions beat Narellan 80-7 on Sunday after the Jets turned up with just 11 players.

In fifth place, a win could have pushed Narellan up into the top four and Lions coach Carl Davey said it was difficult for his team to keep focus for the full 70 minutes.

"The boys played as well as they could. It was really hard for them to maintain intensity against a team that knew they had nothing to lose," he said.

"We had to try to keep out basic structure and a lot of tries were scored off good set plays."

For a team that was languishing in last place on the ladder after the fourth round, Davey said to finish second was an excellent result for the team and a credit to their skill and commitment.

The Lions have not had a challenging match since Narellan Jets in round 11 where they were defeated 24-20 and Davey said the soft run into the semis could possible have a negative impact on the team's preparation.

"The key for the guys will be really committing at training. With a soft run into the semis, getting that intensity, focus and drive will be crucial. It's going to depend on whose on the day. The boys have to be really on song."

Davey has previously said that the competition this was much closer than in past seasons and that any team in the top four has the potential to win.

They will face either Camden or Macarthur Bulls next weekend and with this weekend off, Davey said they would use the time to take care of niggling injuries and prepare themselves.

"The boys like to play Camden or Macarthur Bulls. Our game plan and structure doesn't change that much no matter who we play."

Mittagong will welcome back Brad Larter for the finals and Davey said if their core group which also included Saxon sell, Ricky Garard, Mitchell Toovery and Rhyce McLaren continued to play well, their chances of a second consecutive premiership were good.

"It's a credit to the boys from where we were at the start of the season with injuries and lack of numbers. It's really fantastic and it doesn't happen without the effort and support of parents and coaching staff."

Davey said if the boys could get their mental state right, it would be a good start in the hunt for the premiership.

Mittagong have had a strong surge in the second half of the season after a number of players returned from injury.

Local Lion a future Tigers star

Brad Larter in action for the West Tigers.

.
LOCAL footballer Brad Larter was selected to play for the West Tigers under-18 team this year. The Mittagong Lions under-18 division one player captained the West Tigers team who toured Queensland last month and played Gold Coast Titans.Last season, playing up a year, he represented West Tigers as a 16-year-old playing half back.He was selected for the West Tigers elite program which also toured Queensland.

The Moss Vale and Mittagong junior has been playing in junior NRL representative teams for the past two years and is currently in pre-season training for the under-18 SG Ball trials in October.Larter is one of many talented Group 6 juniors who have gone into the West Tigers program.West Tigers development officer Ben Rodgers has given the boys off field assistance where they learn about diet, exercise and their conduct.

Larter is in a program which will tutor him up to the end of the under-20s NRL competition.

His father, Mark Larter, said he and his wife very very appreciative of the local junior coaches who have volunteered their time to pass on their knowledge to Brad.

"There are a few local boys in the junior NRL system now and the local junior coaches should be congratulated as they are doing a great job," he said.

Brad has not played much football for Mittagong this season due to injury but he will return to the paddock for the under-18 finals which start next week.

The Mittagong under-18s division one team are aiming for back to back premierships.

Mark Larter said he did not remember a local team achieving this before.

"With a new look team this season the coaches are working very hard and again their tuition is all voluntary and should be commended. I just hope the young Lions players recognise the work that is put into them and commit to the task which is to achieve back to back premierships," he said.

Just a quick question before the semis.

As it seems that the coaches of the top 5 teams would be secure for next year what of the chasing pack? Which teams do you think would be on the look out for a new coach or need new blood?

Has Drew done enough to get offered another run or will the Roos look in another direction,

same goes for The Oaks who had Riddell (for a couple of games), Dyvoner, Sampson,

Camden, 3 years no semis and good recruitment, especially this year,

and possibly Picton a lot of home grown talent but by the sounds of the people from Picton on the forum, not enough commitment?

What does everyone think?

Also of the teams out of the semis does anyone know of players moving to other clubs / comps or retiring?

I think City will give Dalton another season, next years results will be make or break for him. Camdens Coach De Ubago will be moving on I think as will Mark Lowe at The Oaks. Picton more than likely to opt for fresh blood. As for semi final teams TBA....

As an outsider looking in, Camden look like they need one from the old brigade to get the club back in line. A decade without a premiership is a long time for them. Mark and all the cabra boys kept the club alive, and with all the juniors they have, I think it's high time to shell out a bit of coin.

Bundanoon defeated Bargo tonite in 3rd grade. Unsure of the score.

East are currently leading Jamberoo 34-0 at half time.

Why did the Group decide to make it top 8 for these boys?

Yeah big game, we came out of today very unscathed. Slow game to say the least.
thanks to the eagles reggies too, formed a guard for us, and clapped us on, it didn't go un-noticed, good sporting gesture.

Just watched a video of the game and the Narellan number 12 was hard done by! Got ten for getting punched blatenly twice and no retaliation, got ten for chasing the player that punched him the second time and all he done was clench a fist! And got send for the game for Grtting tackled! Worst refereeing performance of the year off mr cini! Will be lucky to get the under 11's next week after judiciary get ahold of the video
