Congratulations to the Eagles and Bulls on their senior triumphs today, and to Camden & Thirlmere for their wins in the U/18A and U/18B competitions respectively.
Surely the Clayton Cup, the trophy awarded to the best overall side in the whole of the CRL, will now be a formality for the Eagles 1st Grade team.

Spuds fall short at final hurdle

The Spuds disappointment is evident as captain Doug Tilly leaves the field. Photo by Roy Truscott

It was heartache again for Robertson Spuds as they were left on the wrong end of the scoreline against Macarthur Bulls in the grand final yesterday.

After a devastating loss in the semi-finals, many thought grand final day would finally be the day the Bulls were beaten.

But, despite a courageous effort from the Spuds, they went down to the undefeated premiers.

The day started well for Robertson when Matt Mauger made a break to score in the opening 10 minutes.

Mitchell Wright then added another two tries before the break and Robertson went into half-time with a 14-4 lead.

But once again their opening 15 minutes curse allowed the Bulls back in the game and from there they were unstoppable.

A try to Matt Hammond off a clever kick gave the Spuds some hope with just under 20 minutes to go and put them within two points before the Bulls scored another late try.

Spuds captain Doug Tilly said it was devastating to come so close again and fall short at the final hurdle.

"They were the best team I guess. I think we threw it away for ourselves a little bit. They get on a roll, they just get that steam up and off they go," he said.

"If a couple of little things went our way I think we could have had them. We really stuck it to them; just the bounce of the ball. Bit cliche I guess, but that's how it was."

Robertson's day was made even harder in the second half with the majority of penalties going against them, often at crucial times.

"Hopefully we can go again next year and really stick it to them," Tilly said.

"There's going to be a lot of retirements I think, but a few young fellas are coming through."

In what was an amazing effort from all the Spuds, Tilly said Wright had a fantastic game, as did Jesse Mauger in defence.

"All the boys - Justin Day, Aaron de Jager - played well. There's a big list of blokes, a couple of young blokes came off the bench. Nick Young and Chris Freere really stood up today. Everyone really stuck their hand up today and had a go."

In other matches at Picton yesterday, Moss Vale under-18s division two and Mittagong under-18s division one went down to Thirlmere and Camden respectively.

Both were close matches with the Dragons losing by four while the Lions, after losing a couple of key players, went down by just two.

Well done to all grand final winners! Was a great day out at picton.
Great work by the Eagles... they never really looked like losing (the whole year)

18's was a good contest also...

and looks like a few old heads went out winners with the bulls 2nd division also...
(are they moving up next year?)

I have to disagree it being a great day.

First Grade was a dead affair, which I guess was due to Eagles early domination. The crowd was disappointing, no noise at all and the footy told a sad tale.

Picton is a good ground to play GFs but with Campbelltown having a large proportion of teams in the GFs is not Camden a closer and better option? 2011 had more excitement, larger crowd (and more arrests!!!)

Bring back the parachutists too !!!

It's a Group 6 Competition not a Wests JL one.

Group 6 extends from Campbelltown to Bundanoon now.

While there were 3 teams from the "Wests area" - Eagles (1st & Reserve Grade) & Mac Bulls (2nd Div) - there were 7 from the "Group 6 area" - Thirlmere (1st & 18-2's), Robbo (2nd Div), Camden (Reserves & 18-1's), Mittagong (18-1's) and Mossy (18-2's).

Are you saying that Campbelltown teams aren't willing to travel?

I think the day was a great day, especially for our guys, the atmosphere probably wasn't what it could be but most supporters where behind both goal posts due to having a beer, the beer could of been on the other side which would of increased the atmosphere, the score blowing out 26 Nil early didn't help, our guys played awesome!

Also didn't help that only mid strength beer was on sale.

Anyway what happened to you today BD. why didn't you come down to the pub today?

Also full credit to the camden fans yesterday. We're giving it to us delux during the game but were full of praise afterwards. Did not expect that.

Yes!

Seems like no body likes to travel. The old heads I was with commented that in the 90's and even early 2000's the crowd at GF at Picton would have been 5 or 6 deep, the road side would have been full with people on blankets and the ends would have been likewise. Kick off 1st grade and it was like a ghost town in comparison.

And yes the competition extends from Campbelltown to Bundanoon but the majority of the people live in Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown vicinity.

The crowd for the 1st grade game was probably split 50/50.

Maybe even 60/40 in Thirlmeres way.

Why is it the people from campbelltowns fault that no one else stayed around.

I play reggies for the eagles and we had a bigger crowd than the 1st grade game.

But all the Eagles fans stayed. Everyone else had left by half time of 1st grade.

The team I was most impressed with yesterday was Macarthur Bulls. They seemed very excited with their win; they were nice guys and showed great sportsmanship. They insisted on having a joint photo taken with Robbo - my favourite moment of the day.

Yes it was a sad ending for Mick Bradstock, scoring the 1st try of the day, and then breaking his arm around the 25 minute mark of the game, looks like an operation is needed, we Mick all the best, he has been a great club man and it was a shame he couldn't spend last night with the guys, stay tuned as we may have something for Mick in the next couple of weeks!

Would this be the first time in Group 6 grand finals where the number 8 has scored the first try in both reserve and 1st grades?
