18's Macarthur Bulls 32 - Narellan Jets 22. Good 1st half of footy from both sides leaving Bulls ahead 20-6 at half-time, before Narellan came out strong putting a few tries on the Bulls in the 2nd half. Thanks to Oakdale for all the help. :)

A grade Picton 20, Mittagong 6.
Great return to form the magpies in 1st grade. Special mention to Luke Monds who had the 6 on his back. Lots of pressure for a kid who was in the 16s last year, but he handled it like a veteran and scored the try that gave us the lead. Not a bad effort for a kid in just his 17th year of life.

A much improved effort all round from our boys. They were committed and focussed for the whole 80 minutes. Great attitude especially given we had 3 players pull out this morning.

Our reserves went down 38-22 after the game was 16-16 with about 20 to go. Even the return of Matt McPherson, one of the hardest men to ever wear the black and white, couldn't save us from ourselves in the end. He did score a try and pull off a couple great shots though.

Our 18s suffered their first loss against a quality Lions team. I'm assuming young Mondsy will play 18s this year even though he handles 1st grade with ease today. If so, he will give them a huge lift.

Please don't tell me it was Nick Taylor that pulled out, otherwise i can see a rant coming forth
Congrats on the win, is Luke Monds the young Red headed kid i've been hearing about? I was speaking to a referee today and he said that your five eight killed it against Camden last week.

Baby steps in the right direction today for the workers. We are hardly at the level we want to be, but a wise man knows that you don't win comps in April.
The Jetters were good again, and i thought the game was pretty good.
Way too many penalties though. We saw 2 differential scrum penalties today, that went against the attacking side. WTF?

Ha ha, good guess Tommy. No, no rant. I will maintain my stance of neither defending nor commenting on Nick. He was one of three players that pulled out with flu.

My man crush on Chris Young grew today. He was unstoppable. A couple positional changes made a big difference too. Ecky went from halfback to fullback and gave us a lot more than in the first 3 games.

Today was young Mondsy's first game with us for the year. He's just come back to Picton now that jersey flegg is over. I'm not sure who the young red head would be you've heard about. Our five eighth before today has been Michael Graham, he's come to us from Appin and has played very well. He was suspended today after fighting against Camden last week. So in his first game in seniors Luke was drafted straight into the top grade.
It's exciting to see such a gifted junior. Justin Brooker and Beau Scott were the best juniors I've seen in my time. Brooker played 50 odd NRL games and a couple seasons in pommy super league. I don't need to tell you what Beau Scott's done. This kid is as good as those two at the same age, maybe better. My first couple years in grade I played with his dad Willy who was a genius (now 18s coach), top 3 best players I ever played with, but he was little. Luke has all his speed and skill, but he's already about 5'10" and probably 85kg. Big things to come.

How'd you guys go about beating Mittagong? Did you rush the Borgs? Did Warrick Carter play?
Any other news from the games this weekend?
I know City still got beaten by Thirlmere, but 26-12, it's much more respectable than what has been going on lately.

Both the Borgs were a bit quiet overall, dangerous in patches but rarely. Maybe they were a bit bogged down in the wet. Maybe they just didn't get the go forward they needed. Our forwards definitely outplayed theirs. Crouch had his best game so far and Youngy playing his preferred position of 2nd row was busting tackles at will.
Carter did play. Again, I think we just limited his chances. He did a couple good things. He's definitely a quality player. Great hands.

We won 36-16 very scrappy game and def didn't play our best game of the season but still came away with the win and 2 points so that's the main thing I guess and now we the week off to fix a few things up ...

Embarrassing loss for Lions

MITTAGONG Lions suffered an embarrassing loss to Picton yesterday afternoon, giving the Magpies their first win of the season with a 20-6 victory. The Lions found themselves in front early with a try to Matt Thorpe. But that was where their luck ended.Picton evened the score just before halftime to leave the scores tied 6-6 at the break. The Lions never really looked like scoring in the second half and the Magpies claimed their first win of 2012.Coach Scott Borg said it was a disappointing performance, given they had smashed last year's premiers Oakdale the previous week.

"Coming off last week's win, beating the premiers to playing Picton who haven't won a game yet and to pull out a performance like that it's terrible," he said.

In very different conditions from last week, with the rain a constant problem, Mittagong hurt themselves by dropping the ball which gifted Picton easy possession.

"It (wet weather) sort of evens up the game a fair bit but our enthusiasm just wasn't there," he said,

Borg said the Lions went into the match overly confident.

"Our enthusiasm wasn't there. We came out thinking that we had an easy win and they came out and pulled our pants down. Congratulations to them."

The penalty count also continued to pile up against Mittagong, but Borg said it still came down to their own mistakes.

"You can blame that (penalty count) but a lot of that's just down to us not completing our tackles and you put yourselves in the situation to get bad penalties so I think the blame is ours and not the referees."

Tensions boiled over and comments made to the referee by Lions players earned them another mark against their name. With the score 12-6, Picton took the two points on offer and gave themselves a eight point buffer.

"I don't think they were happy with the calls but the referee makes mistakes as well so you can't get angry at the referee. It's our own fault and we've just got to deal with it," Borg said.

Missed tackles also hurt the Lions and Borg said their defence needed to improve before this weekend's clash against Camden.

"Just making contact in tackles, they just ran over the top of us a lot of the time. A big game against Camden [who have] a big pack so we have to make sure we are hitting hard and dominating the ruck."

Borg also said the lack of enthusiasm from the Lions was a problem.

"Just from the start you could tell the difference with no talk. Our warm up was good, we trained well during the week but just didn't come out," he said.

"I think it's all just down to attitude. Hopefully we pick it up next week."

Borg said there were no standouts in a match where everyone struggled against a Picton said who had all the momentum.

"I think everyone's got to work on their game a little bit."

Mossy's 'scrappy start'

BY LAUREN WRIGHT

AFTER the turmoil of the week before, Moss Vale came away with a "scrappy" 26-12 win over Bargo Bunnies at home on Sunday.

Despite the win, skipper Damien Barton said it was not their best performance but was pleased with the defence.

The Dragons were always in control of the match and led 16-6 at halftime.

Winger Brad Mennie bagged two tries and Josh Champion in the centres also scored for Moss Vale.

Barton said their ball control and line speed on the day were not up to scratch.

"Our ball control and line speed were terrible (but) our defence was good. That's what kept us in front," he said.

Barton said a number of players had their best games of the season, but while there were good individual performances, it was not the team effort he hoped for.

"Our front rowers Matt Burke and Mitchell Conquest played well and Josh Champion in the centres," he said,

Up against Macarthur Bulls this weekend, Barton said they would need to improve their "line speed in defence and not drop so much ball" if they were to come away with the win.

Brad Meuleman and Jack Webb, who were suspended for the match will return for Moss Vale this weekend.
