RUGBY League in the Highlands is in for a big boost this year with the four major clubs banding together. With some of the smaller clubs struggling to attract new players, particularly in the juniors, Group 6 Executive Officer Steve Hazleton said the Spuds, Lions, Dragons and Kookaburras will now be known as the Southern Highlands Rugby League Community. He said the clubs would meet regularly throughout the season to discuss new initiatives for promoting league within the region.

"They're working together and striving to improve registration for rugby league," Hazleton said.

"I find that pretty exciting. They're meeting regularly to see how they can help each other."

"The clubs have the full support of Group 6 and Country Rugby League (CRL). It's a combined effort to try and help small clubs and get more kids playing rugby league."

Group 6 have also recruited former NRL and international player Harvey Howard as head coach for the junior clubs in the Highlands and Hazleton said he would be a key figure throughout the year.

"He's working with us to try and promote rugby league in the area," he said.

As part of the recruitment drive, the Highlands will host the West Tigers on January 30 and 31.

The Tigers have so far promised to send the top NRL squad, minus Benji Marshall who will be unavailable due to All Stars duties.Hazleton said it was something they had been trying to arrange for awhile and was excited about some of the top NRL players visiting the region to promote league.

The Tigers will host and Come and Try clinic on January 30 at Loseby Park from 4-6pm.It is for anyone between 4-18 years of age, with no cost, but anyone interested will need to arrive at 3.30 to register.Visit www.Arldevelopment .com/group6 to register. The Tigers players will then visit schools in the area on Tuesday, January 31.

Great initiative by the Southern Clubs - this will definitely be of benefit to the Southern Highlands with the clubs presenting a solid front. There are some very dedicated, hard working volunteers down there with commonsense and plently of experience.

LEARN to play like a Tiger. The Wests Tigers will be in the Wingecarribee next week for two days to promote to the young people of the region rugby league and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The squad will arrive in Bowral on Sunday evening before holding the Wests Tigers Come and Try Rugby League Clinic on Monday between 4pm and 6pm.

Young players between four and 18-years-old can participate in the free clinic at Loseby Park.

Almost the entire Wests Tigers squad will be in the Highlands for the clinic, including captain Robbie Farah and coach Tim Sheens.

The only players from the roster who won’t be coming will be star five-eighth Benji Marshall and new signing Adam Blair, who have representative commitments with the NRL All Stars.

Clinic participants also receive a free football and will have the chance to learn and practice some of the core skills of the game with the Tigers squad before a free barbecue at 6pm.

The Tigers skipper said his side was looking forward to spending some time in the Highlands.

“The Southern Highlands is a beautiful area so it will be good as a playing group to not only be able to train there but also enjoy what the region has to offer,” he said.

“The coaching clinic is a great way for children to be able to mix with the players in a fun environment and try out their rugby league skills.”

Farah said the skills clinics would suit young players of all skill levels.

“It doesn’t matter if you have never played the game before, it is all about getting outside and having a go,” he said.

On Tuesday, the team will break up into small groups to visit 10 schools in the region.

Registration for the clinic is at 3.30pm on Monday at Loseby Park. Visit www.arldevelopment.com/group6

to register before this Saturday, or call ARL development officer Jake Brightwell on 0448 890 017.

Well it looks like the SOS protest movement is making a difference because I hear that when these Come & Try Clinics were being discussed last year, Wests Tigers had no intention of sending any first graders just some U/20's.

This will be great for the kids in the Southern Highlands - especially considering the way the AFL has been blitzing the schools last year. Good to see West Tigers stepping up. I hope the kids have a great time!

The popularity of the Wests Tigers was very evident at a ‘Come and Try Rugby League Day’ at Loseby Party, Bowral.

The home ground of the Bowral Kookaburras in the Group 6 Junior Country Rugby League was swamped with more than 300 young children who enjoyed the opportunity to meet players from the Wests Tigers NRL squad.

Junior rugby league clubs Mittagong Lions, Moss Vale Dragons, Bowral Kookaburras and Robertson Spuddies also set up marquees to encourage children to join their clubs.

Country Rugby League Development Officer Scott Borg said the afternoon was an outstanding success.

“The response we had to the clinic was amazing. Everyone was excited to see the players who were more than willing to take part in the sessions and have photos with the kids,’’ Borg said.

“We like to thank the Wests Tigers players for coming down to the Southern Highlands to help promote junior rugby league in the area.”

Wests Tigers footballs, posters and balloons were handed out along with membership brochures before the players sat down for an autograph session.

The clinic was all part of a two day Southern Highlands Blitz being undertaken by Wests Tigers. Tomorrow (Tuesday), the players will visit several schools to speak to children about junior league and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Wests Tigers will visit the following schools tomorrow Wollondilly Anglican College, Hill Top PS, Colo Vale PS, St Thomas Aquinas, Bowral PS, Mittagong PS, St Michael Mittagong, Moss Vale PS, Moss Vale HS, Robertson PS.

The players will then back up to do it all again at the annual Balmain Blitz (Monday, February 6) and Campbelltown Blitz (Monday, February 13).

This is fantastic. Looks like West Tigers are paying some attention.
Still would love to know whether they would have had the same commitment to the clinic if they hadn't had the negative publicity that the SOS Protest Rally has generated for them lately.
Call me an old cynic but I suspect this is a case of, "look at all the good stuff we're doing!"

Took the young bloke out there today and he had a ball.. The players were great, really accomodating and were happy to sign autographs and get photo's taken..

I do agree with B&W though and wonder had it not been for SOS whether this would have gone ahead or not...

From what I've been told by "someone who knows someone, blah, blah, blah" the G6 Development Officer was given the big run around by West Tigers late last year when he was trying to get this organised and he was actually going to approach another close by NRL team for players to come to the Come & Try Day.

RUGBY league was alive in the Highlands this week. The Wests Tigers travelled to the region on Sunday afternoon for training, a coaching clinic and school visits on Monday and Tuesday. After a training session at Mittagong Sports Ground on Monday morning, the squad took hundreds of the Wingecarribee's budding footballers through an afternoon of fun and skills practice that catered for players of all ages and abilities.

The full squad appeared for the Southern Highlands Blitz at Loseby Park at 4pm with only Benji Marshall, Lote Tuqiri and Adam Blair not able to make the trip to the Highlands. The event, organised in cooperation with Group 6 Junior Rugby League, CRL and ARL Development, attracted more than 300 young players and their families who turned up for the chance to throw a ball around with players such as Beau Ryan, Chris Heighington and Matt Utai.

Captain Robbie Farah said the trip had been a good opportunity for the players to bond away from their regular surroundings, especially for the new players on the roster.

"We're still training down here," he said.

"It's a good opportunity to come out and get away from the surrounds of Concord Oval and also do stuff with the community, which is important."

Yesterday afternoon, the players were split into small groups and visited 10 schools in the region to speak with students about junior rugby league and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.

Players visited Hill Top Public School, Colo Vale Public School, St Thomas Aquinas, Bowral Public School, Mittagong Public School, St Michael's, Mittagong, Moss Vale High School, Robertson Public School and Wollondilly Anglican College.

Prop Keith Galloway said the squad often visited a few schools in the lead up to each season, however this was the first time the Tigers had travelled to the Highlands.

"It looks like the kids are having a great time," he said.

Scott Borg (G6 CRL Development Officer) has organised more Rugby League Come & Try Days for the Southern Highlands.

  • Sunday 12th February @ Moss Vale's Community Oval 10.00am - noon.
  • Sunday 19th February @ Mittagong's footy ground 10.00am - noon
  • Sunday 26th Februaury @ Loseby Park, Bowral 10.00am - noon
  • Sunday 4th March @ Robertson Showground 10.00am - noon

Seeing as they finish at lunch time I wouldn't be surprised if the clubs don't pop a few snags on the barbie.
