Appin kids grab glory

APPIN Dogs Junior Rugby League Football Club is a small club with about 100 players. It had four teams reach the finals series in the Group 6 junior competition this season.

The under 16C and the under 11C teams reached their grand finals, which will take place at Thirlmere Sportsground on Saturday.

The under 16s will face Narellan in their grand final at 12.50pm; the under 11C team will take on Bowral in their grand final at 1.15pm.

The under 14B team were knocked out when they lost 30-26 against Camden. The under 10C team were also knocked out when they lost 28-16 against Camden.

The junior club's registrar, Sue Dawson, said she was pleased with the club's achievements.

"At the start of the year we struggled to make a 16s side but they came good and have had a great year," Dawson

said.

"It has been a year of mixed emotions for the club, with Bully our team mascot passing away after one of our home games.

"We also have a sister of one of the under 10s players in a battle with cancer at the moment.

"I am proud to be part of this club and so proud of the children's efforts and the way they represent the Appin community."

Lack of communication from the NRL will hurt grassroots rugby league clubs financially

JUNIOR rugby league clubs have been caught out by the NRL's brand change after spending up to $50,000 each on jerseys for next season without the new logos.

Many clubs order their new stock at the end of September to cash in on an early bird discount rate with merchandise suppliers.

The brand catchcry is "From Coogee to Kangaroos, rugby league teams the nation over will be united by one logo."

De La Salle at Cronulla, Andrew Ettingshausen's old club, has already invested $40,000 on 700 new jerseys without the logo that will be worn by every player in every team at every club across the country.

"The new brand is a great idea - it's a shame they never let the grassroots clubs know about it," said club secretary John Little.

"The big end of town forgot to tell the little end. At De La Salle there is no support from the game's bosses."

NRL marketing manager Paul Kind said the new branding would be phased in over time across rugby league.

"There was never the intention to cost people and clubs at grassroots levels money by forcing change on them," Kind said. "It will take some time for the branding to reach every level of the game. It was never the intention to have it in junior footy in 2013."

De La Salle is one of the biggest in NSW and Little says other clubs order early to get the discounts from suppliers.

"I've already made phone calls to the supplier to see if we can get it changed," he said. "We could be lumbered with the bill to have to put the new logo on the jumpers. And it's money we don't have.

"All the kids will want the new logo - it's just a shame they didn't tell anyone."

Because of the cost of fitting out up to 1000 players, most junior clubs hang on to their jerseys for three to four years.

"There has always been this lack of communication," Little said. "It would be nice for all clubs to be made aware of such a change if they wanted us all to embrace the new glory."

The NRL boasts in its new strategic plan about how 700,000 people will play in competitions within five years.

Another 1.8 million people will be engaged in NRL community programs.

Congratulations to Janette Coleman from Narellan Juniors who was presented with the 2012 Secretary of the Year Award at the Annual Dinner.

This was Janette's first year as Narellan's Secretary and she did an outstanding job in what is arguably one of the most important and demanding jobs on any clubs' committee.

Group 6 Bids Farewell to Peter Mehl & Sophie Vella

Group 6 Junior's Web Site

Posted Image

It's with great sadness that Group 6 says goodbye to President, Peter Mehl and Treasurer, Sophie Vella, after their long, dedicated service to Group 6 Junior Rugby League.

Peter has tried to retire before but was dragged back into an active role a couple of years ago. He has served our Group for many, many years as Secretary and President. He is a Life Member and Patron of Group 6.

Sophie Vella has also decided to step down from her position of Group 6 Junior's Treasurer this year. Sophie has worked behind the scenes for well over 17 years and is also a Life Member.

Both of them will be sorely missed but we wish them well for the future.
