Photo: Jonathan Ng WESTS TIGERS' owners, Wests and Balmain, will hold a critical meeting on Thursday to discuss the future of their joint venture as the disastrous results of the Magpies' NSW Cup team fuel division between the foundation clubs. Record losses by the Magpies in the NSW Cup have angered Wests traditionalists, who claim the Balmain half of the joint venture is favoured because the rejects from Tim Sheens's team are fed to Balmain's NSW Cup side, despite some of them originating from Wests territory at Campbelltown. Last month, Balmain Ryde Eastwood beat Wests 88-16, using players who are proud Magpie juniors. However, Wests Tigers directors will discuss a white paper on Thursday that proposes a single NSW Cup team, named Wests Tigers, which will play six games at Leichhardt and six games at Campbelltown. Advertisement: Story continues below Essentially, the recommendation is that the stand-alone Magpies and Tigers sides will disappear from senior competitions. Furthermore, the management of junior representative teams of both clubs will be outsourced to Wests Tigers. Should Wests and Balmain not agree to a single NSW Cup team, Wests Ashfield, the licensed club which backs the Magpies, would supply the $400,000 needed to support the team. Balmain, with little cash reserves but unity among their directors, rely on Ryde Eastwood to fund their NSW Cup team. The various factions at Wests, with a new football club chairman, Mick Liubinskas, are finally united and anxious to make a strong presence at the meeting. Wests Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said: ''I am confident the paper will be discussed in the right spirit with a positive outcome.'' |

I think the SMH have come up wit the conclusion that the meeting will be an automatic Merger meeting. I am still quietly confident the board are interested in a stand alone team or a better option than a merger. Will see what becomes of the meeting on thursday. It makes alot of sense to me that we keep the Wests Magpies in the seniors at least at Bundy cup level.

Hi Moshmagpie I wish I shared your confidence. As you know 4 of the 7 board members on the Wests Football Club are also on the board of Wests Ashfield. Wests Ashfield prefer a combined Wests Tigers NSW Cup side. /I would say our fate has already been decided. How much more does our club have to be reduced to, seeing it run around in the bundy cup would be a backward step in my opinion. Of course I would be happy to see a side in that competition, but only as an additional team to the NSW Cup side. |

Bundy Cup is a sellout. I try and imagine playing Wentworthville, Windsor and and Mounties as playing Parra, Penrith and Canberra, but it still irks me we are playing against those clubs. To suggest we then take another step down and play against Kingsgrove and Cabramatta-sorry, that I cannot cop. |

I agree with you the_pollie. This of course is nothing against those clubs, but we do belong in a premier competition. |
