Magpies and Balmain bide time about future

NO major decisions were made during a meeting on Thursday evening between Wests Tigers' owners Wests and Balmain, who met at Concord Oval to discuss a "white paper".
Many rugby league fans were worried about the uncertain future of the Magpies competing in the NSW Cup but the Magpies' manager of football operations, Daniel Watson-Hayes, said the meeting was purely an information meeting and that it would be business as usual.

"Basically, at 6pm at Concord Oval, the joint-venture stakeholders met for the first time since 1999, so it was a bit of a historic occasion," he said.

"At this stage it was purely an information meeting with a white paper presented by Wests Tigers.

"We will dissect the proposal at length and draw up a list of the pros and cons, come up with a unified list of recommendations from the Western Suburbs' perspective and from there have our voice heard.

"There's no decision in regards to entering or not entering a Magpies team in the NSW Cup at this stage.

"It's still season 2012, and there is still plenty of rugby league to be played; it would be silly to pre-empt anything."

One of the matters raised in the white paper could help raise rugby league's profile in the area.

"There could be some major benefits for the Campbelltown and Macarthur region with more of a focus on and more money being put into junior development programs with the Magpies," Watson-Hayes said.

"It will ensure we can identify and not lose NRL talent to other NRL clubs."

Watson-Hayes said the Magpies were concerned about local fans' perception and view of Wests Tigers.

'The Western Suburbs Football Club, its members, fans and the community of Campbelltown would like to see a fairer representation of Western Suburbs in the joint venture company it co-owns," he said.

"At present there is quite a concerning perception amongst many Western Suburbs supporters and rugby league fans in general that there is a lack of fair representation and equality when it comes to the brand of the joint venture with many in the rugby league community, that the Wests Tigers is still heavily associated, linked and seen as Balmain, which is only exemplified by the media," Watson-Hayes said.

"Losing the Magpie identity at the NRL level some 13 years ago was a tough and bitter pill to swallow and still hurts.

"So it's important that the 104 years of Western Suburbs heritage is preserved and respected within and through Wests Tigers.

- Magpies' members would be kept well informed and up to date on the issue when more information comes to hand.

As i mentioned on facebook, there is a position going as a poker machine attendant at Wests Ashfield. If we can get a magpies supporter to win the job we can then syphon money out of the club and into the magpies coffers without them knowing. I dont think this is Rick Wayde's proposal though! LOL

We need to trust people like Daniel Watson-Hayes ... I believe he is a true Magpie. But we need to ensure equal representation in the Wests Tigers which the Wests Group have a 1/2 interest ... whether balmain/media like it or not.The Magpie needs to be moved back up the sleeve and to its original size. I also suggest the WESTS Tigers wear the Magpie heritage jersey in all games at Campbelltown (balmain jersey at leichhardt). We are entitled to our rightful Magpie recognition in the JOINT venture before we delve further into this white paper and how it affects the Magpie future. I would like to know why the balmain hall of fame is included with the WESTS Tiger gala dinner and why the Wests Magpies are not included ? Is this another swipe at the Magpies ? It's just disgusting that the guys from the WESTS group just sit back .... so sad !!!!!

Yes it is TC!

You only have to look at the number of former magpies doing the hard yards for the Wests Tigers, like John Skandalis, Andrew Leeds, Steve Georgalis and Leo, yet the Balmain boys are only interested in getting air time in the media! Is it because they are also representative players that they demand greater respect than our wests magpie boys? It makes me sick!
