The Illawarra Cutters backed up from their demolition of Balmain-Ryde Eastwood to dispatch the Western Suburbs Magpies 56-4 last Saturday. After a promising second half performance last week in Auckland, the Magpies were intent on building on the positives in Wollongong, but that came unstuck on just the second tackle of the match, with a dropped ball providing Illawarra with an outstanding opportunity to open the scoring. The Cutters duly obliged, with a crossfield bomb finding Jason Raper, who outleapt Michael La Manna to touch down on the left flank to open the scoring at 4-0. Henry Raiwalui was unsuccessful with his conversion attempt. Illawarra’s opening try spurred the Magpies into action, who had three consecutive sets on the Illawarra line before some high quality scrambling defence prevented Tuki Jackson crossing on the right wing. Illawarra posted their second try on 12 minutes, after back to back penalties for Western Suburbs markers not standing square. A switch in play saw Leeson Ah Mau sneak in behind the play-the-ball to wrestle his way over the line. Henry Raiwalui shanked the conversion attempt across the face to leave Illawarra up 8-0. Illawarra applied immense pressure to the Magpies line before Wests responded with another spell of consecutive sets, which resulted in a try against the run of play to the Cutters on 25 minutes. A backline swing to the left saw Nigel Millgate fire a bullet pass to Tuki Jackson, but the ball never made it to Jackson, with Cutters five-eighth Jared Allen picking off Millgate’s pass to race 60 metres to touch down close to the posts. A change of kicker to Damien Cook saw a change of fortunes, with the conversion successful to move Illawarra out to 14-0. The Cutters applied great pressure to the Magpies attack on 28 minutes, forcing a panicked last tackle pass to Wests custodian Zoram Watene, who managed to get a grubber kick in, which he successfully regathered, before a desperate kick wide, which found a barnstorming Tuki Jackson, who barrelled his way over in the corner despite close attention by the cutters cover defence. Nigel Millgate was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt, the Cutters up 14-4. Illawarra added to their tally five minutes before the break after a controversial decision by referee Luke Phillips to allow the Cutters to continue on after clearly knocking on from a one on one steal from Dean Parata. After a penalty for dissent, which was advanced, a backline move on the right wing saw Henry Raiwalui come around under the posts, with Damien Cook converting for a 20-4 scoreline. As halftime approached, former Bulldog Jarrad Hickey, running the fringe of the ruck, popped a delightful inside pass thrity metres out from the Magpie line for Michael Lett following through, to touch down. Damien Cook again added the extras to leave Illawarra up 26-4 at the break. The Cutters emerged from the half time break invigorated, and ran in two quick tries through feeble defence, the first to Jared Allen, the second to Michael Lett, with Damien Cook converting both to blow the score out to 38-4 after 45 minutes. A sliced kick which sailed out on the full from Magpie Zach Campbell allowed Illawarra to commence their set 30 metres from the Magpies line, with Jared Allen producing a Fittler-esque right foot step to beat Tom Morrison to register his third try of the afternoon. Damien Cook popped the conversion for a 44-4 lead to Illawarra after 53 minutes. Western Suburbs muscled up after that, with strong attacking efforts almost paying dividends on 63 minutes, with a strong charge by Henry Iuta resulting in the Magpies crossing the line but unable to ground the ball. Illawarra made Wests pay for not converting the chances on 67 minutes, with prop Jack Stockwell taking the hand off to score untouched under the woodwork. Damien Cook added to his afternoon day out, with Illawarra hitting the half century. Illawarra finished off the scoring with ten minutes to play, as Josh Miller showed impressive strength to carry three Magpies over after a right hand raid. Damien Cook added the extras for a score to 56-4. The final ten minutes saw a multitude of handling errors from both sides, as the Magpies looked to register double figures, while Illawarra searched for 60. For Illawarra, Jarrad Hickey and Jack Stockwell were towers of strength, while Damien Cook’s goalkicking was complemented by a strong running performance out of dummy half. For Wests, Henry Iuta and Zach Campbell led the way with ball in hand, while Jay Maseuli and Tom Morrison were everywhere in defence. With the NSW Residents team picked this week, the NSW Cup takes a break next week, with the Magpies then enjoying the bye the week after, leaving Wests on break until their 14 July visit to Henson Park to take on Newtown. Im no footballer, but what happened to tackling around the legs? So many attempted tackles were pushed away because they were trying to tackle ball and all, atleast if you tackle around the legs, the second tackler can wrap the ball up. But hey, what would I know! |
