I love hearing how Balmain people claim they saved Wests in 1999. They could have gone alone as they were the stronger club. Well what was that based on...

The ground? Leichhardt Oval was substandard to Campbelltown Stadium
The Leagues Clubs.. well we know how that went
what about on field performances...

Balmain vs Wests Position on the table

1990 - 5th (semi finalist) vs 13th = Balmain
1991- 12th vs 6th (semi finalists after playoff + magpies club Championship) = Magpies
1992 - 10th vs 5th = Magpies
1993 - 14th vs 13th = Magpies
1994 - 16th (Wooden Spoon) vs 13th = Magpies
1995 - 15th vs 13th = Magpies
1996 - 12th vs 8th (Semi finalist) = Magpies
1997 - 8th vs 9th (both teams equal on points, for and against the difference) = Balmain
1998 - 13th vs 20th (Wooden Spoon) = Balmain
1999 - 15th vs 17th (Wooden Spoon) = Balmain

So in the 90's Magpies beat Balmain 6 to 4 on the table.

Had Balmain gone on their own, they would in fact have survived as they were ahead of Souths, Norths and Wests according to the criteria for inclusion in the NRL from 2000 onwards. But by the formation of a joint venture between Balmain and Wests, thus guaranteeing the survival of the two clubs, albeit in a joint venture situation, meant Souths and Norths were then expelled.

So having the largest junior nursery in the world meant didily squat in the criteria then? What a joke!

Juniors were part of the criteria, along with average home crowds, financial structure, business plan, etc

The juniors must have not been high on the criteria then!

Yes, I saw that too, seemed like anything that was in favour of the magpies surviving was not included.

I dont like conspiracy theories, but I feel this criteria was created to eliminate the magpies so that the macarthur nursery would be able to supply the NRL with an abundance of players for all Sydney Clubs, not just Wests. It irks me when Phil Gould rants and raves about rugby league in the west needing to stand up! Was he screaming out when the magpies were forced out of the competition? I really does make me angry!
