Our boys played pretty well yesterday. Picton came out with a plan to get off the line quick and to be tough in defence. Their first 20 minutes was excellent, but 3 tries to Kyle Weh and 2 to Brad Cameron really closed the door on them. 33-6 was a pretty deserving scoreline for our boys, however Picton were extremely tough.

Lions take top spot By Lauren Wright http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1575855/lions-take-top-spot/?cs=264 ![]() IT was tough and it was physical but with nothing left in the tank by the end of the match except for club passion, Mittagong Lions savoured a 34-28 win over Narellan Jets at home yesterday afternoon. Always an exciting match between the first grade teams, yesterday's game did not disappoint. With first place up for grabs on the competition ladder, the Lions made sure they didn't miss out on the opportunity. Down 12-0 after the first 15 minutes, a vocal home crowd lifted Mittagong and they hit back through skipper Scott Borg who scored the first two tries. Locked at 24-24 midway through the second half it was anyone's match and when Narellan scored another try to take the lead 28-24, Mittagong players and supporters rose to the occasion. Former Narellan player Ben Baker got the Lions ahead by two when he scored late in the match before Steve McNaught scored the Lions' final try to seal the win. Warwick Carter was the other Lions player to score a try. And the match was not without some scuffles. Ben Baker and Narellan's Shannon Gallant were both sin binned early in the second half where the passion almost turned into a sideline brawl as Baker struggled to control his anger. Robbie Payne was also sent to the bin later in the half after he had words with the referee. But despite the drama, the Lions came out on top and took first place on the ladder. "We targeted this game as a game we needed to win. They touched us up in the first game at Narellan and we thought we could beat them here," Borg said. "Narellan's the biggest team in the comp and they're probably the most physical as well. Usually they get on the bad end of the penalty count but I think we were 6-0 down after the first 15 minutes and it showed on the scoreboard." Borg said the team wanted to be disciplined in the match and have a high completion rate. Failing to achieve both these goals, Borg said it was a great achievement to come away with the win and was pleased with the passion the team displayed. "That's what we're trying to get in the club, a bit of passion. We talk about being best mates but you're only best mates when you win so we want to make sure we can keep winning and our goal's obviously to win the comp." Borg said Matt Thorpe did well up the middle but the team as a whole were standouts in yesterday's close victory. This weekend they will face Campbelltown City Kangaroos at Claymore who have been on a roll, with Mittagong the last team to beat them in the first round. "We'll have to be switched on to win it. We can't go from a game like this to losing a game like that so we'll be ready for it." Ryan Borg came off late in the game with an ankle injury and may be in doubt for this weekend's match. Borg said they also had Saxon Sell, Aaron Connell and Rhyce McLaren still to return as well. "Once we get all the boys back on deck people are going to be fighting for their position which is going to be good for the club." |

This person isn't, one guess where he's from, I deleted the original comment as it was a blatant attempt to cause trouble, he made some comment last month about being @ Mitta training on a day it was called off. |

Your boys definitely played pretty well TC. I really think they are the benchmark. Just the complete unit. How good are you going when you're bringing Dave Lowe and Bart Masters off the bench?! As for our guys, I was just hoping they'd be able to put up some resistance. With Chris Young, Bowers, Kiel Shephard, Nick Taylor and Blake Matthews missing I'm happy with the effort that was on display. Alex Peters was outstanding for us, especially after backing up from the group game. For Oakdale, Kyle Weh was tremendous and Hopkins really impressed me. I knew he could play, but he was awesome. |

Campbelltown City Kangaroos in tight race to rugby league finals By Sean Cunningham http://www.macarthuradvertiser.com.au/story/1581259/campbelltown-city-kangaroos-in-tight-race-to-rugby-league-finals/?cs=1563 IT'S just past the halfway stage of the Group 6 first grade rugby league season and many teams remain in contention to challenge for a play-off place. Only Moss Vale who foot the table could be ruled out of reaching the finals. Three teams seem to share favouritism as the teams to beat this season — Oakdale, Narellan and Mittagong. Campbelltown City Kangaroos are also in a prime position to reach the finals. Their coach Drew Dalton said injuries have taken their toll on the team this season but he hoped to field his strongest team when the finals come around. "Basically, we are happy with the position we have put ourselves in going into the second half of the year," Dalton said. "However, we are by no means content with what we have done either. "We have plenty of room for improvement if we are going to threaten in the finals. "I would like to think we will be in the grand final as that is what we train for, but if I was to say who I thought the strongest threat to the title is, I would say Mittagong then Oakdale." Narellan coach Daryn Fallshaw believes Oakdale and Mittagong will be the teams to beat but has faith in his bunch of players as well. "I think the two standouts so far are the Mittagong and Oakdale sides who are very consistent," Fallshaw said. "We expect to improve in the second half of the season as we have a lot of new players and are finally starting to gel as a team. "I think this season has been one of the most even competitions in recent memory. "I think any one of about seven teams can beat anyone on there day." Fallshaw tipped Picton to be the dark horses, who could figure prominently in the finals, if they get their full side on the field. League heavyweights Oakdale, with Brendon Reeves back as coach this season, are sure to figure in the finals. Reeves' team is sitting at the top of the ladder but he realises there is still much work to be done to ensure a play-off spot. "We're building nicely into the season, but there's still a long way to go," Reeves said. "We have a lot of away games [to come] so we will be fully tested in ensuing matches. "Narellan and Mittagong look good and Camden and Picton may come home with a wet sail I believe." RESULTS:First grade Campbelltown City Kangaroos 30 Moss Vale 20, Camden 48 The Oaks 24, Mittagong 34 Narellan 28, Oakdale 33 Picton 6. Thirlmere/Tahmoor bye. Reserves: Campbelltown City Kangaroos 22 Moss Vale 0, Camden 60 The Oaks 16, Mittagong 46 Narellan 24, Picton 20 Oakdale 20. Under 18-1: Moss Vale 9 Campbelltown City Kangaroos 8, Camden 42 Narellan 18.Under 18-2: Mittagong Green 36 Picton 16. Second division: Bundanoon 32 Appin White 20, Jamberoo 16 Appin Blue 10, Warragamba 24 Bargo Bunnies 8. COMING UP: Sunday's games at 2.30pm: Camden v Picton at Kirkham Park, Elderslie; Narellan v The Oaks at Narellan Sportsground; Campbelltown City Kangaroos v Mittagong at Fullwood Reserve, Claymore and Thirlmere/Tahmoor v Moss Vale at Thirlmere Sportsground. ![]() http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1580280/bundanoon-beat-new-appin-side/?cs=264 BUNDANOON notched up another win with a 32-20 victory over Appin White on Sunday. This was an unknown quantity for Bundanoon who were up against the new Appin side. With only a two point lead at halftime, Bundanoon fired up for the second half to finish the match with a comfortable win from what was not their best performance of the season. "The first 20 minutes of the second half we took our foot off the pedal and ball handling errors crept in," coach Brett Breeze said. Breeze said it was a pleasing result given the fact they hadn't played a game in three weeks. Tim Martin scored two tries while Ben Palk, Kyal Martin, Geoff McKeown and Pete Randazzo also crossed the line. "Our attack has improved a lot and that's something we've been spending a fair bit of time on. Our defence is probably the strongest part of our game so far this season. All our backs scored tries on Sunday and we're starting to get the ball out wide and the backs are having a pleasing impact." With a few injuries at the start of the season, Breeze said they were almost back to full strength and McKeown who has only played a handful of games this season was a standout on Sunday. "He's come along in leaps and bounds and Tim Martin at five-eighth is starting to feel comfortable in the position." They will face Appin Blue at home on Sunday and Breeze said he was fairly confident they could come away with a win. "We've got a good following of supporters and the boys should start to produce set moves we've been working on." |

Dragons fall just short of first win for the season By Lauren Wright http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1580281/dragons-fall-just-short-of-first-win-for-the-season/?cs=264 AT halftime many thought it would be Moss Vale's first first-grade win of the season. Yet it was not to be. At the break the Dragons were ahead 16-14 and even held a 20-10 lead against Campbelltown City Kangaroos in the second half before penalties allowed the Roos back in the match. The score at full time was 30-20. Chris Enahoro did his best to inspire the side scoring three tries in the first half and coach Andrew Bowie said he had "an absolute blinder", playing for the full 80 minutes in the second row. "He was probably the best player on the ground and was unstoppable there for a bit." It was the final 15 minutes that cost the Dragons their first win of the year after they gave away a number of penalties which allowed Campbelltown to score three quick tries to win the match. "The effort was there again and it shows the guys if we keep trying a result is not too far away," Bowie said. Two of the Dragons key playmakers halfback Ryan Cullen and centre Josh Champion were both unavailable for the match and Bowie said their return would lift the team. Bowie said Damian Barton played well off the bench and Scott Geddes also had a good game at lock running the ball into space. "We'll take a lot of encouragement out of that." They will face Thirlmere this weekend and Bowie said the team was keen to get stuck into them. Moss Vale were 18-0 at one stage on Sunday and Bowie said the key for them would be to hang onto the ball and move it round. "We certainly had the better of them for the first 50 minutes. A similar effort against Thirlmere might get us home." Moss Vale reserve Dragons fared not better after they went down 22-0 against Campbelltown. |
