Lions take top spot By Lauren Wright http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1621706/lions-take-top-spot/?cs=264 FAR from full strength, Mittagong proved just how strong premiership contenders they are with a 34-24 win over Oakdale at home yesterday. The win puts them on top of the first grade ladder against a team who many have tipped as competition favourites this year. Mittagong raced out to a 24-0 lead before Oakdale hit back to score two tries before halftime. They went to the break 28-12 up but suffered a scare as Oakdale held onto the ball and got some momentum early in the second half. But the Lions held on with first spot at stake and enjoyed the 10 point win. "It's a great win. We had seven regulars out so I was a bit worried coming into the game," first grade coach Scott Borg said. "But depth wins comps and we've got plenty of depth at the moment. We're bringing players in and they're doing the job for us. They end up being our standouts on the day which is awesome." While he was happy with the win, Borg said they still needed to improve closing out matches. "We've just got to stop their momentum I think. Sometimes we're better playing from behind because we actually put in a good effort. As soon as we get in front we start to let them back in. We're too nice a team." "We always say we're a good team and we still couldn't put them away after being up 24-0 at one stage. That's disappointing but being at the top of the table is a pretty good effort." The cold weather and home crowd worked in Mittagong's favour as the crowd cheered them home. "It's always hard for them to come down to Mittagong. I don't think they were too impressed to come down here to the cold. I think we shocked them with the way we played straight away." Borg said they missed Robbie Payne who was out on representative duties and arguably one of the best front rowers in Group 6 but Erin Blackshaw and Troy Martin played well. "They were outstanding. We missed Payne's go forward (but) they know when they have to lift without probably the dominant front rower in the comp." This Sunday they will travel to Thirlmere to face the Roosters who knocked them out of the competition last year and Borg said they would be out for revenge. "We haven't played Thirlmere this year so we don't know what to expect. They're a bit hot and cold this year and they've got one of the standout players in Stuart Flanagan playing for then so if he plays we've got to be on our game." Borg said their goal was not to lose a match for the rest of the season. Payne should return next week, however Justin Madden will still be overseas and Ben Baker still has three weeks left on his suspension he received after the match against Narellen. "We'll get them back eventually but they're going to have to push their way back into the side because the way our boys are going, we're looking good. Josh Bergeman, he's killing it." The reserve grade Lions also sit at the top of the table after a win over Oakdale yesterday. |

CCKRLFC are flying under the radar. Thirlmere may not be a consistent outfit this year but the Roos to win this game without Drew is a positive sign. A few additions and some to come will continue to build confidence and add some pressure on the so called big 3. This club is coming along in leaps and bounds and all involved should hold their heads high. |

If they can knock off oakdale next week that will definatly put them on radar. I don't think that they have even come close to the "big three" and were pushed by mossy!! |

I don't suppose anyone knows the date of the grand final? I don't remember it being announced. I assume it's September 15 ( 4 weeks after the last round). Anyone know any thing for sure? |

Got to agree with Brutus. We are yet to play for 80 minutes in any game. We have shown glimpses and got deep into cycles with quality opposition like Narellan, Workies and Mitta, but we've been rolled fairly easily in the end by these three teams, so there is still a significant gulf to make up. The addition of experienced quality players like Justin Miller and Manu Aso'ava will undoubtedly help, but whether it is enough, time will tell. Picton are the real dark horse of the comp. Michael Lett would be the best outside back in all of the CRL, and can turn a game on its head- he won the 2011 NSW Cup GF for the Bulldogs with a ball strip with 30 seconds to go- a play only Letty could have made. Thanks for the praise Normy. We are quietly building a football club that represents and honours the past of the club. There's a really good facebook page gone up in recent times called 'Macarthur Suburbs - Photographs into the Past'. I think the greater Campbelltown area was a much better place when there were four strong senior community football clubs... young blokes being mentored and role modelled about footy and life by the older blokes- decent hard working family men who showed them the way. That's what we've tried to instill at the Roos above all else- a sense of mateship & community that they can all one day return to. The reunions of our senior club era players 1955-1983 are always packed out. We missed a whole generation of players being added to this. Where is the GF scheduled for this season? |

Thanks TC, things are starting to come together. We're starting to get some quality ball to Letty and Nick Taylor out wide. But I think most importantly we've had some more depth in the forwards the last few weeks. We were getting around with only one genuine front rower for a few weeks. Hopefully Chris Young is back on deck soon, in my very biased opinion there's no better forward getting around. Luckily though we've had the depth to cover his loss recently. What happened at Mittagong on Sunday? Looks like the lions got off to a great start. |

Mittagong were really good, they came out switched on and we couldn't handle it. They can score a long range try. Everytime we had the ball down their end though, we always looked like scoring. They are a good side. |

http://www.wollondillyadvertiser.com.au/story/1640945/bunnies-ready-to-hop/?cs=1300![]() For a good cause: Danielle Morrissey (from left), Hayley Lutman, Katie Roberts and Megan Murphy are gearing up for a 100-kilometre trek to raise money for Oxfam. Picture: Jeff de Pasquale THESE Bargo Bunnies will help Oxfam hop 100 kilometres closer to reducing poverty and injustice around the world next month. The four women, Danielle Morrissey, 25, Hayley Lutman, 24, Katie Roberts, 25, and Megan Murphy, 25, have entered a team into this year's Oxfam 100 kilometre trailwalk. They have dubbed themselves the Bargo Bunnies because three of their partners play in the local rugby league team. "Our target was to raise $3000 originally but anything over $3000 we're happy with," Ms Morrissey said. The Oxfam Trailwalk fund-raiser has raised more than $49 million in Australia since 1999. In August the quartet will attempt the 48-hour challenge in a bid to make their contribution to the Oxfam coffers. At first, the women were hesitant about taking on the challenge, which takes place in remote and hilly terrain. But they have put their fears behind them. "Now we know what we're in for, we thought it would be a fantastic cause," Ms Morrissey said. The track starts in the Hawkesbury and works across to the east coast, finishing in Mosman. There are seven checkpoints for teams to stop, recuperate and be spurred on by friends and volunteers. The Bargo Bunnies will be calling it a night at the 60-kilometre mark at St Ives Showground after day one — where Ms Morrissey's fiance will be waiting with a pitched tent. They'll then attempt the final 40 kilometres on day two. The girls have been training for more than six months and have completed two practice walks of the course. "We did a lot of hikes out here [in Wollondilly], that's when we thought we better get out there to the track [in the Hawkesbury]," she said. "We got a big shock. "The first 50 kilometres is like rock climbing through bush." The bunnies will have supporters waiting at five of the seven check- points to spur them on. To sponsor the Bargo Bunnies visit trailwalker.oxfam.org.au/sydney and search for their team. |

Spuds give Bundy a touch up By Lauren Wright http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1641124/spuds-give-bundy-a-touch-up/?cs=264 FOR the first 20 minutes, it seemed as though the match could be a close one. But in typical Robertson style, the Spuds picked up the pace and were too good for Bundanoon in their 56-12 victory at Robertson Showground on Sunday afternoon. Bundanoon scored two early tries through Dane Trompert and Tim Martin to stay in touch with the Spuds but once Robertson got going they couldn't keep up. While Spuds skipper Doug Tilly knew at the end of the match they had won comfortable, he seemed almost surprised by the enormity of the scoreline. "I thought it was a lot closer in that first 10 minutes. They really came out and had a go," he said Without regular five-eighth Aaron de Jager, young Jayden Valenszini stepped up to the role. "We seemed to work well. We kind of didn't have a pivot and were running with three centres at one stage but I thought Royce (Harris) controlled the game really well at half." "Jags (de Jager) was a big loss for us, just controlling the game and his kicking game but to see a young fella (Valenszini) stand up and have a go, it was really good to see." While Bundanoon proved they have the potential to compete with Robertson, Tilly said their fitness again proved too much for the opposition. They looked good in patches but we were just too fit for them on the day. That was our biggest thing, we can just keep going. If we stuff up we know everyone's there to make those tackles." Tilly said Valenszini played well in his role of ball runner, with Paddy Cann and Harris also stepping up. "Royce (Harris) I thought controlled the game. He was there in the middle and he was our only pivot." Mitchell Eccleston also put in a stellar performance, his offloads allowing Robertson to take advantage of second phase play. Bundanoon coach Brett Breeze said their failure to shut down Eccleston and Valenszini played a big part in the loss. "We just didn't contain those two guys and they ran rings around us. Mitch Eccleston's a very good player with an incredible ability to get the ball away in tackles and their second phase play was too strong for us," he said. Breeze said any team who could beat them this season would have to play extremely well. "I've always said we're in with a chance. When we play again we need to shut down Eccleston's ball play, that's the key." Bundanoon were also unlucky to lose Robbie Purcell in the second half with a hand injury. Steve Hickey was also out and Breeze said it was a big loss for their front row. "Overall the guys never stopped trying. The application was there, we just weren't good enough on the day. Geoff McKeown played his first game at halfback and Breeze said he did well. "He played really well and has some potential in that position. Breeze said in the forwards, Mick Hewson, Peter Buchan, Paul Quigg and Dan Hewson were the standout performers. "We just need to keep plugging away with out work in attack. Our defence has been the best part of our game for most of the season, except Sunday. We looked better with the ball in hand." "Defence is the key, you can wear sides down in defence and with a good kicking game hopefully everything else will fall into place." With only a few games left before the finals, Breeze said they could not afford to lose many more matches or they could possibly miss out on the semis. |

Lions roast Roosters By Lauren Wright http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1641123/lions-roast-roosters/?cs=264 MITTAGONG first grade remain at the top of the competition ladder after a convincing 54-4 win over Thirlmere-Tahmoor Roosters on Sunday afternoon. The Lions were out for revenge after the Roosters knocked them out of the finals series last year and they certainly got that. Steve McNaught crossed for two tries while coach Scott Borg along with Ryan Borg, Ryan Turner, Matt Turland, Erin Blackshaw, Warwick Carter, Josh Bergamin and Ash Brown all scored a try each. Borg said Thirlmere were far from their best but was impressed with his own side's defence. "Our goal was to try and keep them to zero and we let in a soft try but our defence was really good. We all turned up in defence," he said. The Lions scored most of their points in the first half and led 34-4 at the break but still pressed their advantage in the second 40 minutes to put on 20 more points. It was a match that Thirlmere needed to win to stay in touch with the top teams heading into the back end of the season and Borg said he had expected a much tougher match. "I think it was just our intensity, we came out with a lot of intensity. We dropped a lot of ball but when we made a break we were scoring tries. With a few of the regular first grade players a bit dusty after a big night on Saturday, Borg said the four under-18 players who backed up, Jack Payne, Dylan Russell, Bergamin and Turner, all played well. Borg said Brown also played well. They will face Camden this weekend who currently sit in fifth spot on the ladder. Borg said he expected them to be much better than when they faced them in the first round of the competition. "It'll be even tougher playing at Camden so we need to turn up to get the points." He said their forward pack would be crucial to getting a win and had played well all season to set a platform for the backs. "If they go good, we go good." Edited by disco stu, Jul 17 2013, 02:02 PM.
