I find this very hard to write and especially on the forum but my concerns are far too great, I have supported and loved Group 6 for many years, and what I have heard and seen really has me worried for a couple of clubs and the Group in general, my concerns has seen me with nowhere else to turn and airing my grievances on this forum.

Its all to do with money, I am friendly with a member of Group 6 Management and I have been told that the Group is struggling with finances, struggling with the paid admin job, this job has run its coarse to the point that there is no money to keep it going, the final series will see $15 entry fees with the Grand Final at $20 just to recuperate some desperately needed funds, winners will not be getting good prize winnings unless crowds can double from previous seasons.

The running of the comp has had many faults to the point clubs just don't have faith in the management, it seems very unfair that a number of clubs have been given deals not to the rules, and my greatest fear of clubs struggling to pay there bills, the paid secretary role has put further pressure on clubs.

Good luck to all teams in the semi finals and I hope the group can finish strong, my tip will be Picton in 1st Grade and Oakdale Reserve Grade, Mittagong under 18's and Appin in under 18 Div 2, Warragamba in the 2nd Division.
Is it really $15 this weekend?
$20 at the GF is too steep.
That's excessive and will draw crowds away not through the gate, Group 6 seems to be struggling commercially why is this?
All businesses are struggling everywhere and the fact is that G6 is a business. A business to be successful needs support and IMO what they did to Eagles this year has divided opinions of their faithful supporters. I see no good PR coming from Group 6 and any questions asked about the events of this year by the media are not answered. The fact that all charges put on Daniel Draper by G6 were dismissed when an independent hearing heard them must send alarm bells ringing.
I am not trying to start all again but what happened this year hurt G6 not made it stronger. If G6 do not have a change in their thinking and strategies I think they may one day pay the price and it may be sooner rather than later. There is a book written for business called I think "The mice and the cheese" and if anybody can get hold of a copy and read it you may get what am saying. It basically says that if you try to hold on to what you have now and do not hunt for more cheese, you will run out and starve. You will see for yourself what crowds you get if these prices are charged for gate admission. (and by that time its too late)
I support Rugby League anywhere I can, and would hate to see such a fine competition crumble in the near future.

Every now and again Group 6 gets the wobbles and people get worried that it will slowly die but in reality it has been constant since year dot.

Sure clubs come and go but the core nucleus is still there, not unlike other competitions that have faltered and had to merge or combine with other districts to survive. Both Canterbury and St George districts had strong A Grade competitions when I was growing up but these days only a few clubs have representation, hence the combined Sydney competition being formed. Wests is another example and there are many reasons why blokes dont play footy once they turn 18 or 20 years of age. Other districts have been able to continue on their own without that need - Manly, Parramatta, Penrith etc. but lets remember as well that Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield have taken park players away from those local comps.

This years competition has been strong with a high number of NRL/NYC expereinced players running around. Illawarra have Leagues Clubs supporting their clubs so can offer higher sign ons and can get first crack at quality players but our competition does compare favourably and compete with other CRL Groups as evidenced by our strong showing in the country championships.

The Group and clubs need to be pro-active in recruitment and sponsorships to continue to survive, which involves engaging the younger generation with fresh ideas such as social media, memberships and compensation for efforts and injuries.

Bring back the parachutists on GF and the crowds will flock to watch I say  That and being allowed to bring your truck or ute and back it up to the fence with the obligatory thrown out lounge suit and that is what country RL is about :winner:

I've heard that the attendance at the Senior's finals games this year is up on last year. Should be another big weekend.
Mitta will be busy with Group 6 junior's playing their finals on Saturday & Sunday and the seniors playing on Saturday night.

Spuds suffer first loss of the season

http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1749047/spuds-suffer-first-loss-for-2013/?cs=264

THE home crowd at Robertson were left stunned when the final whistle went as the Spuds suffered their first defeat of the season 24-18.

Robertson got off to a slow start against Warragamba who scored in the first few minutes of the match.

The Spuds were given a helping hand when a Warragamba player was sin binned soon after.

Jayden Valenszini scored two tries while Robertson had the advantage and Matt Hammond also crossed the line.

The Spuds went to the break 18-6 up but a fired up Warragamba side came out determined to peg back the gap in the second half.

Warragamba put on three unanswered tries in the second half for which Robertson had no answer.

They came close a couple of times but were a far cry from the team who dominated in the first half.

Spuds captain Doug Tilly said they got complacent and made too many errors.

"We thought we did enough in the first half to win. It was poor defence really. All credit to them, they played well but we made them look better," he said.

"We just didn't come out in the second half. We've been known to do that but they caught us out."

In their round 13 clash against Warragamba, with the same side Robertson got up 34-22.

"It was just that they capitalised on our mistakes which we seemed to make a lot of. We honestly just made them look good.

"They moved the ball around and in the end they were making yards whenever they wanted. For every one good thing we did, we did two bad things."

Tilly said they also lacked focus out on the field and while there were good individual performances at times, they failed to perform well as a team for the whole 70 minutes.

"We trained really well on Tuesday night but I don't think we've been as focused as what we can be, so hopefully that pulls everyone into line. Everyone's been putting in, it just feels sometimes the focus isn't all there."

"At one point or another everyone played really well but then someone would do something good and then the next go they'd throw a miracle pass or just drop it cold or miss a tackle."

The Spuds lost Jesse Mauger for most of the match after he was left concussed from a tackle early in the match.

Tilly said he was fine and should be right to play this weekend.

It was a disappointing loss for Robertson who will have another chance this weekend against Bundanoon, but Tilly said there were still some standout players.

"I thought Pat Pearse came on and had a really good go off the bench. Our two front rowers Clarke Walker and Matt Rolles again seemed to make yards which was good. Jayden Valenszini out wide went really well again I thought and Aaron Ditton.
Tilly said they would need to knuckle down at training this week and prepare for a tough match against Bundanoon.

"We know that Bundy can turn it on on their day and they really pushed us when we played them at home last time. So no matter what we need fitness, that's the biggest thing."

"Bundy'll give us a good hard game and hopefully we get on top of them.

Bundanoon snatch victory from Bunnies

By Lauren Wright
http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1749048/bundanoon-snatch-victory-from-bunnies/?cs=264
Posted Image

BUNDANOON coach Brett Breeze had more than just a few nervous moments on the sideline of Sunday's match against Bargo.

Up 16-4 at the break, Ben Palk crossed the line for Bundanoon in the second half to extend their lead.

But soon after it all fell apart for Bundanoon as Bargo stormed back into the match.

It was not until Pete Ranzdazzo scored in the corner in the final minutes of the match that Bundanoon managed to regain the lead and snatch a 26-22 win.

Daniel Hewson, Justin Day and Tim Martin also scored tries for Bundanoon on Sunday.

"It's been like that all season. We've had a few close games where it's gone right down to the wire but obviously I'm really wrapped with the result," Breeze said.

"We're just going to have to work a lot more on our defence because it slipped a little bit in the second half and we let them back in the game."

Breeze said he was disappointed with the defence in the second half but pleased the team continued to fight.

"We lost that intensity in defence and put ourselves in a dangerous position to lose the game. But once again the boys held in there and fought to the end and scored the last try so that was a pleasing thing."

After Tim Martin left the field with an ankle injury, Breeze said halfback Geoff McKeown stepped up.

"I thought Geoff McKeown at halfback went well. A lot of responsibility went onto his shoulders after we lost Tim Martin. So he went well with the extra responsibility."

"With the additional confidence that he's got, he's become a really good halfback and he's only a young fella so it looks good for the future of Bundy with a few of the younger players we've got."

Breeze said Paul Quigg was again strong in the forwards, making a number of metres.

In their second year in the Group 6 division two competition Bundanoon have gone one step further in the semi-finals.

Last year they were knocked out in the first round and Breeze said it was a good achievement for the club.

"That's all you can ask. You want to improve every year and we have this year so it's great. But I think if we play to the best of our ability we can go one step further and nothing would be better than playing in the grand final second year in the competition."

Bundanoon will face Robertson in an all Highlands clash this weekend to determine who will face Warragamba the week after.

They will be without Peter Buchan (broken hand) and Steve Hickey (torn shoulder ligaments) with the extent of Martin's injury not yet known.

Breeze said they would need to lift their intensity in defence and hoped the forwards would share more of the workload.

"We're sort of leaving the responsibility to Paul Quigg at times and I think we need to share that workload around the forwards. If we can do that it'll just make everyone's job easy."

Lions Into Grand Final

Posted Image

http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1745046/lions-into-grand-final/?cs=264

IT was Mittagong's most exciting and gut wrenching match of the season all in one.

First grade faced Narellan at Mittagong on Saturday night with the match decided in extra time.

The Lions got off to a slow start and trailed 12-0 before they hit back.

It was a game of tit-for-tat in the second half as both teams fought to go straight through to the grand final.

But in the second period of extra time Sebastian Sell crashed over the line to put Mittagong through.

Many of the home crowd supporters were hoarse at the end of the match after cheering their team home right up to the final whistle.

First grade coach Scott Borg said it was an incredible performance from his side but still not their best.

"That's a grand final virtually, that's a massive game," he said.

It was a typically physical game against Narellan who came out determined to push Mittagong all the way.

"We knew they'd come out and bash us but I still felt like we could have been on top as well. They were 12-0 up but I feel like we blew a few tries at the start of the game.

"We keep having to drag ourselves out of holes which is going to kill us one day but we keep finding ways to win so I'll take that."

Borg praised Sell who has been in and out of the side with injuries this year.

"He doesn't get many so good on him. He probably had the best game he's had all year."

In one of their few night matches this year, in conditions which don't suit their style of play, Borg said it was good to get over the line against a quality team.

"Narellan were supposed to be red hot coming into it and we've knocked them over. Picton were red hot and we beat them as well so we think we can beat everyone but we're not too confident."

With the crowd rallying behind their club at the death, Borg said they played a big part in the win.

"The crowd was crazy but it doesn't mean anything if we don't do it again in two weeks. This is what it's about, the atmosphere. They complain we brought all three Mittagong games to Mittagong but you wouldn't have had a crowd like this anywhere else."

When the final whistle went and the scores were locked at 22-22, Borg said they knew they needed to play smarter to win the match.

"We just played a bit dumb. We were trying to kick field goals when we're the best try scoring team in the comp. But a few people made errors that we don't usually make and the night time doesn't really suit us to be honest.

"We like to play a bit fast where Narellan like to bash us so it suited them to a tee."

With the club struggling just a few years ago, Borg said it had been an amazing year for the Lions but there was still a long way to go.

"That was our goal at the start of the year (to have) three teams in the grand final. So reserves still have to win and 18s still have to win next week but I think they can get the job done for us."

Borg praised the efforts of Matt Thorpe who was again impressive in defence and Warwick Carter.

"Matt Thorpe, I don't know why he's not playing NRL. He's a standout tackling guys twice his size and drive them back 10 metres. He's outstanding and Warwick Carter's fantastic."

Borg said they would now have a break from football before training hard and preparing for the grand final.

"I think every team you play is going to possible beat us on the day and we've got to be at our best to beat them. Whoever we play we'll prepare for and we can't do much until we find out."

Picton victorious: big clash with Narellan tipped

http://www.wollondillyadvertiser.com.au/story/1750072/picton-victorious-big-clash-with-narellan-tipped/?cs=1678
By Sean Cunningham

IN Sunday's Group 6 first grade rugby league elimination game, Picton ended Oakdale's season with a 32-10 victory at Thirlmere Sportsground.

Oakdale's coach Brendon Reeves was disappointed to bow out of the competition after having completed 13 wins and three losses in the regular season.

"We were simply outplayed on the day by Picton," Reeves said.

"You see time and time again the brand of footy they play in semis and it works.

"They give you nothing and grind you down at the end of the day.

"They will be hard to beat but Narellan are superb in the middle third of the field so it will be a very tough game.

"We simply never recovered from the representative season, we looked burnt out by the end of the season and have been playing the same way for two months now."

Picton will face Narellan on Sunday to decide which team will meet Mittagong in this year's grand final.

The Magpies will approach the game with an injury worry with fullback Rory Vale sustaining an eye socket injury.

Mittagong were the first team to reach this season's first grade grand final following a thriller on Saturday at their home ground.

The score was locked at 22-22 against Narellan at full time as the game went into sudden-death golden point time.

Sebastian Sell broke the deadlock with a try for Mittagong and sent his team into the grand final.

Narellan led 12-0 at the break but Scott Borg's two quick second-half tries put Mittagong back in the game before former Narellan player Ben Baker scored the final try for Mittagong in regular time.

Results:

First grade: Mittagong 26 Narellan 22 (after golden point extra time), Picton 32 Oakdale 10.

Reserves: Mittagong 42 Campbelltown City Kangaroos 22, Oakdale 25 Camden 4.

Under 18-1: Camden 36 Mittagong 28, Campbelltown City 30 Narellan 4.

Under 18-2: Appin 38 Thirlmere 34, Picton 26 The Oaks 6

Second Division:Bundanoon 26 Bargo 22, Warragamba 24 Robertson 18.

Preliminary finals on Sunday at Narellan Sportsground:

Under 18-2: The Oaks v Appin (8.40am); Under 18-1: Mittagong v Campbelltown City Kangaroos (10.15am).
