From the Macarthur Chronicle Group 6's Picton Magpies celebrate a century of football AMANDA PARTRIDGE MACARTHUR CHRONICLE WOLLONDILLY OCTOBER 15, 2013 9:43AM ![]() FOR the past 100 years the same chant has echoed around Picton after a game day win: "Who are we in the black and white? We are the mighty Magpies." With many accolades over the years and a first-grade premiership in 2013, Picton Magpies Rugby League Football Club is gearing up for its biggest celebration yet - its 100th birthday bash. The Country Rugby League Group 6 team formed in 1913. Clad in borrowed rugby union jerseys, they played their first game against Mittagong in 1914, scoring a 6-0 win in what would be the start of 100 years of success. Club secretary Jennifer Hughes said members were proud to be premiers in the centenary year. "We have always been a strong club in the Group 6 competition so this achievement really cements that fact and is a significant moment in the club's history," she said. ![]() Picton Magpies first team in 1914. Source: Supplied Making the highlight reel is the club's 1966 Clayton Cup win, awarded to the most outstanding team in NSW country football. The mighty Magpies were the first Group 6 team to bag the trophy. Ms Hughes said the club began as part of the Berrima District Rugby League Competition, borrowing jerseys in its first year. "In the following years they had blue and red jerseys, and after the first five years became the Picton Magpies and wore the black and white." "It's more than a club name or the jersey we wear. "It's about the people - each and every person that has come to a game, played for the club, helped in the canteen, bought raffle tickets, got up at 7am to take the kids to their game, ran the water or stayed out until 8pm for training. "That hasn't changed in 100 years." ![]() Picton Magpies second rower Ken Catford is carried off on shoulders after a grand effort in the 1966 grandfinal win. Source: Supplied TEAM OF THE CENTURY WHAT: Picton Magpies celebrates its centenary this year WHO: The club has produced players such as NRL stars Beau Scott, Jack Stockwell and Justin Broker CELEBRATE: The club will host a Black and White Ball at 6pm on Saturday WHERE: Victoria Park, Menangle St, Picton COST: $100 each or two for $170. It will be interesting to see how Picton turn out next year or will they be affected by the Group 6 Premiership voodoo. Mossvale has never recovered, it's taken Picton a few years to get over their last Grand Final win, Oakdale has never really looked a threat since, and the Campbelltown Eagles came dead last this year. Will Picton retain their 2013 team for 2014? With the All Stars V Indigenous game, I personally don't think it will work and I totally agree with TC6, would the indigenous team be strong? how many indigenous players are in the Group 6 Rep team? I can think of Ben Baker. |

I don't think our guys were that toothless, they did beat the eventual premiers twice, they only looked bad towards the important point of the year, but that was through my eyes, your eyes may have seen differently But that's neither here nor there, and 2013 is done with. I'm pretty sure there are a few indigenous players floating around in G6, Michael Lett, Ben Baker, Alan McGrath etc Edited by tc6_11, Oct 18 2013, 10:23 AM.

id prefer a city vs country concept myself NSWRL Jnr players vs Group6 Jnr players you could also include a 3rd grade team vs a Reserve grade all stars game you could even try and get the Group6 18s to take on Wests magpies Ball team!! Just an idea |

I think you would have the same result as the All Stars V Indigenous, City would put 50 on the country, would be one sided and I would have it at $1.01 Brutus. Wests Magpies S.G Ball team would put 100 on Group 6, Wests is the rep side of Wests Juniors, Group 6 and what ever talent may be scouted. |

You were more than toothless in 2012, and this year you didn't look so bad, but where did it go wrong for you this year Oakdale? the rumours that went around at the end of your season (if true) is what would of put a divide in your club, was that the down fall and who are your buys for 2014? is it true your losing a few guys to the oaks? |

We were very lacklustre in 2012, but we still made the semi's (I'm pretty sure we are on the longest current semi final run out of all the clubs (2006-2013)), and really we were in a position to beat Thirlmere @ Thirlmere, but weren't good enough. The rumours that circulated this year, i'd rather just leave behind. There are always rumours of some of our guys going to The Oaks, but does it ever eventuate? If anything, maybe a few Reggies will go there. We hope to announce a massive signing shortly. |

I'm not sure how you figure it's taken Picton a while to get over our last premiership. We made the GF against mossy the very next year!! Our record since the G6/Wests merger is: 2009 - Premiers 2010 - Grand finalists 2011 - 1 game short of the GF 2012 - missed the semis 2013 - Premiers Even with a very ordinary 2012 there, that's a pretty impressive 4 seasons since 09. EVERY club has their down times. Ours will come again, it's only a matter of when. As for next season, we'll see. I'm not one for bold predictions but I've already placed $20k on us to win the Clayton cup. |

Pretty sure I'm not serious! We'll have a good year. How good, I don't know. It sounds like a few other teams will be a lot stronger in 2014. |

Your record is pretty formidable, and knowing the culture of your club, it's a club built around mateship, good local juniors with a sprinkling of quality imports. |

So to cap off the season...narellan bought a premiership and didn't win..Oakdale bought back old boys because they thought they were the best and got no where..picton bought players half way through...if eagles were still there no nrl players and local juniors pretty sure they would of still taken it out..and still to this day are the best country team in nsw.......who will be the next Clayton cup winners..
