Derby round will rekindle Group 6 rugby league passion

The footy's back: Camden's Group 6 first grade team won't see any tries by hooker Matt Jones like this solo effort he scored against Narellan, as he has left the club. But the Rams have found a talented replacement in Chris Corby who was a back-up hooker to Wests Tigers Robbie Farah.

IT WILL soon be time for footy fans to arise from their hibernation and start enjoying rugby league action again.

The NRL competition starts in earnest next week, but for local footy-starved fans who enjoy their quota of "bush" rugby league, the date to pencil in on your calendar is the weekend of March 23 and 24.

The area's elite rugby league competition will feature a derby round to kick-start the interest in the Group 6 competition.

Camden, under the guidance of their new coach, former Bulldogs player Mitch Newton, will host Narellan at Kirkham Park.

The Rams have a young side and will face a tough test against a Narellan team which will be without the services of one of their star players Ben Baker.

The Oaks will take on Oakdale at Dudley Chesham Sportsground and hope to give new coach Leo Dynevor something to cheer about.

It won't be an easy proposition as Oakdale coach Brendon Reeves returns to the team which he led to a premiership in 2011 to take over from last year's coach John Stanley.

Reeves has attracted some of his old guard to return to mount a campaign once more.

Picton host Thirlmere/Tahmoor at Victoria Park and the Magpies have high hopes for success this season under the guidance of their new coaches Gary Dowse and Bryce Poisel.

The Roosters' task will be made more difficult with the loss of star pairing, the Trotter brothers, Trent and James.

Campbelltown City Kangaroos will take on the reigning premiers Campbelltown Eagles.

Kangaroos coach Drew Dalton's team faces an undefeated side from last season but the Eagles' ranks have been depleted with the retirement of a few players and some who have moved clubs.

One of those who will play at a higher level is last season's Group 6 first-grade top point-scorer, fullback Will Dreves.

But the Eagles seem to have found a willing replacement in former Narellan player Ben Baker.

Moss Vale return to the first grade competition this year and will face Mittagong in the opening round.

Mittagong's young side promised much last season with a great run of results before finally bowing out of contention in the play-off stages

New tricks for Camden Rugby from old Bulldog Mitch Newton

CAMDEN Rams Rugby League Football Club has beefed up the coaching staff for the 2013 season with former Canterbury Bulldogs player Mitch Newton returning to the first grade coach role.

Newton, a prop in the Bulldog's 1995 premiership winning side, took the first grade Rams to their last Country Rugby League Group 6 trophy as captain-coach in 2002.

Former Bulldogs clubmate, 2004 premiership-winning halfback Brent Sherwin, also joins the ranks of the coaches.

Newton said he had several goals for the season.

"First and foremost, the goal is to win Group 6 and I believe we've got the talent and the drive to take out the comp," he said.

Newton said players from Camden's 2012 winning under-18s side would be combined with senior players such as Neil Begovich and Chris Corby to create a strong squad.

"I love the history of the Rams but there's been incidents of poor crowd behaviour, so I want to create a family atmosphere where wives, girlfriends and children can enjoy rugby league," Newton said.

He said the key to creating a winning side was improving player fitness.

"Campbelltown Eagles won it last year and what stood out was their fitness, so we have to get our players to a certain level," he said. "Pre-season training will involve a lot of running and agility-based exercises." Newton was looking forward to a clash with rivals Narellan.

Whispers around that Dunley not happy at Eagles....did he cost the club a little extra to stay for 2013??? The tips out of Waminda have slowed to a trickle but there are still leaks in the plumbing hahaha

Awefully quiet at the moment with the Eagles boys and girls under media restraint. I thought any headlines were good headlines for the media conscious PR person who was always available for a quote. Either that or the storms cut the internet connections for said person who works under many aliases
Heard the opposite. Heard he'll captain easts this year?

Heard the points allocated have gone up? When was that voted in and what club initiated it. If true what will it mean? Strong get stronger or weaker build. Is it to attract higher level of players ie bundy and Nsw cup.

The points went up to reflect the fact that all 1st grade teams can now carry 4 fresh reserves, effectively meaning that clubs now have 2 extra players every week. Group management decided that with the average points per player under the old scheme being 8.5, the points will be raised from 300 to 317 (an increase of 2 x 8.5).
There is a pretty fair amount of discontent from several clubs, particulalrly since this type of decision (being an amendment to the by-laws) would usually have to be voted upon by the clubs.

There were 2 statements put forth by the group.
1. All clubs would receive an additional 17 points as per the 8.5 points per player average.
2. The bottom 2 clubs from each year will receive an extra 40 points for the following season.

I agree with these decisions, it's a good idea,
however i was told last year that you just can't change by-laws and constitutional laws. So i think we should be treading a little more carefully.

Might have clubs tanking to finish last or 2nd last to get an extra points for the next season. Will an extra 40 points help clubs? Not likely in my opinion as The Oaks are struggling and an extra 40 points ain't going to help. I guess the idea is to get a quality player in but overall a team that comes last or 2nd last probably needs 4 or 5 new quality players to be competitive.

If clubs are successful they usually have good committee, good juniors, good sponsors, good supporters, good fundraising ideas and good attitude. Even if one of those is missing it can be tough.

40 points will help a lot, 4 handy players from out of the area could help strenghten any bottom of the table team, and why would any team throw a game to possibly come last or second last, who wants that next to there name? I will be travelling down to Kiama this weekend, good to see Group 6 represented in the 9's, by Narellan, Campbelltown and Picton, would love to see any Group 6 club bring home a trophy.
