Any tips this year guys? I'm tipping Narellan, this is our year, guys are pumped and training the house down. Good ns on the Oaks, sounds like they are fielding in the 1st and Reserve Grade comp this year, after all the inuendos and speculations, the have done well. I did hear they had signed some handy players last week, can anyone from the Oaks fill us in?
don't peak too early.

1. De La Salle
2. Picton Firsts
3. The Oaks
4. Cronulla Caringbah
5. Picton Reserves
6. Camden (retired early)
So The Oaks did OK? Strong rumours that they're going to play 2nd Division.
What was the deal with Camden?
My thoughts on the teams that played:

1. De La Salle. A decent team. Nothing special. Our first grade saved their worst game of the day for the final. Earier in the day De La Salle beat our reserve grade by 8-6, the same score in the final over first grade. Fair to say De La Salle got better as the day went on though.
2. Picton 1sts. Sure, I'm biased but looked the best team all day apart from the final. Chris Young was outstanding. New players Tim Dengate and Blake Matthews also played very well.
3. The Oaks. Didn't outplay are reggies by much in game 1, but got better over the day. I think they'd agree they'll need a lot more numbers (and perhaps quality) to be competitive in 2 grades all year.
4. Cronulla-Caringbah. I thought looked the better of the Shire teams.
5. Picton reserves. Encouraging. Good signs for a potentially much improved season.
6. Camden. Hard to say. Lost 2 tight games against good teams and it's hard to tell much in 20 minutes each. Decided not to play the consolation game against our reggies which was fair enough. Based on the day I couldn't see them troubling the top teams, but to be fair they may have a lot moree than they showed on Saturday.

Expecting a bumper crowd on Sunday in gods country when moss vale take on mittagong at community oval, mossy were meant to have a trial with port kembla last week but was cancelled at the last minute so the Dragons maybe a little rusty going into the game. I'll be on hill doing this :drink:

Eagles top rivals' danger lists

Rivalry round: Eagles captain John Da Silva (left) and English signing Adam Jones, with the Men of League trophy up for grabs against Campbelltown City Kangaroos on Saturday at Campbelltown Sports Stadium. Picture: Jonathan Ng

MANY Group 6 first grade rugby league players have one thought on their minds on the eve of a new season: to lower the colours of the Campbelltown Eagles.

Reigning premiers, Clayton Cup winners and the undefeated team last season, the Eagles might as well incorporate targets on their jerseys this season.

Teams are intent on halting the high-flying Eagles' progress in their bid to win two consecutive premierships.

Many teams will have bolstered their ranks with emerging new talent but the Eagles are arguably still the undisputed favourites to go all the way again.

It will be no surprise to see the other teams step up a level when they face the Eagles.

Oakdale coach Brendon Reeves, who agreed that the Eagles deserve to be regarded as the competition's frontrunners, is one of many who will have his players fired up for the encounter.

"How could you go past them as favourites?" Reeves said.

"I'll tell you one thing though: talking to some other clubs, everyone wants to give it to them this year. They're being hunted."

Eagles' coaching co-ordinator Daniel Draper was reluctant to tag his beloved club as premiership favourites, but did say he believed the Eagles would be involved come crunch time at the season's climax.

Deflecting some of the attention off the Eagles, Draper named one of the Southern Highland outfits as premiership favourites.

"It has to be Mittagong, they are really a young and enthusiastic team," Draper said.

"We will be a force, no doubt about that.

"We have a fit team, fast backs and hard-working forwards. Our guys are looking forward to defending their 2012 premiership title.

"Narellan have bought well and look stronger from their top five finish last year, but Oakdale has Brendan Reeves and a vast majority of the 2011 premiership-winning team.

"Reeves is a brilliant coach and they will be hard to beat.

"It's going to be one of the best Group 6 competitions ever. I can see that."

Group 6 executive officer Stephen Hazelton believes there will be many benefits from a competition he thinks will be exciting this season.

"I believe this season is going to be more evenly matched, tougher competition with much closer games, which will be great for the spectators," Hazelton said.

The Eagles will start the competition on Saturday at 7pm when they take on Campbelltown City Kangaroos at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

The teams will be playing for the Men of League trophy in this rivalry round game

Yeah I'm very thankful that we have the roosters on Saturday night at Picton. That leaves Sunday open to head down and watch Hindy and the boys take on a very good Mittagong team. I'm working Sunday, but as soon as I get off I will be jumping in the car for a look. Looking forward to it.

League returns with local clash

By Lauren Wright

Andrew Bowie and Scott Borg

RUGBY league kicks off again on Sunday and what a huge weekend it will be.

Not only do Moss Vale play Mittgong in the always highly anticipated local derby on Sunday, but it will be the 100 year anniversary of the two teams playing each other.

Adding some star power to the occasion, former Moss Vale junior Nathan Hindmarsh and Scott Geddes, both NRL stars will take the field in red and white.

After 12 months out of first grade, the match at Community Oval will also celebrate the Dragons return to the top.

An extra year of first grade under their belts may just give the Lions the edge, but Dragons coach Andrew Bowie hasn't counted his team out of the running just yet.

"Mittagong won't have the edge on us. Hopefully we get up for the local derby. The win isn't beyond us, funny things happen in local derbies."

It has been a difficult 18 months for the Dragons after they dropped down to second division and have still struggled to get numbers again this year.

With no trial matches, Bowie said match fitness would be key for them.

"I think (we need) to compete for the whole 80 minutes. We haven't had a trial game so match fitness is going to be a key, just to keep grinding away and do everything that we've worked on at training, defence wise and complete our sets and just go forward. They're quite a quick side so we're going to have to slide pretty quick."

It will be a new look Dragons side with only a few players from last year's team backing up again in first grade.

Continued page 28

Moss Vale have managed to draw a few players back this season including Elliot Esquilant and will be hoping for some success with their new halves pairing of Harry Reicher and Luke Carr.

Reicher was a junior Dragon while Carr has played for Wentworthville, St George, Parramatta and is an Australian Oz Tag player.

"With Nathan and Scott coming into the side we're sort of relying on their experience. "

The Lions will be just as confident heading into the match after good results in both their pre-season trials where they drew against Berkely and gave Jamberoo a "pretty good touch up."

"We're looking alright, we've got a similar side so hopefully we should be good from the start this year," Lions coach Scott Borg said.

"It's good to have Moss Vale back in the comp and have the local derby back. We missed it last year."

The Lions have also made some good signings, including Robbie Payne who has played some NRL with the West Magpies.

"He's a front rower so he's going to help out Erin Blackshaw and Troy Martin a fair bit there."

The Lions also have some quality players coming back including Saxon Sell who broke his ankle in last year's under-18 grand final.

Zak Blackshaw has also been rules out after he injured his ACL again playing Oz Tag.

Jesse Bond has also stepped up to first grade after some good performances in reserve grade last year.

Luke played with my brothers at Fairfield Patricians. Been a steady hand at Wenty for a number of years. Will be a fine acquisition for the Dragons.
Hindmarsh would have saved 3-4 tries a game last year in the NRL with his last ditch defence and effort-upon-effort. How strong is our league this season?

Cheers Normy- since startup in 2009/10, it's been a slow process to build our own club, but we feel that we'll start to make some inroads this season.
Narellan came into Grade in 1983 and didn't make the semis until 1993.
Thirlmere came into Grade in 1984 and didn't make the semis until 1996, when they met Narellan in the GF.
We are working hard to make it in a little quicker than that!
