Lions beat new look Dragons http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1385028/lions-beat-new-look-dragons/?cs=264By Lauren Wright IT was the match the Highlands had been waiting for and they certainly got their money's worth at Community Oval yesterday afternoon. A new look Moss Vale came up against a young but experienced first grade Mittagong side but it was the Lions who took bragging rights home with a 34-16 win. While the Dragons did not have much preparation leading into the match and there were a few players who didn't meet until match day, they pushed the Lions for the entire match. Ryan Borg opened the scoring for the Lions early in the first half and Mittagong took a 6-0 lead. Former West Magpies player Robbie Payne and Ash Brown also scored in the first half for Mittagong and Justin Madden converted all three kicks. Scott Geddes was the only Dragon to cross the try line in the first 40 minutes and Moss Vale went to the break 18-6 down. The Dragons suffered a blow early in the second half when halfback Luke Carr left the injured but former Lion Brad Larter did a good job against his old club when thrown into the role. Moss Vale's star player Nathan Hindmarsh was relatively quiet but inspired the players around him and loud support from the vocal home crowd. Hindmarsh played the full 80 minutes and had a stronger second half with some solid tackles and a good line break which had the crowd up on its feet. Josh Champion then crossed the line for Moss Vale to bring them within six early in the second half before Lions skipper Scott Borg hit back to take the score to 24-12. New Dragon Chris Enahoro who has come from Newtown, barged over the line to give the Dragons some hope but two late tries from Payne and Ryan Borg in the final 10 minutes of the match sealed the win for Mittagong. More in Wednesday's News Justin Madden had a good day with the boot, missing only his final conversion while Payne and Ryan Borg played well to bag two tries each. In his maiden first grade game, Dylan Readman stood up at hooker for Moss Vale while Champion was also impressive in the centres, making a number of line breaks.
How good is this for mossy and the group, well done Hindy great bloke giving back to the bush and his junior club. Oakdale I'd say early season favs, Brendon Reeves seems to have them firing early, his doing well up there.
I agree Ozzie! oakdale mittagong gf my early guess would be: Don't deflect EASTS clear favouritism onto us. Undefeated premiers last year, very similar team this year to last year. Or are you saying that easts won a weak comp last year?

I think they lost some key players that played massive role into there succses last season, while you boys have gained the grunt yous missed! As for mittagong I think they were very unlucky last year on missing out on the final,an with a season behide them an the chance to grow as a team under borgy last year I think they will be a huge danger.. As for east still top four, just will be interesting To see how they will handle a much tougher outfit like use blokes! Can't wait

Thumbs up for Hindy!

This year will definitely be a much tougher comp with some of the players other teams recruited ... Our game on the weekend was pretty scrappy but in saying that it was our first hit out of the and and a few new boys still trying to work in with some combonations but we will take the 2 points ... a few more werks and we will be back to our best ... I think the roos will go much better this than in previous years ....

Them 2 half and 5/8 hoare at hooker gallant or weh at the back makes a strong spine to build around You got Corby, Trimarchi, Chris Young, Hoare, 2 x Borgs, Baker, Gallant for walk up starters. The rest can fight it out over the next few weeks and fill the other spots.

And my halfs wold be Scotty borg and wade wich leaves no room for Ryan. Still fantastic players though

Lions beat Dragons
By Lauren Wright http://www.southernhighlandnews.com.au/story/1389570/lions-beat-dragons/?cs=264
WHILE the 34-16 scoreline suggested a comfortable win for Mittagong over Moss Vale in first grade on Sunday, it was a much tougher match than what the scorecard reflected.
Both coaches were happy with the performance of their teams after their first real hit out for the year.
Moss Vale threw a team together on Friday night and coach Andrew Bowie said it was a great effort by his side to push the Lions all the way.
"It's a bit disappointing to lose such a big occasion but all in all we only threw a team together on Friday night so to match it with probably the second favourites to win the comp, we're only going to get better from here on in," he said.
"If we were lacking match fitness, we're going alright."
The Dragons got to within a converted try and one stage but the Lions experience shows through and they pulled away in the dying stages of the match.
"We matched it with Mittagong and that's what we wanted to do. We could have been in front, just a few silly errors, not completing our sets, knock ons, things like that. But we live and learn and we'll come back bigger and stronger."
Moss Vale's star power Nathan Hindmarsh said with several players meeting each other on match day, it was a solid effort from the new look team.
"Well it was their first hit out, we pretty much only met each other (yesterday) so we're all lacking a bit of match fitness I think and that's what got us in the end. I think they were just a bit fitter than us but (it's) promising," he said.
"We didn't really put much together except for just carting it up and offloading so I thought the boys did pretty good. A lot of dropped ball from both sides though but I think if they can tidy that up, just complete our sets and get to know each other a bit more we'll be right."
While Hindmarsh wasn't too familiar with most of the players he said Scott Geddes along with Elliot Esquilant and Josh Champion played well and admitted her was nervous being back in his first Group 6 match in front of a big Moss vale home crowd. For Lions coach, the win was a relief after last year's poor start to the competition.
"Everyone that I talked to (during the week) thought that Mossy would give it to us so it was actually a good win. You could tell that Hindmarsh and Geddes lifted everyone from their team and they gave it their all," he said.
While he was happy with the win, Borg said there were still a few small things to work on before their next match against Narellan in two weeks time.
"We played pretty ugly. I wasn't really happy with the way we played and we were getting frustrated but that's a credit to Mossy for making us play like that."
Mittagong's new front rower, Robbie Payne, who played a couple of games for West Magpies back in the late 1990s scored two tries on debut and Borg said he had a great match.
"I don't think he scored that many tries in his career and he gets two in his debut which is awesome, gets him off the nudie run."
Borg said Justin Madden was a standout in defence while Matt Thorpe also "tried his guts out."
Fitness was also an issue for Mittagong but Borg said with a few more matches under their belt and some hard work at training it wouldn't take them long to get up to speed.
"Fitness is a big thing for us. It's only round one so it'll come but we've got another week off now so it'll be like starting again."
"Ball control is massive. It felt like there was more scrums than there was play the balls in that game."
Mittagong's next match against Narellan will be on Saturday, April 6 at Narellan Sportsground while Moss Vale will also be away to Campbelltown Kangaroos on Sunday, April 7.

Reeves' men blitz it By Sean Cunningham http://www.wollondillyadvertiser.com.au/story/1390396/reeves-men-blitz-it/?cs=1678
Biff is back: Oakdale's David Lowe puts the squeeze on an Oaks player in the opening game of the Group 6 season on Sunday. Picture: Sean Cunningham
OAKDALE signalled their intentions in their bid to claim the Group 6 rugby league first grade premiership with an emphatic 60-12 victory over The Oaks on Sunday.
In the opening game of the season, a spirited Oaks team started well and trailed by 20-12 at the break but Oakdale piled on 40 unanswered points to seal the win in the second half at Dudley Chesham Sportsground.
Although his team won by a comfortable margin, Oakdale coach Brendon Reeves was angry at the way his team played during the first 40 minutes. He warned his players they could "get their pants pulled down" by the opposition if they repeated their first half performance.
"We just didn't have any fluency in the first half — it just wasn't there," Reeves said.
"The team looked like strangers out there at that time.
"It was unlike this side so it made me very angry. We just can't turn up expecting a win."
Oakdale put themselves under pressure in the game's early stages by gifting The Oaks the ball.
"We turned over too much of the ball in the first half. I wasn't happy," Reeves said.
"They came out with plenty of spirit in the first half and shocked us. It was a derby game . . . they're always tough and are never easy games.
"In the second half it was much better when we played some controlled footy."
The Oaks coach Leo Dynevor, in his first game in charge of the Group 6 outfit, realised his team was up against "a very good side".
"It gives us a good gauge to where we are," he said. "I think it came down to fitness."

Oakdale have their first trial against Wests Wollongong at Figtree. Both grades are playing with Reserve Grade starting at 3.30pm and First Grade 5.00pm While not all of both squads are available, we are still sending 2 pretty competitive sides down to play one of the best teams in bush footy.
a good test for you, wests are a strong club.
Strong club they will put a cricket score on them hahahaha lambs to the dlaughter
Dear Yoda Your views on this forum has become less than below average, your constant attempt to hide behind a Star Wars character that took 3 episodes before enlighten audiences in the trilogy has shown how low you have gone to attack people on this forum. Social Media has brought your identity out in the open and your intelligence and denial of who you really are and what club you are really associated to, is becoming overly boring. Your posting at 8pm when you knowledge of the result of the Oakdale game is ever so clear, does not show a good example of using the force my little green friend. Please don’t patronise my fellow forum readers and I that enjoy the daily updates on the Group 6 Competition, its time you let Yoda be a true Jedi Master and the Oakdale Yoda get on with being an assistant coach. See the group is trying to make all clubs with 18's play their 18's games on a Friday night, separate from the other senior sides. This absolutley ridiculous. Most clubs dont have an abundance of volunteers to spread across 2 days over the weekend. What about clubs that dont have sufficient lighting (i know its not many) but do they get a home in the proposed format???
The group arent even listening to the clubs. From all responses I had seen when it was first proposed only 1 club liked the idea at that was Mittagong. Why wouldnt they, they would get all home games for Highland teams until Mossy lights are upgraded.
All clubs need to make sure if they dont want it to voice their opinion. It would be a last resort but maybe boycott the games, withdraw side, drastic I know but the clubs run the group. The executive cant just make important decisions like this and ignore the majority of clubs
could be the straw that finally breaks the camels back? This doesn't affect our club, so i won't weigh in on it, but i think management were lucky to survive after they ignored clubs and entered into the combined competition back in 2009. Ignoring the pleas of clubs over this may see action. The management says that they dont read this forum, but a word of advice, i would start listening to the concerns of the clubs before the phrase "NO CONFIDENCE" begins to be uttered. I have heard some dissatisfaction at a game I attended on the weekend, not many people happy, can you fill us in more TC on what's going on?

I know it's still a little early but I'm sure you guys/ladies would have a opinion on who you think this years GROUP 6 rep team could be? A lot of quality blokes worthy of a crack!! Look forward to hearing opinions
Borgy would already be penciled in looking better than last season
I agree he will deffentitly be in the mix with wade any other thoughts for pos?
Them 2 half and 5/8 hoare at hooker gallant or weh at the back makes a strong spine to build around
You got Corby, Trimarchi, Chris Young, Hoare, 2 x Borgs, Baker, Gallant for walk up starters. The rest can fight it out over the next few weeks and fill the other spots. What about Geddes and Hindmarsh, they would have to be walk up starts.
