Found this on the Raiders supporters website re their admission to the N.S.W.R.F.L premiership of 1982: The Greenhouse The Canberra bid faced some stiff competition. There was also interest from Campbelltown, Newcastle and the Central Coast – all districts which were much closer to Sydney than the nation’s capital. Again Les McIntyre recalled: “Three districts were asked to put in a submission – there was Campbelltown, Newcastle and ourselves. Newcastle declined the invitation, saying they already had a very good competition and it would be decimated if a side was chosen to play in Sydney. It’s my opinion and I think it’s everyone else’s opinion, if Newcastle would have applied they would have been in. There’s no risk on that score”. The Canberra bid submission was delivered to the NSWRL on March 9, 1981 and presented at a meeting in Sydney on March 30 – alongside the bid from Campbelltown. The team representing Canberra and district included Les McIntyre, Don Elphick, George Tooke, Graham Ayre, Ron Edwards and Fred Daly. The Canberra bid had already selected Don Furner as inaugural coach, with a term of three years, should the team be admitted. Furner, along with the Member for Canberra, Ros Kelly, also attended. Bringing Furner on board was a smart, albeit obvious move. Indeed, it would never have succeeded without him. As a player, Furner had represented Queensland and toured with the 1956-57 Kangaroos. He coached the Queanbeyan Blues from 1965-69, but then moved to the big smoke to coach the Eastern Suburbs Roosters between 1970-72, taking them to the 1972 Grand Final. He then settled back to coach Queanbeyan Blues again, long term. He was therefore well known in Sydney League circles. Making Fred Daly and Ros Kelly – co patrons of the budding club – part of the team was also a plus. It was their job to put the case from the Canberra community. Daly was a long time Federal Labor politician, representing seats in the inner south west of Sydney, and a long time Newtown stalwart – but had retired in 1975 and lived in Canberra. He was famous for his wit, and became known as the “King of Canberra”. Ros Kelly was a popular local member, newly elected to the seat of Canberra in 1980. Kelly recalled the March 30 meeting: “I was told at rugby league headquarters as we walked into the room that no woman had officially step foot in that room before. I knew I had their attention for at least two minutes and told them it was their opportunity to grow rugby league in the region. Fred of course, made them laugh”. The Canberra submission highlighted that the admission of Canberra to the NSWRL was critical for rugby league’s development and growth in the region and to promote its popularity outside of Sydney. Canberra was sold as one of the fastest growing regions outside of Sydney and Melbourne. In addition, "in terms of status, Canberra, as the national capital is the front window of Australia, and rugby league should be prominently displayed". But McIntyre also warned in his submission that Canberra was a major target for the promotion of competitor codes and that rugby league was suffering in the district. He argued that admission of a team in Canberra was essential if this was to be turned around. That made sense, but the Sydney based clubs still had a healthy dose of self-interest at the top of mind. One significant issue was the distance to Canberra and the costs of travel for the Sydney teams. The Canberra submission pointed out that the flight from Sydney to Canberra airports took only 23 minutes – and all up, it would take only 40 minutes to get to Seiffert Oval. For the majority of clubs, that was as close in terms of travel as the Sea Eagles’ ground at Brookvale or the Panthers’ ground at Penrith. And right up front, the Canberra bid promised “to look favourably, by assisting in transporting the first grade team and officials at no cost who require this assistance.” But that was not clear enough. Les McIntyre recalled the March 30 meeting: “During Campbelltown’s submission [NSWRL chief] Kevin Humphreys came out and called me aside and he said, ‘Les, if you don’t get in there and promise to pay the expenses for the Sydney teams to come to Queanbeyan, you’re no chance.’ So I got in there and promised them the world. We kept those promises – the first year we did, we paid all their airfares and accommodation.” The travel costs were not the only issue. Campbelltown had presented at the March 30 meeting first and they adopted some spoiling tactics. Campbelltown delegate John Marsden provided statistics to the NSWRL showing that Canberra airport was closed by fog at least up until noon 39 times between March and September in 1980. The statistics caused several NSWRL delegates concern that matches might have to be called off, with Sydney teams stuck waiting at Mascot while planes were grounded. There had been some early betting that Canberra – with a well-financed annual budget of $660,000, a recognised top line coach and high standard ground – would win by 20 votes. But it was much closer than that on the night. The Campbelltown presentation had had its impact. At the end of the four and a half hour meeting on March 30, Canberra won out over Campbelltown by 24 votes to 18. At the same time, it was agreed that the possible admission of Campbelltown and Newcastle in 1984 would be considered at the next NSWRL meeting. |

A little bit of 'Alternate History'... what would things be like now if a stand alone Campbelltown- Macarthur district club had entered the 1982 premiership? No abortive merger with Newtown Jets... Magpies stay at Lidcombe... Liverpool- Campbelltown- Macarthur & the Highlands in a Newcastle/ Illawarra like Country Division... Would the team still be around or the lack of big money commerce in the Liverpool- Campbelltown- Macarthur & the Highlands regions see it go under with Super League and the rationalisation of 1999? |

1975 Group 6 The highlight of the season was the success of the Campbelltown City Club in annexing the First, Reserve and Under 18 Grade competitions. The success of Campbelltown City in First Grade allowed them to join Bowral and Mittagong Clubs in winning the First Grade premiership three years in succession. The City club has now achieved this twice (1969-1971 & 1973-75). The attendance at the Grand Final was a record with a sum of $2,700 being paid at the gate. Campbelltown City, led by former International John Greaves, played splendidly throughout the season. They played sixteen matches, won fourteen, lost one and drew one scoring 450 points for and 163 against. Campbelltown City comfortably defeated Oakdale in the semi-final 18-4 and defeated Ingleburn in the Grand Final 12-8 after being down 8-0. Ingleburn defeated Camden in the semi-final 20-8 and accounted for Oakdale in an action packed final 6-5 before losing to Campbelltown City. Campbelltown City Team K. Patrick, G. Moore, C. Campbelltown City defeated Ingleburn 33-8 in the semi-final and overwhelmed Campbelltown Collegians in the Grand Final 40-0. Collegians had defeated Camden in the semi-final 25-8 and Ingleburn in the final 12-8. Campbelltown City made it a treble when they easily defeated Camden in the Under 18 grade semi-final 21-3 and clinched the Grand Final with a comfortable win over the same team 19-9. Camden accounted for Moss Vale in the final 26-8 before going down to City. The Second Division competition was a most exciting one and was won by Berrima Gaol Colts the hard way. Berrima defeated Picton in the semi-final 12-11, accounted for Robertson in the final 18-12 and narrowly defeated Moss Vale in the grand final 15-13. Moss Vale had defeated Robertson in the semi-final 5-4 before going down to Berrima Gaol Colts. The standard of football throughout the Group was the best for many years which augers well for the future. Southern Division representatives in the Caltex Country Divisional Championship against Monaro and Riverina Division were:- Phil Flack (The Oaks), Ray Henry (Campbelltown RSL Warriors) and Kim Patrick (Campbelltown City). Leading Group 6 referee Les Ballard (Campbelltown) had an outstanding season officiating in the semi-final and final of the Caltex Divisional Championship, the Country Seconds v. Sydney Seconds, Illawarra v. England, Combined Country v. New Zealand and Newcastle v. Auckland in the Amco Cup. Ballard has now transferred to Group 12 and should be an acquisition for that area. Group Secretary, George Sloggett, was re-appointed a member of the C.R.L. Management Committee. On the occasion of the Major Semi-Final at Bowral, the new Club House was opened by C.R.L. President, Mr. A. M. Kingston, which was much appreciated by Group officials. Mr. Hilton Middleton (Thirlmere) was re-elected President of Group 6 for the twentieth consecutive year. My Dad is doing a few articles for the 100 Years of G6 book coming out this year. His articles will focus on the old Campbelltown area of the Group and its clubs. His first offering is: Campbelltown Collegians and Campbelltown RSL Warriors by Bruce Melville a.k.a 'Spectator' Campbelltown- Ingleburn News, Macarthur Advertiser & Macarthur Chronicle Group 6 journalist 1972-1986 The outstanding success of the Campbelltown Kangaroos in the 1969 season, winning the 1st and Reserve Grade premierships, resulted in an upsurge of interest in the sport throughout the new burgeoning city. All of a sudden the talk of the town was who would you support for the 1970 Group 6 season- the 'Roos, Campbelltown's team since 1908, or the newly formed Warriors or Collegians clubs. Both clubs hit the ground running. The Warriors had won the 1969 Under-18 Premiership and signed a large number of top notch experienced players, with tough Illawarra Divisional Prop Gary Tobin being appointed as their inaugural captain- coach. The Collegians had been fielding senior teams in the Sydney Catholic Youth Competition for many years and snared the signature of former Eastern Suburbs prop, Bob McDonagh as non-playing coach. To add extra spice, McDonagh had been the captain-coach of the Kangaroos from 1962-64. The local St. Johns Catholic Priest even stood up during Mass and ordered all Catholics at the Kangaroos to join the Collegians club! Admirably, the Collegians finished 1970 as Minor Semi-Finalists, a big effort in their first season. Both clubs enjoyed mixed success in their fourteen seasons in Group 6 1st Division 1st Grade. The Warriors won the 1972 and 1979 1st Grade premierships, and were Runners-Up in 1971 and 1978. They claimed Reserve Grade premierships in 1970 and 1973, whilst their U/18s teams triumphed in 1969 and 1981. 1972: Doug Page Premiership winning Captain- Coach 1979: Tony Herring Premiership winning Captain- Coach Collegians never won a comp in any grade, with a best placed finish as 1st Grade Runners-Up in 1973. Both clubs made the semi-finals on numerous other occasions. Both clubs brought many high-quality players to the Group Six competition. I've run out of old Yearbooks, so have decided to do old newspaper clippings. Scoreboard: Macarthur Advertiser March 10th, 1974 Premiership Shortened Following on from the decision by the Group 6 executive to accept the nominations of Ingleburn, Picton and Oakdale Workers for first division status, it has been decided to 'shorten' the competition by splitting the second round of the premiership into the 'Top' six and the 'bottom' six teams. The semi-finalists will be decided in the following manner: the first three semi finalists will come from the three top teams in the first six, while the fourth position will be resolved with a playoff between the team in fourth position in the top six and the leading team from the 'second' six. I feel that although it is somewhat unusual for a Rugby League premiership to be decided in this fashion the idea is basically very good and will add a lot of interest to the competition especially for teams in the lower bracket. The way the competition is shaping at the moment the Group will need all the 'gimmicks' it can think of to maintain interest, for it looks as though the Campbelltown City Kangaroos will start 'red-hot' favourites to win the premiership again. Their expected domination of the competition will 'kill' a lot of spectator interest. The second division competition has been abolished after one season and there will be a reserve grade competition consisting of fifteen teams. A most promising note for the future was the nomination of eight teams for the all important under eighteen competition. This particular competition has been in the doldrums for some time now. A strong junior competition is a must for the future of Group Six. Leumeah's Effort against Wyong pleases coach Leumeah's new coach Bruce Steley was extremely pleased with the efforts of his players in last Sunday's trial match against top Group twelve team Wyong. They held the Wyong team to three-all at half-time but the superior condition of the home team told in the second half, this match was Wyong's third game of the season. Leumeah was without the services of five regular first graders who were unable to make the trip due to work commitments. He singled out props Rex Kelly, Bob French and Garry Burke for their efforts in the pack, while centre Peter Barrett and fullback Stephen Jackson impressed in the backs although their opportunities were limited. My 'spies' also inform Steley was his usual dominant self around the rucks, his skilful ball distribution creating many opportunities for his 'running' forwards. He will be a big asset to the Wolves. Leumeah's big weakness is in the half and five-eight positions, although they hope to ease the problem with the signing of an evergreen player who has had grade experience with Balmain and has played for two other group six clubs over the past four seasons. Kangaroos 'Signing' Campbelltown City Kangaroos have announced the signing of another three players, they are: Top front row forward and club stalwart Ron Kain, ace young centre three- quarter Kim Patrick who had been keen to join Illawarra premiers, Thirroul, and brilliant goalkicking fullback Alan Stephens. It is also almost certain former Southern Division halfback Ken Millard, currently recovering from a successful knee operation, top utility player Rod Berridge and elusive winger Greg Ives will sign with the club in the near future. Another ominous waring to other Group Six clubs with premierships aspirations was the reappearance of former top lock-forward Gary Moore at training. A devastating cover-defender he has 'filled out' considerably over the past twelve months. If he can maintain his interest and dedicate himself to the game, Country selection would be well within the grasp of this talented player. Ron Girard signs with Shellharbour Workers Former top Kangaroo five-eight or centre Ron Girard who played a big part in the Roos premiership wins of 1969 and 1970 has signed with Group Seven premiers Shellharbour Workers and is currently building a home in the Shellharbour area. He will be leaving the Campbelltown area in the near future. He has decided to play again after a twelve month 'lay-off' and is eagerly awaiting the season with his new club. His goalkicking will be a major asset to Shellharbour. I am sure he will carry with him the best wishes of all League followers in Campbelltown. Edited by Orana87, Mar 5 2013, 10:37 AM.

I thought this was the appropriate place to put this, source: https://www.facebook.com/WesternSuburbsMagpies ![]() RIP Garry Dowling On this day, 5th March 1983, former NSW and Australian fullback Garry Dowlilng died from a car accident on the Gold Coast. Garry was an immensely strong running fullback who could have easily played in the forwards such was his strength but his explosive speed from fullback made him a lethal attacking weapon. He played his junior football in Group 6 with The Oaks & Oakdale before joining Canterbury in the early 1970's and was Canterbury's fullback in their 1974 Grand Final loss to Eastern Suburbs. He played twice for NSW the following year in pre State Of Origin days. He was Canterbury's fullback for several seasons until the arrival of Greg Brentnall in 1977 eventually saw Garry pushed out to the wing. He then joined Parramatta in 1979 where he again played in his favourite position as fullback and scoring a career best 14 tries that season. The following season he made his long overdue Australian debut in the two test tour of NZ. Garry played just the 2 tests for Australia and perhaps was lucky in that when he began his carrer, Graeme Langlands, an immortal, was the incumbent fullback and as Langlands career was coming to a close, another strong, explosive running fullback in Graham Eadie was given the nod. ![]() Garry joined Western Suburbs in 1981 and continued his great form from fullback where played two games for NSW - the first in a non state of origin match scoring 2 tries (this was the last time NSW and QLD would play in a non State of Origin match) and the one off State of Origin match that year (he was on the bench). He played 19 of Western Suburbs 22 first grade premiership matches in 1981 scoring 5 tries. He made his premiership debut for Wests in their round 1 loss to Manly at Lidcombe Oval. Garry left Sydney after 1981 to play on the Gold Coast and played for their representative team, the Gold Coast Vikings. Group 6 have an award named after him which is presented at their annual presentation night , the "Garry Dowling rising star award " . Edited by disco stu, Mar 5 2013, 01:24 PM.
