Would be a great initiative by G6 clubs if they could post 1st grade sides on Fridays or something. Here or even the G6 Facebook page. Negative of the opposition knowing whose named against positives of interest, discussion and publicity that it may help create. Every person that knows about the games and players is another possible $8 through the gate. Picton against another cobbled together Thirlmere outfit the big interest to me. Local derby and premiers vs some pretty well credentialed players but can't see them having enough support. Picton a good shout for Claytons Cup from where I sit

Its a great idea but I dare say it wont happen, cause the clubs and Group are too lazy or dont care in promoting themselves. Promoting the game gets people throught the gates which equates to more dollars in the coffers of clubs, but looking at their own websites and they are outdated or non existant of info. Pity the sponsors trying to get a return on their investment.

Do any clubs produce game day programs? Of late the home team would have their teams but the visiting sides would have the "Listings Not Available At Time of Printing" excuse, which is a cop out. Supporters want to see who number 4 is that scored the try, or number 12 who made the big hit on number 6, so they can follow them through out the year.

My season preview for 8 first grade clubs love to hear some feedback and opinions
Picton magpies
* early favourites
* key players - lett,poisel, Thompson,Taylor and provost
Magpies will be hard to stop this year I think will finish the regular season 1st
Mittagong lions
* I think mittagong can go one better and will be there about a at the end of the year
* key players borg,Borg, Thorpe, Payne,carter
* 2nd after the regular season
Narellan jets
* jets have bought well again this year but can they get the premiership in my opinion close but not close enough
* key players - trimarchi,Hopkins,packi,king
* jets to bow out in the semis again
Campbeltown City
* hard to know with city this year enough qaulity to cause a shake
* key players - big prop not sure his name, young half Walpole
* city to fight for finals with a few other clubs
Camden rams
* benifits of oakdales fall from first grade
* key players - cashmere, pes , conlon , white
* rams to scrape in at 5th ( maybe )
The oaks tigers
* plenty of good young signings for 2014 but can they gel
* key players - the 5 bs Brasington brothers and former ram Neil Begovich
* may cause a few upsets but will lack consistency in my opinion
Appin dogs
* new guys on the block
* key players - Flanagan,moon, weh, masters
* another team who it think will struggle with consistency but on there day will be a arm wrestle
Thirlmere roosters
* big turnover of players

Professionalism across the Group needs a huge step forward. Groups around NSW have naming rights sponsors and far greater media coverage then G6. It's a tough battle being so close to Sydney and the NRL but we do ourselves no favors. Clubs don't use the media that they have at their disposal and have in my opinion failed to capitalise so far on a great opportunity with 2MCR. We could have (insert sponsors name) Saturday night game of the round. Sell a Saturday night program for $2 on entry with the rest of the weekends 1st grade (at least) games and lineups to build interest for Sunday. Hell have a paragraph of two on each matchup so people have some sort of narrative to follow. People love the story that goes along with the game.

It would be easy to do. Other groups do it. Go to a Group 7 game and take note in how EVERYTHING is run better then G6 and we're not that far apart - they have the Coal League to compete with too... But if one things for sure it won't happen! I'll let others speculate as to why, but regardless it just won't happen.

In terms of a season preview I've got Picton a long way out in front alongside Mitta. Narellan a clear third, but from there flip a coin. All the other sides have sprinklings of quality but also glaring weaknesses in depth and quality which I expect the other three sides to expose. Picton with the addition on Donny Thompson at the back and a further strengthened forward pack heavy faves for me

Fair analysis Taco.

Picton with the addition of Thompson, Thompson, Dreves, Ahovelo are now even more formidable, and will field one of G6's greatest ever backlines. They'll be needing their Reserve Grade to stay alive though, as I believe the maximum points for a standalone 1st Grade team in a semi final series is 200? I may be wrong, but this figure/ rumour has been bandied about.
Lett 40, Don Thompson 20, Les Thompson 20, Will Dreves 20, Ahovelo 20, Dengate 25, Matthews 25. There's 170 there.
$1.50 heavy favourites. $2.50 the Clayton Cup

Mittagong have the competition's best spine. Best young roster in the Group. The finishing class of Ben Baker will be missed in crucial times. $4

Narellan will be tough. Have recruited well, including Baker's try scoring class. Remember that Matt King only plays select games and would be unlikely to feature in a final series. $5

The Oaks are building well. I like what Dynevor has been able to do up at Dudley Chesham. Brasso's & Begovitch add much needed class to a grafting team. $33

City have a new team on the park. New coach, new roster with some surprises for Sunday, including about 4 players capable of playing for the Group. Done well to raise 3 senior Grades after only having 10 at training following Paul Jarvis' passing on Australia Day. $16.

Camden big time beneficiaries of Oakdale's demise. Cashmere, Pes, Conlon etc will really help the club's burgeoning talent stocks. $20

Thirlmere rebuilding. But they have fair players in Gordon, Paea, Trotter to help rebuild with. Gordon going to be superfit having done and NRL pre-season. Big bonus of the Reserve Grade team and the culture that these men will instill in Thirlmere's talented young players as they get blooded in grade. Thirlmere has the Group's biggest junior nursery and with Horner, Sutton, Carlyon, Miller etc committed to the cause, the talent pipeline should restart. $25.

Appin have a great team on paper. Best 9 in the Group. Plenty of experience. Will win their fair share of games. I'm really worried about the consequences of them not having a Lower Grade team, consequences will be for this season and their future. I hope I'm wrong here.

A few points on here 'bagging' various stuff around the Group. We have a fine, local competition that has stood the test of time. Yes, clubs and admin could be 'more proactive', and the Group is undeniably under resourced. It is a league of big hearted volunteers who love Rugby League and love their clubs. Society somewhere got ridiculously busy (wasn't the computer/ smartphones supposed to make things easier??) and I wouldn't go too hard on volunteers. It's a lot easier of a Sunday these days to switch on the plasma, watch the NRL and crack a coldie... than man the gate for 6 hours... or cook the BBQ... write match reports at 8pm Sunday night after setting up the fields at 8am...

Roos hope to bounce back

CAMPBELLTOWN City Kangaroos start their Group 6 rugby league season on Sunday when they take on first grade newcomers Appin at Fullwood Reserve, Claymore.

The Kangaroos reached the play-offs last season, finishing the regular rounds in fifth position on the ladder, and will be hoping to repeat the feat this season.

The Kangaroos won eight games and lost eight last year under the guidance of player-coach Drew Dalton, who has now left the club.

New coach Paul Matthews has taken the reins.

Matthews, who was assistant coach with Cabramatta in the Ron Massey Cup last year, said he was happy with what he'd seen at training.

"So far I've had five sessions with the boys," he said.

"We have a lot of young blokes on the books this year and if I get another few signings it will put things in place.

"I hate losing in anything and I expect the boys to be on board with that too.

"There's been nothing negative and that's the approach I want.

"It'll be a tough game against Appin as they seem cashed up and have signed a few decent players. But we'll give it a shot."

Kangaroos will be buoyed by the return of hooker Ryan Russell and Josh Radford and new recruits Michael Graham — who came from Corrimal — and Willie Taukafa, who played with Wynnum in Queensland, as well as fullback Josh Burke and Cody Timoti from Yass.

Kangaroos director Alex Melville said Manu Aso'ava would be one of the players to watch this season.

"He's a highly skilful back-rower and enforcer of the competition," Melville said.

"Corey Walpole is an emerging halves star of the competition and Ryan Russell, former St George and Penrith reserve grade hooker, holds the ruck together with his guile and subtlety."

The Group 6 season starts a day earlier on Saturday at 7pm when local rugby league returns with a blockbuster first grade clash featuring Narellan versus Camden in the opening round.

The Jets will host the Rams at Narellan Sportsground with both teams fielding an abundance of quality.

One of the drawcards will be former NRL players Matt King (Rabbitohs) taking to the field for the Jets and former Wests Tigers and North Queensland Cowboys player Ray Cashmere pulling on the Rams tricolours.

In other first grade games, Thirlmere host Picton, while Mittagong and The Oaks will have a bye.

The opening Group 6 game of the season will also see a reunion of the 2004 Camden and Narellan grand final teams.

Under-18s will start at 4pm and reserves will kick off at 5.30pm.

I am completely in awe of the side Picton have been able to put together. The back line is outstanding and the luxury of Blake Matthews in the backrow alongside what was already one of the toughest (and often most underrated) packs is a huge plus for Picton. I'm assuming they're banking on a number of 'new' 3 year 2 point players?? Mitta will push them all the way but I think Picton have skipped further ahead then they have...

Probably came off a little harsh on the Group before. It's just I look at something like this forum - a wonderful resource and asset to be exploited, one that other groups would die for and it isn't exploited properly. There are 2 maybe three clubs represented in an unofficial official capacity and the others are either too lazy or don't see the point ... I don't understand that mentality at all. If we could start with Friday morning emailing team lineups a 5 min copy and paste job and upload at a central location would do wonders. The teams wouldn't even have to be THAT accurate. Just feed the news cycle people - is footy people love it. Credit to Orana and TC in particular who do this for their clubs!

Wasn't aware City were shaping up so nicely Orana. Plenty of talk around Asu'ava all pre season so he's one to watch out for, but Ryan Russell is a huge acquisition at 9 - I was under the impression he was retired? Things change quickly in footy!! What can you tell is about Radford, Timati and Taukafa? Who are your four capable of playing group footy? Been light on in quality last few years in the spine, Walpole still needs support, he's still so young!

Our teams for this weekend will be something like this:
1st grade:
1. Don Thompson
2. Rory Vale
3. Michael Lett
4. Blake Matthews
5. Ben Hierlehy
6. Will Dreves
7. Tim Dengate
8. Brett Clarke
9. Anthony Provost
10. Chris Young
11. Luke Monds
12. Alex Peters
13. Kiel Shephard
14. Matt White
15. Tenisio Ahovolo

Reserves:
1. Pat Williams
2. Eric Everett
3. Nick Taylor
4. Kyal Kennedy
5. Mark Pudney
6. Barry Baird
7. Brett Reilly
8. Les Thompson
9. Scott Davies
10. Brendan Shephard
11. Ricky Watson
12. Shane Valentine
13. Jarred DeBritt
14. Jay Dreves
15. Tom Burke
16. Daniel Morgan
17. Liam McDonald
18. Beauden Patrick
19. Matt Dengate

Should be a great arvo of footy. Thirlmere are a bit of an unknown quantity in 1st grade, but obviously our squad is pretty strong.
The reserve grade clash may overshadow it. Can't wait. Decent chance of fireworks. There's been bad blood since a couple incidents in the 9's two weeks ago and lots of banter since. It's well documented how good the roosters Reggie's will be, latest rumour us Justin Miller has joined the old boys to play. But, that's the best reserve grade team we've named in 5 years, hands down, and one of the best I've ever seen.
Bring on Sunday!!!!

Unfortunately Taco, that story was published on the basis of an email I'd written in January, prior to Jarvo's passing. Ryan Russell was too upset by Paul's passing and elected to stay in retirement at that time. Cody Timoti is a former player of the year from Yass in the Raiders Cup and will acquit himself well in G6. Our two main spine players- McLeod & Wilson return from Sweden in late May- they'll be automatic inclusions... but Chris Bostock is a very handy player and will acquit himself well in G6 1st Grade. We have an NRL prop set to debut against Mittagong in Round 3... whose father and uncle played for the club in the 1973-75 premiership wins.
