Strong word tonight out of Thirlmere that Matt Groat has signed for this season... Cockpit?

City training is progressing nicely. Over 50 players already makes for a crowded Fullwood, plus a good BBQ to finish the night. Light on for top-tier 1st Grade talent, at the moment, but hopeful...

So Thirlmere have signed the Trotter brothers, Nathan Merritt, John Kite, Matt Groat and from all reports have kept Buddy Gordon and Eddie Paea plus added another Paea? Do we have new premiership favourites? Groat and Kite is some sort of front row. Trotter will be unstoppable if he plays 9 behind them two.

Their is a reason why Matt Groat was dumped from Wests Tigers first grade to Wests Magpies RMC. To me footy is nothing to him anymore he is just happy being in Sydney not in the bush going out and having fun, heck he's probably over the moon he isn't in Salford. :agree:

So, looks like its back to square 1, whoever has the bigger bucks wins the comp :letmesee:

The likes of Thirlmere, Picton (dont deny it), Appin and to a lesser extent Narellan and Camden have the pick of players on the market. It is sad that Gr 6 clubs poach and cannibalise each other to build their club but also ruin another. (Borgs to Rams, 1/2 Oakdale to Appin, Groat to Roosters, Trimarchi to Magpies etc)

Gr 6 Management need ultimately need to TIGHTEN the points and if clubs need/want to recruit to progress they have to look outside Gr 6. The likes of Oakdale, Mittagong, Moss Vale and The Oaks get to a point of being competitive then another club comes in and offers more coin to a handy and much needed player and all the years of hard work is out the door.

Some will say that is the nature of a free market - the survival of the fittest - but when it gets to a stage where we only have 4 clubs in a 1st grade comp and 15 in a 3rd Division whats the worth of winning a 1st Grade comp???

"Don't deny it"
Another typical show of how clueless you are.

Even though I know I shouldn't bite, here goes:

After spending two years as treasurer in 12-13 I can assure you Picton is not a wealthy club. Unlike certain other clubs we also don't have the luxury of a wealthy benefactor.

Yes, several players are on good (but not great) money. The fact is, however, the squad stays together because it is built on a basis of success and a large proportion of local juniors. Pretty much every player in our top 17 or even 25 players could get significantly more money elsewhere. They choose not to. Luckily we have a small group of class imports that buy into the local culture and don't consider themselves better than anyone else.

Last year all but one player (who signed a contract prior to the end of '13) accepted win based payments, regardless of what they were on the year before. The club ended the year in a strong financial position due to moderate player payments and smart fundraising.

Don Thompson and Michael Lett would have to be two of the highest played players in the group, no? But then the output from those two far outstripped the value for money Thirlmere or Narellan get for throwing their cash around willy nilly I guess. Back to back justifies the outlay.
The real strength of Picton is that they have had a stable squad for the past 3+years and player points aren't a problem because they have so many 2 point local
Juniors or naturalised locals. Something big spending Thirlmere and Narellan could learn from. Both those sides have had completely different squads year to year and it appears as if 2015 will be no different. If you keep what you have and add 2 players every year, anyone could put themselves in Picton's spot

Picton and Camden are a perfect example of how to do it right ... Keep your qaulity juniors as a base and add a few to give you the X factor unlike jets roosters who have different team year in year out which is fine for now but when the money stops coming in were will those team be ? Struggling I'd imagine this is were the pints system needs to be inforced or the rich teams get better and the poor teams get worse

No. Both have knocked back substantially higher offers from elsewhere to stay.

Yes Rumours were that groat was at the pub last night, not sure if he definately signed but it's looking positive. Where is the cash coming from? The offer of jobs worth $1000 plus a week helps keep the cost to the club down. Although I've heard they still get good coin from the club.

As far as I'm aware all the high profile players are jot locked in yet, they are exploring options at higher levels but if things don't work out they will return. Also as I've said before Trent suspended until June/July.

Was groat let go by Salford? Massively overrated hence why he ddnt crack the dragons severely depleted forward pack.

So Thirlmere has:
- James Trotter
- Sione Kite
- Matt Groat
??Eddie Paea
Trent Trotter back in June.
Blake Judd to Newtown. Buddy Gordon to Wyong.
Not enough to go past Picton, Appin, Camden and Narellan just yet.

You don't think Trotter playing off the back of Kite and Groat puts Thirlmere ahead of Fraser and Low at Narellan or Gibbs and Flanagan at Appin Orana?

City seemed to have dropped off the face of the planet and next to nothing is known of squads at Oakdale, Mittagong and Moss Vale, while the Oaks seemed to have consolidated on last years roster gains, but that was good enough for 2nd last in 2014 can't see it magically improving for 2015...
