What exactly is a game engine? I mean I think I know a little bit, but I'm not really sure what they control.. For example.. If two completely different games share the same engine, what things would they have in common? Hope that makes since, I'm finding it difficult to find a better way to ask this question :/ |

A game engine is the graphical representation of the game, and the one of the core parts of it. It is basically just a program that is running the game. When an engine is chosen for example the Unreal Engine, you would need to start programming the enigne to suit your game, from here models can be dropped into editers so levels can then be produced. TNA iMPACT uses the Unreal Engine but so does Gears of War, what they share is the core parts of the engine, such as poly limits shaders etc, gameplay is done by programmers, the engine on its on really is just there to hold everything together and each one may be more effective ay different thing. Like one may be good at rendering lots of enemies but anouther one could be great at rendering in door enviroments and which could have a well designed lighting system. Engines also vary on quality such as how it effectively it use the power inside a console. There is alot of factors to take in to account though with engines. |
