This is a review of the book Into The Wild that I posted on another forum. I would like to hear what you guys think about it and if you have ever felt the same way Chris McCandless and I have. Have you ever been so fed up with society and it rules and the injustices of this world, that you just wanted to leave society behind,be alone and live of the land that has been unspoiled by greed and hate? I'm not doing this to start any arguments about how stupid any one is. I just want to know what you would do. Thanks! I hope you like my review and I hope you'll all read the book!! I'm not sure why I gave this book 5-stars. It's one of the saddest things I've ever read. I've read plenty of fiction that has made me cry. And that has made me think "This could really happen", but this DID really happen, and it really hit home for me. A young man named Chris McCandless took off after his college graduation on an adventure that eventually led to his death in the Alaskan wilderness. Many have said he was mentally ill or a spoiled brat, or just downright stupid. It could have been a combination of all 3. But in my opinion, he was just so put out with rules and laws that made no sense to him and the injustices of the world and society itself, that he wanted to get away from it all for a while. I confess I've been in that same frame of mind myself. I have lost sleep while fuming about the people who are starving in this world, while there are others who are building mansions with crystal chandeliers for their chihuahuas. There are laws in place that I vehemently disagree with and some "rules of society" make me sick on my stomach. I have often dreamed of just taking off and being separate from the world for a time. I guess part of me admires Chris McCandless for having the guts to follow his dream. It wasn't always easy for him, and it ultimately cost him his life, but he followed his dream when most of us just think about it and stay miserable in the lives that society deems appropriate. That being said, although there is a part of me that admires him, I am a mother of 2 sons. The "mother" part of me wants to throttle the young man and then give him a big hug and beg him to come home! I cannot begin to imagine not knowing where one of my sons was, never hearing from him for 2 years, and finally hearing that he had died alone, from starvation in the wild. I don't think anything could be more heartbreaking for any parent. I honestly don't know if I could survive something like that. Chris McCandless made mistakes-a couple of grave ones. But it really upsets me to read what all the haters have to say about him. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I don't think anyone has the right to judge. None of us really knows what was in Chris' mind, heart, or soul. Edited by Alex, Aug 22 2010, 06:02 PM.

| I understand why he did it, but he definitely could have gone about the whole thing in a better way. And it kinda proves a point of why people put up with the way society is. |

| But would you do it? Have you ever thought about doing it? If you were prepared. Aside from not letting his parents know what he was doing, I think he did okay. He made a couple of grave mistakes that cost him his life, but other than those things, it's probably the same way I would do it if I had the guts. |

| I might would do it, but I would be much better prepared than him, and I don't think I would pick Alaska. |

I think about it nearly everyday. A life with no electricity, no internet, no phones, no TV, no WRESTLING, to most people probably sounds boring. To me it sounds like Peace! This mans story is tragic. But no more tragic than the stuff that can, and does happen every day in the civilized world. I'd much rather take my chances with wolves, bears, snakes, mountain lions, etc. then I would with murderers, rapists, kidnappers, and lawyers. His story is sad, but it's just one case of what can happen when you live that kind of life. It doesn't mean it happens that way for everyone. |

| There are several examples in the book of other people who did similar things. Some had good outcomes, some not. But I agree with you. I'm more afraid of walking through a big city than through the wild. I'll admit I hate snakes and I wouldn't handle that very well at first. But to live without the worry of utility bills, keeping up with the Joneses and what people expect of you in this modern day society would be absolute peace!! |

| Exactly. It's no more dangerous to live alone in the wild, then it is to live alone in the city. It may be more dangerous if your already use to one, and then up and move to the other. But there are dangers everywhere. It's all about personal preference. I prefer peace and quite, wide open spaces, full of wildlife, other prefer this crazy, fastpaced world, full of stress, and noise, and foolish people. |

| I have to admit I've become accustomed to modern conveniences such as microwaves, frozen foods, and the internet. But if I could have a life of peace, I think I could get used to doing without those things. I think wanted this time to find out his purpose in life and to prove to himself,if no one else that you don't have to conform to society's idea of success to be happy. One of his claims was that careers were inventions of the 20th century and having one was not a requirement for having a good life. I couldn't agree more! |

To me society is broken in the way things are set in motion at a young age to follow a certain path and if you want to do something different than the norm you have to break out of it. I was in a similar mind set a few years ago and it opened my eyes to a lot of things, and changed who i am today. I can understand wanting to leave society but to me i would rather change it or make a statement about it to help people decide on their what they want so they to can open their eyes so they can becoming something more than what society would expect. |
