Very good point Matt! A girl I used to work with was under a lot of pressure to go to nursing school and she REALLY didn't want to go,but her family and friends insisted she had to have a career to get by. I told her not to go if she would be miserable and the fallout was horrible! I think everyone should follow their own dreams whatever society may think. I would love to go off alone, cut off from the rest of the world for a while, but I don't know if I would want to live the rest of my life that way. Chris McCandless kept a diary of sorts and toward the end of his life he wrote-"HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED". He did intend to come back from Alaska, but the rivers had become to dangerous for him to cross at the time and he died before he got another chance. He didn't hate people in general, just the rules that society forced on him and everyone else. I'm sorry I keep running on about this, but this story affected me more than anything I've read in a long time. :)

It's all good. It's a very interesting story. I too would like to get away for awhile. I think most people would. I've never understood people who go on vacation to loud crowded places like Miami, or Vegas. If I get a chance to go on vacation, I'm going someplace quite, as far away from people as possible. Someplace like Alaska.

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife. Proverbs 17:1
Seemed sort of relevant.

Very relevant. What good is a successful career, big house and lots of money, if you're not happy with life and who you are? I've never been rich, but I'd like to think that if I ever get there, I would use it to help others. McCandless was from a very well-to-do family and instead of partying, he spent his weekends buying food and passing it out to the homeless. He also gave his savings acct. which was in excess of $24,000 (not shabby for a 22 yr old) to OXFAM. I don't know how people can live with themselves if they have more than they'll ever know what to do with, while others are homeless, hungry and sick.

I agree completely. This guy seemed like a good dude. Perhaps that's why he died so young. Because he was too good for this evil world. Crazier stuff has happened.

Yeah, he does seem like a a really good dude. I'd heard about him before I read the book, but I really didn't know a lot about him or why he did what he did. After I read his story and what the people he met on his adventure had to say about him, I have a lot of respect for the guy. I believe he could and would have made a tremendous impact on the world, had he lived. But then again, I guess he did anyway. He died in 1992 and people still take the trip out to the abandoned bus where he lived and died just to be in the same place he was. Maybe you're right about him dying so young. People tend to take advantage of good folk.

The world can be a great place but the human race needs to change first, at the moment things are messed up in the way things are run or expected to run, so many things are frivolous and are caught up in paper work.
What you mentioned about good folk taken advantage of his true, the world could do with people who can be looked upon as heroes who do the right thing, we could do with the likes of a Martin Luther King to prompt change.

Absolutely! So many people today have the attitude that they are the only ones who matter. They're obsessed with having the better cars, homes, clothes, even the kinds of pets they have! If folks would just realize we're all here and we're all in this together whether we like it or not, the world would be a much much better place. It's just as easy IMO to help someone up as it is to kick them when they're already down. It seems to me more people would liked to be remembered as a hero, someone who was looked up to, rather than for how big their house was or how much money they had or that they had a fleet of automobiles. I would love to have lots of stuff, but not at the expense of others suffering.

For me i would like to have money but purely for the fact it would help achieve my goals and to learn more about things. I find living just for money is a waste and shallow i for one want to be remembered for my work and the impact it had on people, in 20 years time if i meet someone who has been in contact with it whatever it might be and they say 'this helped me work thigs out', 'your work influenced me' that kind of things makes it all worth it.

That's the outlook I have on money as well. If you haven't had any positive impact on anyone your whole life, what's the point. There is enough money in this world that no one should be hungry or homeless or without proper clothing. If people don't want to just give their money, they could use it to start businesses, even small ones would create much needed jobs! I think this is part of McCandless' message. His parents were wealthy, but in his eyes, they didn't use that wealth to any positive effect. In fact he became furious with them because they wanted to buy him a new car for a graduation gift. His car was old and unattractive, but it worked fine and he was happy with it. They just didn't want their son to drive an old beat up car.

I guess y'all have said it all already. I don't have much to add concerning money. Except that I think people should be neither rich, nor poor.
