What does Christmas mean to you?

Just thought it would be cool to see what people think. Christmas has changed somewhat for me when I younger I loved the whole buildup to Christmas, the presents everything really I loved it. Now, although I still enjoy it for some reason it just doesn't feel the same anymore, kind of feels like the spark has gone out. One thing I still love is Christmas dinner I could eat that forever without ever getting tired of it and it does get me in the Christmas mood as soon as I smell it, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. The christmas stuffing, and the litte sausages are so damn good and mixed with mash, turkey and wine :D

I know Christmas is a religious holiday but that aspect never comes to mind.

Great topic! I'll try to respond without too much bah humbug. Like you, I enjoyed Christmas a lot more when I was little. Now, it has grown to be nothing more than a hassle. You're made to feel obligated to buy gifts for and spend time with people you don't really even like. Most of the traditions we had when I was growing up are over now. Some people are too busy, some don't care anymore and some have passed away. I do enjoy the meal and I do a lot of cooking, baking and candy making for Christmas and for the most part, I enjoy that. My mother always insists on going all out with the decorations even though I don't think anyone even cares anymore. And where oh where did anyone get the idea that everyone is happier and nicer and kinder at Christmas? It may different in other places, but around here, people are grumpier and sometimes just downright nasty. And the crime rate skyrockets!

Now, on the up side. I love Christmas music and movies and I have a few books with Christmas based themes that I enjoy reading. I love to ride around town and look at the lights everyone else has up. This is a small town and it looks like something on a Christmas card when it's all lit up. And the food is wonderful! Whether it's a huge meal or the appetizers and snacks, I can eat until I can't move.

I do try to focus on the religious aspect of the holiday, because it's the only thing that gives me any peace through it all. If I only thought about all the other stuff, it would either drive me completely insane or make me so depressed I'd never get over it. I still expect a Christmas miracle every year. Sometimes I have to look really hard to find it, but something always happens.

Sorry if I went a little overboard there. I really do hope all of you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!! **hugs**

First off.. "Christ"mas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus "Christ". No offense but in my opinion folks who don't realize that are missing the point of the holiday. That being said I can understand how a person could celebrate Christmas, and not celebrate Christ. It's easy, what with Santa, and Frosty, and the Grinch to take his place. So more than anything, that's what Christmas means to me.. it's Jesus' Birthday :cake: . That's just what it is.. I didn't make the rules.

Other than that obvious answer, I'm inclined to agree with Matt and Alex. Christmas is better when your younger. It's exciting, and fun. No school, lots of presents, snow, candy, food, magic! What's not too like? But then you grow up and it's just not the same. I still try to like it, but I just can't enjoy the hassle.

I think one more reason why Christmas is better as a child is because when your young, the time between each Christmas seems like 100 years. And now time flies. When it feels like Christmas every two months.. you get sort of tired of it.

You just can't let the stress get to ya, ignore the hassle, and enjoy the good parts. Oh.. and Merry Christmas!

You guys pretty much summed it up. Well, not the part about the birth of Christ, I don't really care about that, but anyway... It was so much fun in ye good olde days. Dammit, you couldn't even fall asleep the night before. Now it's... Not even fun anymore, and the damn calm christmas ballads just makes me depressed. One good thing about Christmas and New year though, is that there are actually watchable TV programs and movies.

When I was younger the whole Christ aspect of it was hammered into me but it never really sunk in, or the fact I found it to be more of a story than an actual event.
Now looking at Christmas it seems a little silly in a way as it was originally a pagan festival, Jesus would of been born sometime around Marchm, the reason why it was changed to december was to gain popularity by crossing it with the pagan event.

I think for many Christmas has out grown what it was originally intended for and is more of a time to get together with people, taking a step back from all of the chaos that goes on throughout the year.
I do like getting presents for people, and it is still fun unwrapping stuff Christmas morning.

Christmas songs are something that can drive me insane >:( purely for the reason when I was in college there was this place we always went to play pool on our breaks. All the way through December they played the same Christmas songs over and over and over again, they always managed to have the same song playing as well when we came in. Christmas songs in moderation are ok, but it is something that is impossible to get away from.

I am going to keep this short.

I don't care if Jesus was born on Dec 25 or not, but that is when everyone (who does) celebrates his birthday and I am pretty sure that is fine with Him.

And that is basically all Christmas is to me anymore, sure I enjoy getting a few gifts but the are not necessary, and I enjoy the Christmas movies and foods.

Dudes! I LOVE Christmas music! That's all I listen too, or play, all season long! What's wrong with you people lol!

Christmas cartoons, like old Disney and Loony Toons are awesome too! Gotta find some of those to watch this year.

Past few days I have been thinking over Christmas, It has been enlightening in a way at how things were at one point and how things are now.
It goes back to my childhood and primary school it feels like an element of trust was broken especially in the teaching enviroment. There we had school plays, the Christmas nativity which I did'nt mind mainly because it meant we had no actual work to do.
The element that gets me is being raised and taught that this is without question the truth and it happened without having much of a choice in the matter, being at that age some of these things can change a persons mind into the direction they want.

Even when watching a film about Adam and Eve I raised a question which was along the lines of 'well where are the dinosaurs?' and all I got in response was 'don't ask stupid question'. This was not the first or the last time I raised a question that was just passed off in regards to religion it never clicked with me.

Now recently I looked into a bit of history over the whole Christmas story, all signs point to it never happened in the way it was written. Such as harad wanting the death of every male child, would'nt someone note this down? or more so be remembered today as a tyrant. Also the Joseph heading back to the town of his birth or where his family came from because it was a mass calling to do so, yet there is no record of this being a major thing which it would be.

Just simple things that people just pass off, I think if most people looked at the bible and any other religious book and raised question about it, a lot of people could open there eyes.

Also Santa is awesome!!!!
