Rubén/Zeke/Misty/Maria – Getting to Know You “I can’t believe you decked the guy.” Rubén said impressed by the story Misty was telling them all, she was one tuff cookie. Heidi would have laughed at how fem she looked, but then again, Heidi tended to look more like a teenage boy then a full grown woman, Misty on the other hand, there was no mistaken she was a woman and a tough one at that. “Well he was preaching all this shit, and scarring people not to mention those that were trying to rest. He did it right outside one of the medical tents, instead of helping people or offering words of support. Someone had to do something.” Rubén shrugged, he would have probably ignored the guy, but Misty did what she felt was best and he wasn’t there, so it was hard to say what he would have done. He could see Zeke didn’t approve, but Zeke wouldn’t say anything. “Well your brother was really helpful and very handsome.” Maria said with a gentle smile, Zeke looked at her and nodded, “yep that is John.” Misty looked at Zeke who had been quiet the whole time she was telling her story, sipping his tea an air of peace around him, he didn’t say it but something about him, told her that he didn’t approve of striking the man. The puppies where happily playing at his feet and Goliath was snuggled up in the corner sleeping, the puppies had warn him out earlier, she was relieved that they all seemed to get along. “If you don’t mind I would like to go lie down.” Maria said standing up pulling Misty out of her thoughts. “Of course you must be tired.” Rubén said as Maria nodded, “Thank you Zeke for letting us stay here.” Zeke smiled at her, “of course. You are very welcome.” He stood up to show Maria to the upstairs room, which they had all moved the supplies from the rooms upstairs to the basement and the garage to make space for people to sleep, “I know the way.” Maria said and walked off heading up the stairs. “She’s very quiet.” Rubén said looking at Misty who nodded, “that she is, I’m not sure if it’s shock or just the situation.” She said looking at Bridgett who shrugged, Bridgett too was still clearly shaken by all those they had seen and tried to help, she had fallen silent keeping her thoughts to herself. “So your brother is in the Army?” Misty said changing the topic looking at Zeke; Zeke set his cup down on the coffee table, “Yep. He has been in the National Guard most of his life, he really enjoys it, he’s a good man.” Zeke said smiling, he was always very proud of his brother and the rest of his family. “Well I would have never picked him out as your brother, I mean…he’s huge I felt like a Leprechaun next to him.” Rubén laughed, “I can relate to that. He is unnerving to say the least, but Zeke know’s how to handle him.” Rubén said beaming at the memory of the zinger Zeke hit him with when John was grilling him, only a few hours ago. “Well he seems like a good guy, really hot too.” Misty said with a playful wink at Rubén. All Rubén remember was a wall of a man looking down on him as he talked about not hurting his baby brother; Zeke. “Listen I have to know, what’s the deal with you two, I know it’s none of my business, but sense you’re letting us stay here I just.” Bridgett frowned at Misty, “I just would like to know is all.” Rubén blushed, “I suppose…” Zeke looked at him as if to let him off the hook, how did you define a relationship like this; it was the end of the world, they had only known each other for 3 days, “I think it’s safe to say we’re a couple. I mean, he already met my brother, so what else could it be.” Zeke smiled looking at Rubén who nodded happy with the explanation. Misty’s brows furrowed, “wait but Rubén said.” Zeke smirked, “We had a talk.” Misty looked between them not quite sure what to say. “Well I say good for you both.” Bridgette said looking at them with a smile, “this whole thing is going to be difficult enough and it’s better to be with someone you care about then to be alone, there are too many people left alone right now.” She said with a difficult but lovely smile. “So, if you’re not from here, where are you from Rubén?” Misty said drinking her tea. Rubén put down his cup and looked at her, “Salt Lake City, but my family is in California.” Rubén said without thinking then reminded of his parents, they had refused to leave, they must have still been in California when…when it wasn’t there anymore. Rubén felt Zeke’s hand on his leg offering some comfort. Misty wasn’t sure what to say she could feel the air get thick, “So, I come from there and I came out here on a business trip for a conference.” Rubén said looking at the room full of eyes on him, the realization that his family may not have made it out and here he was drinking tea and chatting like nothing had changed, but it had, it all had, it all seemed pointless. “What was the conference for?” Bridgette asked looking at them all trying to keep the conversation light and moving. “I work, or should say worked for Catholic Charities in Salt Lake, it was our annual conference.” Rubén said not wanting to think of his co-workers who he was hoping were ok and in the camp set up in town. “It’s not easy is it?” Misty said looking at Rubén, he looked at her knowing what she meant, “Not really, it’s hard knowing that I’m safe and sound in here well my family and friends as well as so many others are out there. We’re very lucky.” Rubén said then looked at Zeke, “I’m really very lucky.” He said his tone a little softer the comment meant exclusively for Zeke. Zeke grinned, “We’re both lucky.” Zeke said with a smile his hand still on Rubén’s leg. “I’m sure it’ll all work out, I mean there is a reason we all survived right?” Misty said not wanting to think of her mother and father. Zeke looked at her, “God has a plan for us all.” Misty started to chuckle but stopped and looked at Zeke. It wasn’t his expression or the look he was giving her, which was very passive and polite, but it was something more something deeper, after everything that had happened she believed him. Now she wasn’t overly religious but there was something about Zeke, he sounded so certain. His faith never wavering not even for an instance, “I have to know, Zeke, how did you know, how could you be so well prepared, you and Amanda, she told me about her stockpile as well. How?” She said looking at Zeke all eyes were on him; even Rubén’s Zeke took a deep breath. He felt the playful nips of the puppies and reached down to pet one. “I can’t explain it, I’ve tried with Rubén all I know is that I had to do it, it was like a compulsion at first every time I want to the store I would get a little extra then these last few weeks I would make special trips to get stuff, I would load down my car fill it up and bring it back here, paying cash for it, so no one knew where to find me or how.” He shook his head trying to make sense of it all, “I knew God had a plan for why I was doing this, but I didn’t know what. I knew that something was going to happen, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I thought I was going nuts, so I didn’t tell anyone, not a soul, but I kept doing it. I knew it was the right thing to do the smart thing.” Everyone looked at him, “How do you describe a feeling or a need? I don’t know.” Zeke was calm but trying to explain it was difficult Rubén looked at him and could see the struggle he was having, “And to think with all that hording, he could have got at least one hamburger, a hot dog, a steak or even cheese and eggs instead we have peanut butter, almonds and dried tofu goo.” Rubén said good natured Zeke shook his head, “you didn’t seem to mind at breakfast.” Rubén looked at him, “Hey you told me it eggs and bacon, and I was content to believe you, plus it really tasted good.” Misty laughed looking at the two of them, “A Vegan and Carnivore; interesting combination. I can’t wait to see what happens when Rubén starts craving meat. You might want to run and hide someone as cute as you could look awful tasty after someone’s been denied meat for a long time.” Misty said as she looked at Zeke and Rubén who were now both turning all shades of red and Bridgette was staring at her in disbelief. “Misty!” She said looking at her it was clear Misty had missed the double meaning and hadn’t thought anything of her comment. Misty thought a moment then blushed a little herself, “Oh come on you all knew what I meant get your minds out of the gutter.” The room filled with laughter at Misty’s comment temporarily taking all their minds of the reality of what was happening outside. |

Willow/Adam/Alex/Domincia - Play Time “Momma!” Lex cried as they reached the house that Alex had finally led them to, the house were Adam’s father apparently was. His eyes had come to rest on a swingset that was sitting in the back yard. “Oooooh,” Callie cooed looking at it, wiggling in her mother’s arms wanting down. “Go on,” Willow said giving Adam’s hand a squeeze. “We’ll play out here while you feel things out.” “Come on in,” Alex said walking up the front steps, frowning wondering what the hell that had meant. It wasn’t his business though and he watched Adam give his wife a kiss before following him up the stairs. Willow set down Callie and spread her arms, both children setting off as fast as they could around the side of the house to the swingset. Callie wobbled unsteadily as she followed her brother over the grass, Willow walking behind her patiently. Within what seemed like seconds Lex was going down the side, giggling happily as though there was nothing wrong in the world at all. A mminute later, Willow was helping Callie up the ladder to the slide so that she could go down too. For the first time over the last few days, she felt warm. A sense of peace flooded through her as she watched her children play. It was like nothing had happened. In their world, all was well. Mommy and Daddy were together, they were a family, and they had a swingset to play on. She turned as she heard a door open and saw a very pretty blonde woman step out of the house. Willow gave her a smile and a wave, the woman returning the gesture just as warmly. “Is this your home?” Willow asked as she came over to them. “It belongs to my family,” she replied. “I’m Domincia.” “Willow,” she said taking her hand. “This is Lex, and that one eating sand is Callie. Baby, no.” Willow stepped forward and brushed the sand off her daughter’s face. “You want to swing?” She picked her up and set her in the kiddie swing, pushing her gently. “Thank you.” “For what?” Domincia asked with a small frown. “Letting us come here,” she replied. “For taking in Sam, I know he can be a handful.” She smiled, good naturidly. It was clear that there were no hard feelings on her part towards the man, no matter how badly Sam might have treated her in the past. “He’s not that bad,” she replied leaning against a tree in the back yard. It was one of the few trees in the town that had escaped unscathed. “He’s just… lonely.” Willow didn’t say anything for a minute, as she just pushed her daughter, Lex still going up and down the slide giggling with glee. “Do you think it’s over?” “You mean all the chaos?” She asked. Willow shrugged. “I guess, I don’t know.” She smiled softly. “I just,” “I know. I feel the same way.” “Are you going to stay here?” Willow asked pushing Callie again who was swinging her little legs happily as she flew through the air. “I think so,” Domincia replied. “I mean, where else is there to go?” She looked at Willow, feeling a small surge of pity for the woman. As hard as it was for herself to deal with what was happening, this woman standing in front of her had children to think about. Little lives that she’d brought into the world… and what kind of future would they have now? What kind of future would any of them have? “I don’t know,” Willow replied. “I was thinking somewhere, remote. Away from people for a while until things settle down. Until we’re sure that the worst is behind us.” She looked up at the clearing sky. “I’m usually not this… negative but coming into town, all those check points, the military…” “It’s like something out of a movie,” she said. “Watch me! Watch me!” Lex cried taking a running start and running up the wrong way on the slide. “YEAH!” He cried, pumping his little fist in the air when he reached the top. “Good job baby,” Willow said clapping. “Yeah, it’s like out of a movie, and you know how those end up.” She gave her a small smile and then laughed. “I swear, I’m usually not so…” “I know,” Domincia replied. “I don’t think any of us are 100% ourselves.” “I don’t know,” Willow said with a yawn “I just keep feeling that we should move to the center of the country… away from fault lines and the shore and the mountains and, there’s no knowing what that impact will have done, or the repercussions it’ll have.” “Oh the worst of it is over,” Domincia said with a bright smile. “I mean what else could happen?” “I don’t know,” she replied knowing that little fact scared her more than anything else. OOC: Short I know but I ran out of time… just needed something up. I WILL get the scene written and posted tomorrow. |

Willow/Domenica – Half Valley Girl; Half Hippie “You’re not who I expected.” Domenica said after a few minutes of silence passed. They both stood watching the children play. Willow looked at her, “I’m sorry.” Domenica smiled, “I had no idea Sam’s son was who he is. I mean. I don’t know I expected someone completely different.” Willow couldn’t help but chuckle, “Not a fan?” Willow said and Domenica frowned, “I didn’t say that.” Willow laughed, “you didn’t have too, I saw your face when you left the house.” Domenica looked at her, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to give you that impression.” “Don’t be, to each his own, who are we to judge?” Willow said with a half smile, looking up as they heard what sounded like a large jet flying low overhead. “Wow!” Willow said looking up. Domenica looked up at it, “C-27s Spartan cargo plane. We saw one earlier, they were heading farther inland, maybe Iowa or one of the other sites, Denver maybe.” Willow looked at her a little surprised that she would know that, “my family’s military, Sam thinks I’m putting too much faith in our military right now, he says I’m too trusting.” She said with a little chuckle. Willow was still looking at her, “I don’t know, maybe I am, maybe I want to believe that things will be alright, that we’ll rebuild that somehow everything will work out and we’ll all pull together. Foolish right?” Domenica said not taking her eyes off the plane until it was out of site, “Normally it would be flying a lot higher, but I don’t think it can right now, with all the dust and stuff.” Lex and Calli where both looking at the plane once it was gone they want back to the swings. “Do you have family?” Willow asked watching Domenica, seeing the worry in her face. “I hope so. My folks were on their way here, along with the brother and sister and their families, but, well they should have been here, they should have beaten us here. My brother might have stopped to help, he’s out of the military now, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have tried, the rest…I don’t know.” Again Domenica stopped. Looking around, “If things get bad, were are you thinking about going?” Domenica asked looking at Willow watching her reaction, “farther to the center of the country I guess, the farm belt; Kansas or Iowa maybe. I’m not sure, I just.” Domenica sighed, “it doesn’t feel right.” Willow nodded. “I suppose I could leave a note for them, my family I mean.” Domenica said with a half smile, hope trying to fill her voice, but it was a struggle. “If you don’t mind, I would like to go with you guys, if, and it’s a big if things get bad. I mean Sam’s been so sweet and I’ve kind of grown fond of him and the others.” She added. Willow smiled, “You’re assuming he’ll go with us.” Willow said pushing Lex on the swing then Callie taking turns between them as Domenica watched. “He will. I have no doubt. All he did was talk about you guys on the way, he almost got into a fight with the military convoy leader, Lt. Johnson, we were with getting here, when they suggested that we stay in Las Vegas, I thought he was going to kill them with his bare hands.” Domenica smiled at the memory. “He’s a Doll, but a tuff old bird you know.” Willow looked at her, “I suppose, we weren’t very close.” Domenica nodded, “I know and I think he’s really sorry about that. I think he has a lot of regrets for you both.” Domenica looked at Willow as she watched her kids as they played, “Do you have family, are they alright?” Domenica asked watching Willow think. “They live on compound out in the middle of no where, I’m not even sure they know what happened.” Willow said with a warm glow. “Oh I’m sorry.” Domenica said looking at her, a worried look on her face. Willow shrugged, “somehow I think if Park City made it, then I would bet they did as well, good thing they are hippies, they’re used to roughing it.” Willow said with a laugh. “Wait real hippies, they still exist, I thought they all became University Teachers and worked in Berkeley trying to relive the glory days or when they were relevant.” Domenica said and Willow laughed, “Those aren’t really hippies, but yea my parents live on a hippy commune, no power, no phones, nothing like that.” Domenica nodded a little surprised, how did you go from nothing to being married to a rockstar, “It must have been hard growing up like that.” Willow looked at her oddly, “Not really it was normal.” Domenica was baffled. “I don’t think I could have done that, I mean we went camping and hiking and all that, but to live that way all the time; no no. I needed my hair drier and curling iron, not to mention the mall and clothes.” Willow was smiling at her, “where did you grow up Beverly Hills?” She said with a laugh and Domenica frowned a little, “Mission Viejo.” Willow laughed even harder, “You were a Val.” Domenica smiled, “I’m only half Valley Girl.” Willow smiled, “and I’m only Half Hippie.” “God what a pair.” Domenica smiled they couldn’t really be more different. Laughing she looked at Willow. “I was even a cheerleader. How’s that for stereo types?” With that Willow burst out laughing wiping away the tears in her eyes saying, “Save the Cheerleader, save the world.” Domenica laughed, “Maybe I should have kept that to myself.” Willow looked at her, “No really thank you. I just, the whole Valley girl cheerleader, growing up I think we would have hated each other and now look at us.” Domenica nodded, “God works in mysterious ways I guess.” Willow nodded, “I suppose she does.” As the laughter died down Domenica watched the kids play, thinking of her nephew and niece, “you have beautiful children.” Willow smiled, “Thanks. Do you have any?” Willow wasn’t sure she wanted to ask, but it was the polite response and it sort of slipped out. “Oh no, I’m not married. I’m single.” Willow nodded, noting that wasn’t the questions, but she had a feeling, based on the gold cross that hung from Domenica’s neck that she was religious, so the answer made sense in a way. Willow nodded, “Well they’re a hand full.” Domenica nodded watching them, “I love kids, my job, I worked with lots of kids.” Willow looked at her, “where did you work?” Domenica smiled, “I worked for Disney I was in charge of Guest Relations at one of the hotels in Anaheim.” Willow nodded as Lex’s ears perked up, “Mickey. Momma I want to see Mickey.” Willow wasn’t sure what to say but it was Domenica who answered, “Mickey’s really busy right now, little guy, there are a whole lot of people hurt and scarred and when that happens it’s Mickey’s job to go and help them first so they’re not scarred anymore. He has special permission to fly around and brighten people’s day.” Lex looked at her, his eyes, big, “really?” She smiled and nodded, “but I have special things to give good boys and girls who aren’t hurt so Mickey will know that they are being looked after, when we go in the house I’ll give you and your sister something special from Mickey himself. How’s that sound?” Lex smiled, “cooool” He went back to his swinging. Willow mouthed, “Thanks.” Domenica stood up dusting off her knees and her hands, “No worries, it’s the least I can do.” They both heard the door open and watched a figured walk out, “Oy, you ok out here.” Gareth said walking over to Willow and Domenica. “Willow this is Gareth, Gareth this is Willow, Adam’s wife.” Gareth nodded, “the block with all the ink. Interesting chap.” He said shaking Willow’s hand, he slipped and arm around Domenica’s waste effortlessly, “That would be him.” Willow said. “ah he and Sam are still talking, I needed the break I hope you don’t mind?” Domenica smiled, “Of course not.” Willow smiled, “wait, aren’t you suppose to be in the England.” He smiled, “I’m on Holiday, lucky that, right?” Domenica smiled, “He was at the hotel and decided to come with us.” She said. Willow still just looked at him. She loved Tourchwood and Ianto Jones, but now did not seem the right time to gush all over him. “And who are the two little ones.” He said looking at the kids playing, “Lex and Callie.” Willow said watching her kids play. He nodded, “Well we’re getting quite the house full aren’t we?” Domenica nodded, “Yep and I wouldn’t want it any other way.” She smiled resting her hand on his taking comfort in it. |

Misty laughed long and hard at her joke, as did Ruben and Zeke. It felt good to laugh, after everything that had happened. The laughter eventually stopped, however, and Misty was sorry for it. But rather then try to make a lame joke to keep the laughter moving, she let it die. There was silence afterwards, the only sounds that of the four puppies romping around Goliath, who stoically tried to ignore the younger dogs. Ruben took a swig of water, and cleared his throat, "Well, I for one am curious as to how an eighteen year old girl managed to knock out a fully grown man with one punch. Uh, no disrespect intended, of course," Ruben said hurriedly, perhaps worried that Misty would take it as a sexist remark. Misty smiled, not at all offended, "Well, I've been taking martial arts since I was a little girl. I used to love watching those old Bruce Lee movies, y'know, the one's were the voices are dubbed?" Ruben nodded, "I used to watch those movies a lot, too, Bruce Lee was the man." Misty grinned, "Right. Well, I was a huge fan, and I begged my folks..." Misty stopped, the mention of her folks bringing to mind the thoughts of leaving them behind. Zeke must have caught something in her expression, he set down his tea, and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "It's ok, Misty, we don't have to talk about this if you don't want to." Misty shook her head, "No, it's ok, I'll be ok." She took a deep breath, "I'm just worried about my folks, like you guys are. Not knowing if their ok, where they are, if they survived. It's eating at me." "I'm sure their fine, Misty," Ruben said, "We all survived, there's no reason to assume our families didn't survive." "I know," Misty said, "We just have to wait and see." More silence followed, until Zeke cleared his throat, "So, you watched a lot of Bruce Lee movies?" Misty smiled at him, grateful for changing the subject, "Yea. That's what got me into martial arts. I took lessons at a local karate school, and I actually competed in a few tournaments, though I never actually won any of them Still, I'm fully qualified to kick your asses if the need arises, so don't take me lightly." Ruben and Zeke chuckled, "I'll keep that in mind," Ruben said, "So, is that how you met Bridgette?" he asked, gestruing to Bridgette, who was asleep in the other room. "In a way, yea. We havn't known each other very long, surprisingly enough, though it seems like forever." Misty smiled, remembering, "I was 16, on my way to a tournament, when my car blew out a tire. I was in the middle of nowere, but there was a service station not far down the road." "How did you get your car there?" Zeke asked, "Did Bridgette come along and help you push it?" "Nope," Misty said, "I walked." "Walked?" Ruben said, "In the middle of no where? How far was it?" Misty thought for a second, "Maybe ten miles." Both men looked at her, slightly speechless, "You had to walk ten miles, in the middle of nowhere, to get to a service station?" "Yup." Misty said, "And it sucke,d too. Anyways, i get to the service station, after hiking those ten miles, and I'm about dehydrated. I go inside, and theres some big asshole, tryin to hold up the place. I see Bridgette, behind the counter, and she actually seemed to be holding up pretty well." Misty chuckled, remembering what happened next, "I obviousley didn't have a cell phonme, or I might have snuck out and called the cops, so instead, I sneak up behind the guy, I guess he was preoccupied, he hadn't seen me come in, and I crack him over the head with the coffee pot. He goes down, and I stare at Bridgette, and I say 'I need a new tire', and about then is when I pass out." "Good one," Zeke said, "Y'know, thats not a bad pick-up line." "I've heard worse," Misty said. "So, anyway, the next thing I know, I wake up, and Bridgette is over me, checking my pulse, or whatever, holding a bottle of water." Misty chuckled, "I can'y quite describe to you guys how it felt, waking up, and seeing her, like some Greek Goddess, and she had tied up the crook too. I dunno, maybe it is stupid, but I was hooked." "I don't think that sounds stupid at all," Zeke said, "And the rest is history, I take it?" "Pretty much. That day, I still fought in the tournament after she drove me back to my car, I came in third, me and Bridgette went out for a celebratory dinner, and then..." Misty blushed, "Well, I'll spare you the details." Ruben laughed, "Love at first sight, huh?" "I guess you could call it that." Misty said, "Anyways, thats my origin story, for what its worth." Misty yawned, "Fuck, I'm tired. I'm gonna get some sleep, ok?" "Sure thing," Zeke said, "Take a rest, you've earned it." "Thanks, guys," Misty said, getting up, walking toward the room were Bridgette was sleeping. "Keep the door open," Ruben said, teasingly, and Misty casually gave him the bird as she shut the door behind her. OOC: short, and took me too long to write, but here t is |

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man whose gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!" | |

Rubén/Zeke – Warnings Rubén looked in the mirror, the house was quiet, they finished securing the doors and windows on the first floor much to Zeke’s grumbling. John had said he would make sure that he had patrols come by the house every hour just to make sure things were safe, as safe as they could be. So far confrontations had been limited in the area and people had seemed to pull together, Rubén couldn’t help but wonder if it had something to do with Zeke; he had a calming affect on most people and maybe somehow that had filled the area. Maybe his aurora was so strong it was like a bubble slowing growing past the house into the neighborhood and expanding around the town. He chuckled that sounded completely ridiculous, but somehow it seemed almost believable. How else do you describe it? Rubén put down the tooth brush, somehow the water and power were still working and would be, according to John they had secured both the town’s power plant and water pumps and were somehow keeping them going. Rubén checked the fly on his pajamas making sure to not have a repeat performance from the night before; he blushed at the thought. Zeke didn’t mention it, but how much had he seen and for how long he still wanted to crawl under a rock and die over that. He pushed the thoughts from his mind and wondered what it would be like to sleep next to Zeke instead, maybe he should sleep on the floor; no the puppies would be there. The basement was filled with everything from the upstairs bedrooms and the downstairs rooms. Maria was in one room and Bridgette and Misty were in the other. Zeke gave his brother a key to the house in case he wanted to come and sleep in the living room. So that left one bed; Zeke’s and Zeke was in it waiting for him, so they would have to sleep together. It was warm enough, he thought, he could go and sleep in the back yard, it was a nice night. All he needed was a blanket and a pillow. “Hey, Mr. Man, you can’t hide in there all night.” He heard from the outside; he blushed again. “I’m not. I’ll be right out.” Rubén said looking at the clock that wasn’t working on the wall the batteries had drained for some reason. He hadn’t been in there that long had he? Maybe he should wear a tee-shirt and sweats. He shook his head, tee-shirts felt like they would cut off his air supply and sweats got too hot. “Ugh.” He said, thinking about what waited for him on the other side of the door. He was being stupid. He opened the door and walked into the bedroom almost tripping over one of the puppies in the dark. There was a little yip and then a scamper. “You alright?” He heard Zeke say, “I’m fine.” Rubén said. “Not you. I was talking to Barker.” Rubén frowned, “Oh.” Zeke could hear his town, “I knew you were alright, I could see you.” “Ah.” Rubén said. Making his way carefully to the side of the bed, “I hope you don’t mind I like to sleep on the right.” Zeke laughed, “Not a problem, I sleep on the left.” “Well that’s convenient.” Rubén laughed crawling into the bed, “Wow, it’s already warm, what are you furnace?” Zeke just laughed putting down the puppy. Rubén could hear Zeke putter around; it must have been a tissue and his allergy pills from the sound of things. “It’s pretty strange isn’t it? Zeke said. “What do you mean?” Rubén asked trying to get comfortable under the covers. “Just how this all worked out; meeting Misty, Maria and Bridgette and of course you.” Rubén couldn’t help by smile at the last part, it made him happy to hear that, “Well I don’t know about the others, but meeting you…I mean wow.” Rubén said and added, “it’s kind of like everything I’ve been through my whole life brought me to this point, to be here with you in Iowa….podunk Iowa, I might add.” He said with a chuckle and they both fell quiet. Rubén turned to his side his eyes finally adjusting to the darkness, he didn’t need to see to feel the unease coming from Zeke, “you don’t think it’s over do you, something else is coming. Right?” Zeke sighed, “I don’t know, it’s just a feeling that we haven’t seen the worst yet.” Rubén frowned, “I wish there was something I could say or do, but I can’t. I’m sorry.” Rubén said looking at him. “We’ll be fine it’s the others I’m worried about.” Zeke said turning and looking at Rubén, “Others what others?” He asked not completely understanding him. “All the people still out there, there are so many and I’m…” His soft voice trailed off he turned and was looking Rubén, “We’re safe here. That’s all I know for sure. We’re safe and you’re here and I know you love me.” Rubén could see his smile. Rubén grinned and moved in and kissed Zeke softly on the lips, “Yep, that I do.” Rubén pulled his face away, “It’s so strange you know. I mean this whole thing.” Zeke met his eyes, “It’s all new for me, too.” Rubén heard the puppies playing and he let out a heavy sigh, “new is an understatement.” He said moving his face away from Zeke. Thinking about what his body wanted, but what his mind was scared to death to try, the last time. It had been so bad so wrong and now. None of that mattered. He only remembered parts of it anyway, the feelings of being used, the feelings of not even really enjoying it, then the feeling of waking up in the hospital. That was so long ago, it took so long to remember and to forgive himself. Not to mention accepting what happened and not giving it any power over him. That was the hard part accepting the fact that he wouldn’t remember it all, accepting his portion of what happen and then letting it all go. Chalking it up to one of the hardest learning experiences of his life all marching him closer to here to this spot in time. “Hey where are you?” Zeke asked, touching the side of Rubén’s face. Rubén smiled, “the past looking at some old ghosts I guess.” “Care to share?” Zeke asked looking at Rubén trying to make out his expressions. Rubén thought a moment, don’t give it any power, you control it, “I’ve only every done this once and it ended badly.” Rubén said facing Zeke again, “I’m not very experienced with things, what people do and I’ve never shared the bed with anyone before.” He sighed, “it’s important to me that you know this, the last time. The last time, I sort of don’t really remember it, it’s not that it was that long ago, which it was I was in my early twenties, it’s just that I ended up in the hospital…I sort of couldn’t handle it. You know, I mean my family and all that. I kind of fell apart and.” He let out a long sigh it was difficult to talk about, but he needed to tell Zeke, “I locked myself in my garage with my car engine running, the police and paramedics found me, thanks to one of my neighbors. I’m a lot better now, I mean I know who I am and this is just a very small part of my life, I’ve taken what I needed to from it, to learn from it and moved on. It has no power over me. But you need to understand that. You need to know is all. You should know that I’m not experienced.” He finally said with a little chuckle and he looked at Zeke, who was simply smiling at him. Zeke touched his face again, “Thank you.” Rubén looked at him, “for what?” Zeke leaned in and kissed his check gently, “for trusting me enough to tell me the truth, for being open with me.” Zeke said, Rubén could hear the relaxed tone of his voice and it helped him relax. “I told you I don’t lie, and for you to share this with me was important for you and I appreciate it. Plus, now you don’t have to hide or try to cover things up about this.” “Well I just felt like you needed to know.” Rubén said looking at him. They heard the puppies whimper at the foot of the bed suddenly, something wasn’t right, both Rubén and Zeke moved to look down at them, “They’re shivering.” Rubén said looking at Zeke, “but it’s not cold and they’re all huddled together.” Zeke frowned, something was coming and he wasn’t the only one to sense it. |

Shrimp Po'Boy
|
Sam raided the cabin's fridge and found that the only three drinks were Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, and Bottled water. He mulled the decision over and settled on the Dr. Pepper. The fridge was empty save for the soda, which made sense since the Generator had been off for awhile. He looked at the bottom of the can and saw there were still 2 months left on the "freshness Date" (What a load of horseshit THAT was, Sam thought) and popped the tab. He walked out of the kitchen and came face to face with Adam. Sam tried to speak and couldn't. The look of worry that flashed into Adam's eyes was apparent. It was the look fluffy always carried when there were people in the house that weren't himself or Adam. Fluffy was, no pun intended, a fraidy cat. Any time there were guests, Fluffy would hide in Sam's clothes closet, only coming out when Everyone was gone or their few guests were in bed for the night. The look said, What am I in for now. Sam felt sick. Had he really been that much of an asshole? His mind set, You bet. If it were an olympic event, you would have medaled. Sam's lips formed into a smile and he said, "Hello." Adam said, "Hi." And with that, the conversation lapsed into silence. Sam stepped closer and akwardly hugged Adam. Adam returned the hug, but it was wary. They released each other and Sam stepped back a step again. He looked over Adam's shoulder, then around. He said, "where's Willow? Did she..." Adam said, "She's fine, dad. She's outside with the kids." Sam smiled sadly and said, "Letting you grease the skids?" Adam snorted and said, "Can you blame her, dad?" Sam sighed and chugged the rest of the pop. He set the can on the window sill and let out a quiet burp. Sam said, "No, I can't blame her. I don't blame her at all. I think...I mean....Let's go outside, can we?" Adam said, "PLEASE dad. We just got here. Let's not start a scene, okay? A bunch of people just died and the last thing I need is for you and her to get into a fight and cause a scene in front of a bunch of people we've just....." Sam said, more firmly, "Adam." Adam looked at him. They stared at each other for a long time. Sam said, "Let's go outside. Please." Adam was silent for a moment. He brushed some imaginary dust off of his T-shirt and the looked back up, saying, "Okay. But I swear to God if you...." Sam put a hand on Adam's shoulder and shook his head. Adam's wary look turned curious, wondering just what was going on. He seemed to fear that there was an unlit stick of dynamite getting ready to be lit. He finally turned and stepped out the door. Sam followed. They stepped into the warm sunshine and Sam looked over and saw the kids at play. Lex looked over from the swing and said, "Grandpa?" Sam smiled. Alex slid off of the swing and Callie slowly followed. Sam's eyes met willow's and he saw the same look of fear that had passed into Adam's eyes flash in hers. Sam knelt down as the grandkids approached and hugged them both. He said, I'm very happy to see you." Callie said, "Are you going to be here for awhile?" Sam tried to remember the last time he'd seen them and drew a blank. It hadn't been recently, and they had grown. Sam said, "Well, I sure hope I'll be here for awhile." Alex said, "Good. Thank you for the presents on Christmas. They were all so cool!" Sam looked up at Adam, and Adam met his gaze levelly. In spite of everything, Adam had come to bat for him, providing toys and goodies from "Grandpa" even though there was no reason for him too. Sam said, "Well, you're suite welcome. In fact, I've got more goodies for you. But first i want to talk to your mommy and daddy. Do you want to play with Domenica for awhile while we talk? I promise it will be worth your while." Lex said, "Okay." Callie nodded. Sam got to his feet and said, "Domenica? Can you keep an eye on them for a bit?" Domenica nodded. Sam looked at Willow, then at Adam and said, "Can i talk with you for a bit? Please?" Adam again paused, then nodded. Willow looked more reluctant, but walked over to Adam and, almost protectively, slid an arm around him. Sam led the way around the house to a picnic table and they sat down on one side, next to each other. Sam stood on the opposite side. He was silent for a moment, trying to collect his thoughts. He looked over their heads, into the land beyond. Adam siad, "What's up, dad? Does this have something to do with....." Sam said, "Adam, it has nothing to do with you, or with Williow. It has everything to do with me." He looked into their faces, then away. He pondered his next words, then said, "I've been a total, miserable son of a bitch. I've been a total asshole, and by all rights, both of you should hate me. In all reality, maybe you do. I've done nothing but cause you both pain and grief and in the land of bastards, I would be king." He looked back at them. Both had matching open mouths, apparently never in their wildest dreams expecting these words to be coming out of pious Samuel Aaron Barkley's mouth. Sam slowly sat down and looked at the chipped wooden top of the picnic table. Sam said, I've done a terrible thing. To both of you." He looked up at them, tears springing into his eyes. He said, "Monica meant the world to me, and I'm a vengeful person. When she died, there were only two people I could, in my mind, blame. You, or God. Being a catholic, i couldn't blame God, so I blamed you, an innocent. Someone who had no control over what happened. I concentrated so much on the agony of death that i ignored the miracle of life. That's something I will never be able to make up to you. Not now, not ever." Sam let out a shuddering sigh and pulled his hanky from the pocket of the track suit. He dabbed at his eyes and blew his nose. He said, "and then, when you found music, I put you down for it. Because it wasn't what *I* wanted you to do. what the Hell did i know? A blue-collar electrician who made co-owner just in time for the world to end. When you went for it all the way though, I was happy." He looked at Adam directly. He said, "I swear to God, i was happy. It was never what i wanted but you became a superstar, and how can you not be happy about that?" Adam opened his mouth to say something but Sam said, "Let me finish. Now that I've started, I can't stop." Adam closed his mouth again, and nodded. Sam looked away for a moment, then back. He said, "I went to all your High School concerts. I sat in the back, and you probably never saw me. But I was there. And when I happened onto one of your CDs, I bought it. I can't lie and say i listened to it, because Oldies are my thing, but i bought it, because it was yours. You childhood...It was such a wasted potential, on my part. So many things I could have done, and I didn't do any of them. And I hate myself for it." His eyes started streaming again, and he wiped at them. He looked at Willow and said, "Then you came into his life. And I didn't like you because you took Adam away from his "Proper" girlfriend. The girlfriend that *I* thought he should be with. Again, I wasn't thinking about what he wanted, I was thinking about what *I* wanted. So i treated you like dirt and you have every right to hate me too. Because the great Sam barkley sees, knows, and tells all. I've been as horrible a father-in-law to you as i have been a father to Adam, and again, it's something I'll never be able to make up to you." Sam sighed again. He said, "Then the grandkids were born, and that was just a token effort, because why should the great Sam Barkley deign to visit and get to know his grandchildren? They were born from the woman that the Great Sam Barkley declared undeserving of his son. I have been....I've been a total shit. I don't deserve pity, or forgiveness. I'm a foolish old man who dug his hole and buried himself with it. You followed your dreams and became a successful, happily married musician to a beautiful woman who absolutely thinks the world of you, and I lived the way i thought I should be living and spent my time alone eating t.v. dinners and occasionally petting the cat." Sam looked at the table again and said, "You kept me relevant to Lex and callie. In spite of everything I did you kept me relevant and made me out to be Father Christmas when all i was was the Grinch. I don't....I don't know what to say. All I can say is that I'm totally and completely sorry. Sorry for everything I've done to you, and sorry for everything I've done to you. My only consolation is that you turned out to be a terrific father, which is a hell of an accomplishment, because i certainly wasn't...a very good....Role model for you..." Sam started weeping fully, burying his face in his hands. He sat there, weeping, as Adam and Willow looked at themselves, then at him, in stunned silence. |

Adam, Sam, Willow Adam was speechless. He glanced over at his wife and saw that she was, too. His father had never opened up like this before. It threw Adam off. Still, when his father started to sob, Adam wrapped his arms around his dad in a tight hug and kissed his cheek. This was his father. He could choose to hold all the past shit against him, or he could accept his apology and get on with it. It was the end of the world, what would you do? He stood holding his father for what seemed like forever, just offering silent support. Finally, Sam pulled away and blew his nose again. “Crying like an old woman,” he said meekly. “Dad, it’s ok. Look at me,” Sam saw tears running down his son’s face, too. “Which is worse, a pathetic old man like you crying or a big tough tattooed punk star?” He smiled and wiped his eyes. Sam did the same. “Well, you may have a point there, Adam,” Sam commented. Willow looked on and smiled. It was nice to see Sam treating Adam like he deserved to be treated. It was nice to see Adam taking the high road and forgiving his father instead of stomping on the apology like a child. It would be nice to have Sam in their lives, and in the kids’ lives. “I’ve got some things for the kids,” Sam started. Adam grinned. “Really?” He was blown away. Where had his dad gone? “Are you sure you’re Sam Barkley and not some imposter?” he teased. Sam chuckled. “Well, I guess I deserved that.” “Nah,” Adam smirked. “Do you want me to go get them?” “Sure.” Adam bounded over to the swing set to collect the kids, leaving Sam standing there with Willow. Sam regarded her for a moment. She was a lovely woman, and not strange at all. He’d really been a jerk, not even giving her a chance. “Did you leave your pointy hat in the bus?” Sam smirked. Willow laughed. “Oh, we only wear the pointy hats when it’s cold. Black hats are much too hot for summer wear.” Sam appreciated that she was trying to respond to his humor. Adam hadn’t done too badly with his life, after all. He was healthy, happy, had a wonderful wife who adored him and kids that idolized him. Sam felt very proud of his son. Despite everything that he’d done to try to bring Adam down, he’d still managed to succeed in life. Good for you, boy, Sam thought. “Penny for your thoughts?” Willow said, bringing her hand up to her eyes to block the sun as she looked at him. “I was just thinking ….” He paused. “Adam turned out just fine,” he corrected himself. Willow’s musical laughter filled the air again and she hugged Sam. “Maybe Domenica was right about you!” “Domencia?” Sam said, suddenly nervous. “Yeah, she said you were an old softie,” Willow beamed. Sam shrugged, flustered. “Oh, I don’t know about that…” Adam trekked back with Calli on his hip and Lex at his side. Sam was grateful for the distraction. Talking about his feelings with his son’s wife wasn’t exactly something he was dying to do. “Lex, Calli, Grandpa told me he has something for you!” Adam said in his higher-pitched Daddy Voice. “YAY!” Lex screamed, as Calli clapped and grinned. “That’s right, kids, Grandpa has got a lot of presents for you!” Sam smiled, and led the squealing children into the cabin to discover all the wondrous Disney toys he’d brought for them. Adam held Willow while watching the kids play with their new toys, and his eyes met his father’s. “Thank you, Dad.” |
