Rubén/Sam – Silver Stub

Rubén heard the door to the townhouse open and he saw Sam peak in looking to see if the coast was clear, “Hi Sam.” Rubén said he was sitting on the couch, he had found a journal and started writing personal notes in it and ideas and random thoughts. He was finding it a good way to clear his thoughts. Sam saw him and walked in, “Where’s Zeke?” He asked looking a little pensive. Rubén smiled a wicked little smile, “well after the 15 man orgy with butter and chocolate he decided to go out and round up another group for another go, but this time we are going to use peanut-butter and whip-cream.” Sam frowned and Rubén chuckled putting the journal down, “He’s upstairs resting, he needed a break, he needed the rest he’s been going non stop.” Sam nodded and looked over his shoulder, “now like we practiced whoever is the most quiet gets another one of the juice boxes.” Sam held a finger up to his mouth. The kids walked in each with their hand over their mouths to not make a noise.

Sam pointed to the stairs, “Uncle Zeke is sleeping we need to be quiet.” Lex nodded taking Callie’s hand as the slowly walked in. Sam watched the kids but it was the puppies and Goliath that made the noise, they were in the house and started to rough house. Sam gave them a look, unlike anything Rubén had ever seen, and they were quiet in a flash and heading to the kitchen. Rubén looked at him amazed, “how’d you do that.” Sam grinned, “Lex go get two juice boxes for you and Callie; one each.” Lex nodded, his little hand still over his mouth his free hand holding Callie’s and they quickly walked off.

Sam went over to the couch and sat down and looked at Rubén the walk had done him good, he had gone over and looked at what would be the hospital, it was coming along and there was going to be a lot of work, but it would be good and he felt like he would enjoy doing it. He looked at Rubén and thought for a minute, “you know you don’t strike me as a fag.” Sam said, he was being nice and honest which made it all the more funny to Rubén, how should a gay man look, right now he was sitting in sweats and a tee-shirt, he had finished a run on Zeke’s treadmill, which he found in the basement, thank goodness and some other minor work out equipment mostly bands, but it was still good to work out.

Rubén looked at Sam, “and you don’t strike me as an old fart electrician; funny that.” Rubén said good natured. Sam shook his head, “I’m sorry, I mean you don’t…ah never mind.”

Rubén grinned as Lex peak out; can we play ‘Shoots and Ladder’? Rubén smiled, “of course.” Lex grinned and popped back in the kitchen “My father.” Rubén started, looking at Sam then continuing, “he didn’t want to have a sissy for a son so he toughened me up.” Rubén said with a gentle smile the memory not as painful anymore. Sam understood at once what Rubén said, “He beat you.” It was a statement not a question. Rubén shrugged, “It was a long time ago, I’ve made my peace with him. In school I was on the football team, so it makes you tough, I guess.”

“I’m sorry.” Sam said and Rubén smiled, “Thank you Sam, but like I said it was a long time ago and it made me who I am now, so it all worked out. So how did things go at the hospital, do you think you can help them out?”

Sam studied him a minute then answered, “Was there ever any doubt?” He said as he rubbed the back of his head.

“Nope, Zeke knew you would be good here a perfect fit and very needed.” Rubén looked at some of the plans for the school and the hospital on the coffee table he would need to do a site review and check in with everyone; maybe tomorrow, “I don’t suppose you would be interested in teaching electricity too, we’re going to need to train people on these skills and I think you’re the resident expert.” Rubén said watching Sam, it was Sam’s turn to shrug, “I suppose.”

Rubén beamed his dimples filling his face and even Sam was taken back by how handsome he was, “excellent. I knew I could count on you.”

Sam and Rubén sat in silence for several minutes they could hear the kids playing in the kitchen they were trying to teach the puppies the game, Rubén didn’t even want to think of what condition the game would be in when the kids where finished with it. “How do you do it?” Sam asked looking at Rubén. Rubén wasn’t sure what he was asking, “How do I do what? Continue to have faith that Zeke knows what he’s doing and that we’re on the right path…” Sam shook his head he blushed a little, “Not that, how do you…I mean these days things have changed. When I met my wife, it was easy, now with all this stuff. I mean look at me. I’m a grumpy old man.” At that Rubén couldn’t help but laugh.

Sam wasn’t sure why he was telling Rubén this, maybe it was because he felt like he could talk to him he seemed like a good man, sure he was Mexican and a Homo, but still he seemed like a good person easy to talk to. “Sam you’re not a grumpy old man. What are you 46 or 47…that’s nothing. You’re only 10 or 11 years older then me. That isn’t old.” Sam looked at him, “I’m 53.” Rubén shrugged, “So you’re 53…that’s not old. I know people younger then me who would be all over a handsome man like you. You have all your hair, you’re in good shape, what’s not to find attractive.” Sam looked at him, “You’re being polite.” Sam said a little surprised that Rubén was as old as he was, he didn’t look it.

Rubén looked at him, “ok what’s her name?” He asked watching him; Sam shifted and looked at Rubén his face crimson. “No on.” Rubén thought a minute the only females he knew of in Sam’s group where Domenica and Willow; Willow was his daughter-in-law so that left, “Domenica?” Rubén said looking at Sam. Sam crossed his arms in front of his chest in a very defensive posture and said nothing.

“Well you’re quite the Silver Fox, very nice. I’m sure she’s lovely.” Rubén said watching Sam as he turned even redder. “Oh Sam relax, I’m not going to say anything. There is nothing wrong with a crush.”

“This coming from the handsome gay guy who has probably had sex with millions of men, you know I have cable I’ve seen Queer as Folk.” Sam said a little gruffer then was his intent. Rubén sighed, “Actually the grand total, not that it matters is 2; Zeke and another person.” Sam looked at him surprised, “Don’t make fun.” Rubén looked at him, “I’m very serious, and I don’t really count the first time because…well because it…look never mind about that, but listen Sam, there is nothing wrong with you liking her.” Sam sighed, “It’s not right, I’m old enough to be her father, plus every guy in our group was after her, and trust me compared to them I can’t compete.”

Rubén looked at him, “it’s not always about looks, it’s about the person inside that counts, if you like her then when you see hear again put yourself out there, don’t be a Walter.” Sam looked at him, “A who?” Rubén grinned, “A Walter I thought you said you had cable, he’s a character of a comedian ventriloquist Jeff Dunham, he’s one of my favorite characters of his, Walter is this grumpy old man he’s feisty and ornery but not nearly as handsome as you.” Rubén said smiling at him.

Sam adjusted in his seat suddenly feeling a little uncomfortable was Rubén hitting on him, isn’t that what they did? No. Sam thought that was just the TV. “Well she ain’t here and I can’t ride in on my white horse to rescue her, so what can I do? Adam will get that honor.” Rubén shrugged, “We don’t know gods plan, none of us do, so don’t count yourself out of the race Sam. At least not yet.”

Lex peaked out, “Grandpa, Barker is cheating he keeps messing up the game.” Sam stood up, “Well we can’t have the dog cheating now can we?” Sam walked over the kitchen door, “Thanks for the chat Rubén” Rubén nodded and picked up his journal, “my pleasure you Silver Stud.” Rubén gave Sam a wink watching Sam blush and disappear behind the door, he heard Lex say, “What’s a Silver Stub, Grandpa?” Rubén chuckled and picked up his pen to write.
May it be said, when the sun sets on your life, you made a difference.

Alex/Adam - Welcome to Fort Dodge

The rest of the drive passed mostly in silence. They spent most of it staring out the window, periodically using the CB Radio.

“So, what’re we gonna once we hit Fort Dodge?” Alex asked.

“Dunno…there’ll be more weapons there, hopefully. Plus some military vehicles, we could use those for our assault on Rita’s team.”

“You think there’ll be a tank there? I’ve always wanted to drive a tank.” Alex said with a grin, looking over at Adam.

“Watch the road please!”

“Shit!” Alex jerked the wheel to the left, narrowly missing a sign reading ‘FORT DODGE 15 MI.’ “Almost there, thank the Dear and Fluffy Lord.”

“Dude…you, driving a tank…that’s just terrifying.”

“It’d be fun…and besides, it’s not exactly like there’s a whole bunch of people I could potentially kill.”

“True, I mean, fuck, I’m genuinely surprised there are still as many folks as we’ve encountered alive.”

“Exactly. Here we are: nuclear fuckin’ winter, and we’re pretty much living out some bastardized mix of The Stand and The Road, except of course as far as the parallels to The Road go we’ve got a cross-country journey under nuclear winter. I’m neither widowed nor travelling with my son….I’ve got no kids that I know of.”

“‘That you know of?’”

“What can I say? I had a bunch of flings and one night stands in college.”

“Ah.”

“But really, like I said. Just the nuclear winter scenario. No wife, no kids, my dad ain’t dying…he’s been dead for about twelve years.”

“Sorry to hear that.”

“Thanks. But honestly, the only possible similarity that could arise is me finding out I’ve got a kid, plus there are no cannibals like there were in the book.”

“Yet.”

“Well thank you Captain Bring Down.”

“Just making an observation is all…and really, you’re the one going on about nuclear winter. Pull over. I gotta take a leak.”

“No prob. I could use a break too.” Alex pulled the Jeep to the curb, “you go first, I’ll guard the car.”

“Sounds good.”

Adam returned from the small rocky outcropping he’d used, and Alex sauntered over. Soon they were back in the car and they’d entered Fort Dodge, Iowa. Alex pulled the jeep into a parking lot outside of a 7-11. The two men got out and stretched.

“Shopping spree?”

“Sounds good. Lead the way,” Alex indicated.

Adam led the way to the doors and quickly turned around, his fist connecting with Alex’s jaw and he stumbled to the pavement. He was flat on his back when Adam put his foot on Alex’s chest and cocked his shotgun.

“The fuck!” Alex reached into his holster, pulling his shotgun out. “The fuck was that for asshole?”

“ You being a stubborn fucking tool!”

“Wait…what?”

“All that ‘Wyoming doesn’t exist’ shit man! If we hadn’t fuckin’ detoured we’d be in Ankeny and Rita never would’ve fucking found us!”

Alex cocked his shotgun, “you don’t know that you arrogant little shit!”

“C’mon man, they were near the Wyoming border and you had to claim it didn’t exist forcing us to prove it to you!”

“Hey, I never said I wanted to visit that state man, and I was fucking joking around. Apparently you people don’t know sarcasm when you hear it!”

“Well maybe if you didn’t sound permanently sarcastic, we’d pick up on it from time to time.”

“Oh…the little boy doesn’t understand sarcasm…look, I feel bad about them getting taken, but it ain’t nobody’s fault but that bitch Rita’s. She’d have found us regardless. She was probably drawn to us just like we’re drawn to this Zeke guy.”

“True…still doesn’t change the fact I’m fucking pissed.” Wit that, Adam adjust his sight and pulled the trigger, barely missing Alex’s ear. “We don’t get them back, and you have my promise. Next time, I won’t fucking miss.” With, that he spit on Alex’s face and removed his foot, striding towards the store.

Alex slowly and unsteadily clambered to his feet, finger jammed in his right ear. “Shit! I’m fuckin’ deaf!”
