![]() The High School of Notre Dame THSOND is a roleplay based on the concept of the Disney 'Hunchback of Notre Dame', but put in a modern setting. That setting is a Catholic high school in English-speaking Quebec. The school, Notre Dame CHS, used to be one of the best and nicest in Canada, and some parts of it are still so, but with the arrival of Vice-Principal Professor Claude Frollo, five years ago, things began to take a turn for the worse. Frollo now holds parts of the school under an iron fist; injustice is everywhere and punishment is harsh. The only reprieve is the arts department of the school, which has managed to keep out of Frollo's view and remian a friendly and fun place. Frollo's story is a sad one. For many years, he was married, to a woman of Romani origins named Alya. But he was most ambitious, and he neglected her because of his career. During his long absences, his wife began to wander... Frollo only learned of the affair she struck up when she was five months pregnant with another man's child. He was furious, and while he did not devorce her, because of his exceedingly strict beliefs, he did refuse to see her again for a very long time. Too long, in fact. During his stubborn absence, Alya went into premature labour, three weeks before the due date. A day later, a child was born... a child who, by cruel chance, was so hideously deformed that the nurses gasped in horror upon seeing him. Alya died hours later, due to complications in the birth. The child, however, appeared to be otherwise quite healthy. His legal 'father' was sent for. Frollo now found himself caretaker to an illigitimate son with a deformity too extreme to hide. He blamed his wife, hating her and her race for her unfaithfulness. In his anger, he gave the child a cruel name, a name which means half-formed... Quasimodo. The boy was kept out of school and educated by his legal father, and he grew up kind and gentle, healthy and normal despite his deformity. The High School is now experiencing some very turbulent times. Frollo's hatred of the Gypsies, based upon his wife's betrayal, causes daily conflict with the large Romani population of the school. Students of Gypsy origins are punished for any crime, no matter how small. But the Gypsies have the favour of the school at large, and there are whispers of rebellion against the hated Professor Frollo. And to make matters worse, young Quasimodo, now a teenager and yearning for access to the world at large, has just started classes at Notre Dame High... Story and characters © Disney and Victor Hugo, but all are adapted by me for the new setting. |
