So at the end of the week I know the cutscenes are blank because the voice-overs were broadcast, but do we know, or have any idea, what was said during these cut-scenes? It's a bit unrealistic to try and put voice back into the game (the music isn't even in yet) but if there was a rough idea of what was said it would probably be reasonably simple to hack in "subtitles" for those scenes, wouldn't it? Just an idea to give AST a bit more of the story. Playing without music and renaming my save files is fine, but I feel a bit weird making up fake dialogue for all these cutscenes. |

Unfortunately, we don't know what was said during those cutscenes, so at this point in time, there isn't anything that can be done. Unless someone in Japan that happened to transcribe what was said comes forward

Ah ... Well, even without knowing exactly what was said, the ingame text that we do have, in addition to the characters we see in the scenes, and the beginning of the next day, give a pretty good hint of what was going on. It would still probably be pretty possible to write up brief text for those scenes, and hack it in. It's probably low priority because there are still game-play issues that are being worked on though. |

I know Tales of Phantasia had an English graphic that was just sitting on a higher layer than the Japanese graphic for the title screen. There was a part with vocals, and there were sub-titles in english for that scene, but they were over a black screen. I don't think there were any other vocals in that game though, at least not that were sub-titled, but in theory couldn't something similar to the 'graphic overlap' be done for the scenes in AST? Instead of having dialog, I think it would be easy, and effective, to apply a brown/gold tint to the screen, and then have a brief summary Text as the end scene plays out. I guess the most difficult part (looking from my prospective as a total noob) would be to find where the data for that part of the game is, and making sure that adding the text (or graphic for the text?) doesn't mess up anything else that has already been fixed in the patches. I'm just speaking hypothetically though, so it may be alot harder than I am making it out to be. |

On the subject of "Spoken dialog" in SNES games, "Star Ocean" featured an almost ~all~ English dubbed opening "movie" (in place of the Japanese subtitles at the bottom of the screen explaining HOW the game starts out). So it ~IS~ do-able... but DeJap put a HUGE amount of work into doing their patch, and I'm sure it would be a pretty big project to put in English spoken dialog. Though that would be sweet.

From what I understand from reading about the Tales of Phantasia translation, in order to put voice in the game they would have to record it, then break it up into several small sound-bytes in order for it to be emulated properly. I think they mentioned something similar to 1200 sound samples would be needed to dub the opening of Tales of Phantasia. |

No, actually even though it may sound strange, the opening cutscene was spoken in English in the original game, so DeJap did actually not change it all all. |

I don't find that strange. Golden Axe III wasn't released outside of Japan until last month, yet its ingame text was entirely in English (although the manual was still entirely in Japanese). The Japanese seem to view using English as being hip or something. |
