ohhhh. sorry i usually don't use that to describe the first LOZ game. i googled it after i posted that and felt kind of like a jackass for not knowing :P

sometimes i get the english versions of the japanese names for games confused with fan-made hacks. i blame it on the US not subtitling that game !!

Anyway, DMA transfer is quite complicated. I did it 2 times until now (one to let the correct character appear in the restoration after week over, one to fix the sword bug in the restoration and one to let the infinity symbol appear for the magical key in TQ/FQ).

DMA transfer isn't complicated at all. Infact it's one of the simplest things to do on the SNES to transfer data to the graphics hardware. :P

Now, maybe you are the correct man to do the job once then ^_^
I thought about something like on the screen below, but maybe this is too hard to hack?

I e.g. don't know hw to point to graphical bytes... sure I understand how to count the bytes but I don't know how to give the beginning point of the count, e.g. start at C0, CB bank or whatever. For this reason I had to change a Ganon invisible tile with the magic key. What caused one bug.

Anyway, how is your project going on. If we shall upload anything on the site, please tell us :)

I'd like to see a text box like that in the game... but it's really not 100% needed... especially as it will give a delay while people are supposed to read it and "wait". :P
I'm officially retired from beta testing, and resign my duties to those who have the time to do it.

Now, you know how hard it is to find out which TRE is just now activated.
I think it would be neat to have them like this displayed... and surely, you have even less time to play then :P

I know how hard it is to find the activated TREs... it's a pain. ANd well... I don't want anything in-game that will take away more time. Grrrrr.

Tre will you please just play the Third Quest verions of the game and stop whining about the time restraints?

But anyway, while there is no question that the text boxes should subtract the same amount of time they did in the original broadcast, it would also be much more enjoyable if rather than waiting for that time to pass (usually just a minute per box) one could skip ahead and close the box by pressing a button.

There are 7 wait signs in week 1. The first one (shoot sword beams) is 20 seconds or so. The last in week 4 is 40 seconds. I do not know if it is necessary to make a button press, but in any case better, because the small textbox is read in 5 seconds...

But since I never played the restoration, how is the game play actually? Is there enough time actually? Week 4 is maybe tough, since you should be in D7 and have to get the magic sword/red ring in between...

well, week 4 is definitely more difficult (i use that term loosely), but you still have enough time for everything. if i remember correctly in the videos the boxes were only up for at most 30 seconds (maybe 40), but that really doesn't sap too much out of playtime. you still can finish week 4 in enough time, because let's face it, the dungeons at the end of the game aren't any more difficult than the ones at the beginning and end because you have better items (presumably) and have become very accustomed to the gameplay after playing for 3 hours (at that point).

so i don't think the text boxes would really interfere with the timing aspects of the game. and since its emulation, couldn't you just hit the fast forward key when you're done reading??? :P

To realise this patch, these things should be noted:

- change the tiles inside the text box borders to display the graphic in blue palette (white letters on transparent BG are not well readable).
- build sentences (every letter is 2 bytes).
- Point to them week/time related (branches) with a BG palette change to dark blue (or simply copy the letters to another place, change the transparent bg to dark blue and point to those instead).
- Display them with the correct x/y coordinates

At least this was my mechanism if I had the time and knowledge. Place is enough (e.g. where Roto's unused crappy title screen tiles are placed).

The time that a text box is displayed shouldn't be a problem to shorten to 10 seconds or so. Normally this is done with a loop -> a value (e.g. FF) is loaded in the x register and every loop cycle 1 is substracted of this value, what causes a time delay, FF->FE->FD... as soon this value is 00 the game will continue.
Means we'd only have to shorten this loop value or so.

I would be against shortening the sign display time to ten seconds. It goes against the basic princible orf restoration. However, that could be an alternative/additional patch.

In the original version, the narrator explains and tells all the time - more than we can ever put in a text box - that is the reason why the time in which the box appears is also so different. If we shorten the text to the crucial infos, I think 10 - 20 seconds are fine. But that's just me...

On that note, would there be a possibility of having text around even while gameplay progresses? Assumedly we'd need to find a way to have it -not- take up more space than it needs to, though... perhaps having it scrolls somewhere near the top or bottom of the screen like a news ticker?

But don't get me wrong, I like the idea.
