*Laughs* I'm sorry, I tend to forget that not everyone has played Portal or has a copy of "The Orange Box". I think you might like the game... the basic plot is that you are a test subject of Aperture Science, and you are to solve puzzles that require you to use "portals". You have a blue portal and an orange portal, and as the game progresses you are given the ability (through the use of the portal gun) to make your own portals and use it to solve these puzzles. Sometimes it's as simple as firing the orange portal at a wall across a room completely flooded with deadly acid, and placing the blue portal on the wall behind you and entering the portal, and going to the exit that way. Other times, you'll have to set up a series of multiple portals and solve the puzzles with weighted cubes and buttons.

It likely doesn't sound like a lot of fun, but it is. I think you'd enjoy it if you played it. I actually got my Xbox 360 because of Portal (well and a few other games, but mostly portal).

Chief, I haven't seen you in a while. First Possum, now you. We just might be regaining some of our original members! ^_^

If you have an nvidia or ATI graphics card (and who doesn't?) you can get a special extended demo of Portal (called Portal: The First Slice) simply by installing Steam and completing the Free Games Offer, which also includes a couple of other minor goodies. I haven't bought The Orange Box because I'm not much for FPSes, but Portal is great fun.

and Tre, not so sure about me being original but what ever.

Anywyas heres my story of why I left if any of you care:

I left because life got real rough (funerals, and minor tension in my fmaily), then came back made like two posts, then ended up leaving again as things got really bad (more funerals, and a bad family situation, something that literaly split my entire family and left me in a bad spot only becuse Im too nice to be mean to anyone). Anyways I've recorved mostly, and while these major incidents have left large cuts they are healing...but there will still be scars in the relationship with in my family. I really dont wanna talk about it but I'll leave at this me and half of my family are fine as the other half tried to screw us over. :(

Anyways maybe I should start posting agian.....

That has happened in my family too, but not in this generation. However, legal consequences still trickle on.

@Garrett - I do have an ATI card, and considered (since ATI and Steam/Valve are like bed-buddies) going for some of their freebies. However, I don't like installing foreign software and services to my system (ie. Steam). Ah well. And I liked Portal better on 360 (controllers ftw!) over the PC... despite there being several new maps coming to the PC only.

@Chief - I take it that one half of the family decided that money was more important than family, and tried to screw you all over for it. Either way, I'm sorry that things wound up that way... and hopefully things will at least be better for the half of your family that didn't screw you guys over.

And I still see you as being about as original as me, since I recall you posted when I was fresh and new to the forums.

Steam is nothing to worry about. Its copy protection is based around server verification, whereas SecuROM 7+ and Starforce (which many non-Steam games use) install driver-level detection and bury data within the registry using invisible keys. As far as game-related intrusion goes Steam is the least of your worries. Anyway, all Valve games and even some non-Valve games require Steam, so you'll run into it one day whether you want to or not.

As for controllers, I think Portal and other Source-based games support them right out of the box, and if not you can use Xpadder or the like. If you buy the receiver Microsoft makes you can even use your wireless 360 controllers, and titles with the Games for Windows branding will automatically recognise it (all Games for Windows titles support controllers, with the exception of strategy games and other such things that are unsuited to it).

The best part about Steam is that games don't just vanish when they get old. For $10 you can get various games from the '90s, and because they have been patched to work with modern systems they'll run correctly even if the original versions might not. I certainly wouldn't be without Steam, or GameTap for that matter. Ah, GameTap... ^_^ If Nintendo was really clever they'd re-imagine the Virtual Console as a Wii-based clone of GameTap. They'd make crazy amounts of money and everyone would be happy. It would also remove the frustration of very early games such as Mario Bros. (no, not Super Mario Bros.) having the same price as more recent and much better games.

I suppose Steam would be the least of my worries... but at the same time, I've never really gotten into the whole "Games on my PC" phase of gaming. I still use my computers for business and for downloading movies (which in turn go to blank DVDs) and games (which tend to end up burned onto blank CD-Rs and put in the Dreamcast). I've yet to install a single game to my computers that wasn't on an emulator of some sort. All my gaming takes place on consoles, and always has.

And I'm familiar with Xpadder (I'm actually one of the mods there, helping out the creator a little bit here and there), but I use Xpadder mostly for navigating on my computer with the controller, or as a remote control for viewing files that I don't put on DVDs. I'd use it for gaming, but I don't have any games that require the keyboard exclusively.

Basically, I bought Orange Box on my 360 because it's the easier way for me to do things. Plus, when I learned I could download a ton of "Arcade" titles (Tempest, Asteroids, Pacman and Mrs. Pacman) I wanted the 360 even more. I could have gone the "PC gamer" route, but I didn't.

The overly enthused BS-X nerd.
Nintendo makes crazy amounts of money on their current Virtual Console selling madness. I don't think they'll change anything without some extreme pressure.
