Well I hope that Garrett can help you then. I myself prefer to just go with DOS and command prompts over emulating DOS. Either way, if worse comes to worse, you could always try to run it on Windows 98, and under real DOS. I know that should work for you.
I'm officially retired from beta testing, and resign my duties to those who have the time to do it.

I actually used DOS on an old computer when I was younger.
When I want to change drives, I type in something like "C:" or "C:\".

Garrett seems to actually have gotten through this spectacular mess of a program, so maybe he'll be able to write up some kind of guide for us noobs... maybe in echange for our immortal souls?

Here's my DOSBox guide. Note that the D-Fend descriptions are currently for the old version (not Reloaded) so some things are slightly different.

The reason why you can't change to the C drive is because you have to mount it first, e.g. mount C C:\games will mount your real C:\games folder as DOSBox's emulated C:\ drive. Anyway, the guide (hopefully) explains it better.

This game doesn't need any special configuration, so getting it running is fairly straightforward.

For D-Fend Reloaded:
1. Download the profile attached with this post.
2. Extract the game to a DAUGHTER subdirectory of DOSBox's VirtualHD directory.
3. Load D-Fend Reloaded and choose File>Import>Import prof file.
4. Import the profile you downloaded at the first step.
5. Launch the "Daughter of Serpents" entry in the games list.

For DOSBox:
For this example I'll assume you've got the game in C:\games\Daughter. Change the steps appropriately if you don't.

Launch DOSBox and type the following, hitting enter after each line:

mount c c:\games
c:
cd daughter
serpents

All going well you should now be greeted with the Eldritch Games logo followed by the title screen. Music, the mouse, etc. should all work fine right out of the box.

Thanks Garrett, the instructions to run DOS box alone worked! ...although I can't really say I understand why I had to mount the DOSGames folder rather than just drive d or the "daughter" folder. [Edit]Actually, I think I figured that out now. Basically I told DOS Box to treat that folder in that drive as if it was the drive, right?[/edit]
But it did work ^_^

Now, I'd like to figure out this D-Fend business, but I need you to shed some lights on this part:

Bwuh? Subdirectory of Virtual HD?

When you install D-Fend Reloaded it should create a VirtualHD directory in the DOSBox directory, and it expects the games to be placed in subdirectories there. Of course you can change this location in the preferences.

So I couldjust change it to the directory where I keep all DOS games? How?
I've tried going to File > Program Options then to the DOSBox tab and there changed the "Path to Free Dos" (it was the only one I could find that had Virtual HD writtin in it) but that doesn't seem to help.

The game folder. By default it will read C:\Program Files\DOSBox\VirtualHD\ or similar. You can either type a path in or use the folder button to the right to browse to the one you want. Obviously the target folder has to exist before you can get D-Fend to use it.

Still can't get the damn thing to work. Guess I'm stuck with typing DOSBox instructions -_-

By the way, considering most of your posts here concern playing games for free, wouldn't Commie Miyamoto approve of them?
