Smarty Plants: Inside the World's Only Plant-Intelligence Lab!!

I thought I'd bring this up: do you, or do you NOT, believe that other life-forms besides humans, and/or animals in general, are capable of thinking and having emotions?!

Personally, I say YES!!

I've always had that feeling, always will!! :D

I extend this to Fungi as well!!

And to Protists too!!

That's a rather biological, philosophic discussion actually. And a good question. I study biology, so I try to give you a sincere answer.

All biologic behaviour is steered by genes. It makes no difference if you look at viruses, bacteria, plants, animals, humans. Also, our behaviour is rather steered by genes (resp. their exprimised products, proteins and hormons which makes you angry, feel sympathy, love and so forth).

Intelligence itself is rather abstract, and you have to determine which form of intelligence you mean. A worm is more intelligent than a bacteria, a toad more intelligent than a worm, a dog more intelligent than a toad... and we humans most likely are the most intelligent animals on earth.

Ok, to your questions: surely dogs can feel emotions. Angryness, happiness... as farther a living form is developed as more emotions it can have.
Thinking... you know we most think in a language simply due to the reason we just have one. Animals do not have a language and are thus incapable of cognitive thinking.
But they most likely can think in images. Watching a dog sleeping you will notice leg movements. This dog maybe dreams running over a field.
And most animals know about cause and effect. "If I wave my tail I rather get food than if I bite into the hand."

Intelligence envolves as a social effect. Predators that hunt in a social group (human, wolves) have to be intelligent to know what the other parts are doing.
A grassing cow doesn't need much intelligence (grass is overall) and a crocodile doesn't be intelligent either, cause it hunts solitary.
I think a very good method to measure intelligence in animals is to watch the parental care. As longer it takes, as more the offspring has to learn, as more intelligent the adult will be.

As for plants. It is difficult. Plants have capability to perceipe environmental factors, such as light intensity direction of light, gravity... and grow into this direction. But this all is steered by genes/hormons only.
But they have no nervous system or neuronal cells. So I guess... they are rather unintelligent. But some botanics say that plants grow better when they "feel love" from the caring person...

First off, I disagree with a LOT OF THE STUFF YOU SAID THERE CON, such as the idea that other organisms can't have languages, because, it's not a matter of whether they DON'T have languages, but whether WE are intelligent enough to understand THERE LANGUAGES!!

As for the totally IRRITTATING "We are the smartest beings there are on this planet" RUBBISH, well, I have a little something in store for you:

The Gaia Hypothesis, which proposes that our planet is a LIVING BEING!!

Man, that "there are no smarter beings, here on earth" foolishness...

Here's my feelings on THAT NONSENSE: :head explodes: :disapprove: :bomb:

HOW UTTERLY BIGOTED!!

EDIT: I also believe strongly that other living beings BESIDES humans possess spirituality, AS WELL AS BRAIN-POWER!!

Tuf Pic talking about brain power... I fear the universe might not survive this. And to think they fret over the Large Hadron Collider.

Now now, let's not be insulting here, Conn... aliens have better taste than that!

But you have to agree he's gotta be unique enough to make them curious.

I suppose so. Though in a way, I feel badly saying anything about him when he's not able to ~see~ it. It feels like posting behind his back. Plus I'm trying to be true to the "don't mock others" part of the rules. It's not easy though, not where Pic is involved.
