The Horde Lands Lore (Updated Oct. 12th, '09) Legend Of The Seven Swords Legend Of The Seven Swords Part 1 - The Shard And The Sliver No one knows how the universe began...not even the universe itself. Many gods have traveled across time to find the answer, but all they have discovered is that the universe was once a neverending exchange between two forces - the force that created the universe and the force that consumed it. As the destructive force consumed the universe, the energy created in the process would be transferred to the creative force which would then create a new universe. In the time between these two events, the creative and destructive forces would remain dormant. It is said that the first god was once a mortal who became immortal by experimenting with magic beyond his control. He offered immortality to his sister, but she did not want it. He could not bear to let her die, so as she lay on her deathbed, he made her immortal against her will. She was furious and never spoke to him again. So he vowed never to immortality to another living thing, but as the millenia passed, loneliness consumed him and the universe became his only companion - the one thing that was as eternal as him and did not judge him. At least, that's what he thought until he witnessed for the first time the death and rebirth of the universe. Everything that he had known was gone. However, he felt like a father to this new universe and did not want it to end. Thus he breathed life into the very fabric of the universe and tried to make it immortal. But the result was something he did not expect. The universe became not one entity, but two - the creative force which would become known as The Light, and the destructive force which would become known as The Dark. Both possessed power so great that it made the first god's power seem like a candle compared to a star. He attempted to befriend them, but like his sister, they resented him for what he had done to them and so they imprisoned him and his sister inside what would eventually become planets. The Light and The Dark also resented each other and fought endless battles until the fateful day when they finally managed to harm each other and each lost a small amount of their essences, which coalesced into a crystalline-like substance. They quickly realized, that they had the power to kill each other, and that should one of them die, so would the universe and no new universes could be created. Thus they decide to no longer fight openly. They would continue the process of creating and consuming the universe, but in the time between, they would avoid direct contact and would settle their conflicts with whatever lifeforms arose. The crystals which contained their lost essences were forgotten by them. However, like them, the crystals would survive the destruction and creation of each universe and became artifacts of incredible power known as the Shard Of Light and the Sliver Of Darkness. The first god and his sister would also survive into each new universe, but would be quickly re-imprisoned into planets, and it is said that some of their essences would also "bleed" into the planet creating magic crystals similar to The Shard and The Sliver, but of far less power. Background Story Long ago, a young man named Wayland lived in the village of Velor on a small island just off the coast of a much larger island known as the Horde Lands (named for the numerous barbaric hordes of humans, elves, goblins, and orcs). The people of Wayland's clan lived in relative peace from the hordes of the mainland. The small island his clan called home was also home to six other human clans. A series of misunderstandings led to war between the clans. When Wayland joined up with his clan's militia to protect his village, he accidentally uncovered a plot by a vengeful necromancer named Greygor who was manipulating the clans into war and stealing the corpses from their battles in order to raise an army of undead. Wayland travelled from village to village to settle the disputes and unite the clans against Greygor. Wayland led the combined forces of the seven clans against Greygor at his castle on the southern shore. Greygor was thought to have been destroyed and his army was defeated. The clans' newfound unity led to the formation of the Kingdom of Velor, with Wayland being crowned king. Years passed and Wayland married and had a child. However, shortly after the birth of his son, Greygor returned with a vengeance, striking without warning all across the kingdom with an army far stronger than before. Wayland, seeing the imminent defeat of his people, led the survivors to the mainland where they established a new city. Wayland quickly formed an alliance with the elves to fend off the goblins and orcs. Many years passed. As Greygor strengthened his hold on their former homeland, the Kingdom Of Velor began to spread throughout the Horde Lands. United with the elves, they began to push back and pacify the various clans of orcs and goblins. But as the Velorians spread civilization across the Horde Lands and integrated elves, orcs, and goblins into their society, Greygor was hard at work to spread his influence as well. He found his greatest tool in the Dark Elves. While many were proud and honorable warriors, an equal number were cruel and sadistic. Working in secret, Greygor used the Dark Elves to help in his corruption of the Kingdom of Velor. The peace and civility of the Horde Lands began to break down and civil war overtook the Velorians until numerous factions broke away and formed their own kingdoms. This is the state of the Lands as you set out to make a name for yourself. The fate of the Horde Lands is up to you. Will you help one of the factions to gain dominance or will you seek to spread chaos? Or perhaps you will decide to establish your own kingdom and unify the Lands as Wayland once did. That is a VERY condensed version of a novel-sized story I wrote many years ago. I intend to work many of the details of that story including history, town names, and characters into this mod.
