Marathon Budgeting: For the Poor and Frugal

adidas superstar shoes uk In the current economy, money is tight. Money is scarce. We're all after the one thing: financial freedom. Well, most of us, anyway.

With this, comes the expenses of marathon running. It's a costly interest. The traveling, the gear, and the marathon itself. It all adds up. That's why it's important to budget. Limit yourself, but do it wisely. Now, don't get me wrong: I'm not some professional with money. I don't have a finance degree. And yes, I love to spend money. But having a solid, infallible budget is important, and is what you'll hear in this article.

1. Run Locally... or where cheap (free) accommodation is available

Running locally can save a heck of a lot of money. It means you won't have to pay for accommodation. It means you won't have to fly anywhere. And although you can feel you won't get the same level of experience as you would running in a new place, you'll still have money at the end. That's the most important part.

Now, if you can't spend the night at home, you'll need accommodation. Obviously, spending the nights on the streets is far from ideal. But you'll need some way of sleeping at night. If you know someone who lives close to the marathon, ask to be their roommate. adidas ultra boost uncaged uk You don't necessarily have to be close. If you know a group of marathon runners through small groups/communities, ask there. They'd love to have you. Who knows, maybe you can even ask for bacon and eggs for breakfast. I mean, what are friendships for?

But sometimes there's nobody you know around that area. Instead, do some shopping online for accommodation. It doesn't have to be 5-star quality. You're going for one or two nights, not a month. You can deal with a half-assed place for that long. It won't kill you. You're a marathon runner, not a member of the royal family. Could you imagine Prince William and Catherine running a marathon? I'll have seen it all once I see that.

2. Traveling Cheap

If you decide you want to pack your bags and head off for a week, excellent. But make sure you've planned the cheapest route to get there. Providing you get there in one piece.

As you know, marathons are everywhere. All around the world. And you'll notice some places are far more affordable. Asian countries, for example. But you need to ask yourself a few questions: are you traveling overseas? adidas nmd mens uk Can you take advantage of the public transport? You might find that once you compile a list of questions, with answers, your job has gotten far easier.

Compare prices. Seek the specials. Find the best way to get there. But promise me one thing: promise that you'll experience the culture. Don't be too frugal.

3. Pay cash

Seriously, debt sucks. You become a slave until it's all paid. And all it does is accumulate interest. When you pay cash, this worry goes away. You know it's your hard earned cash, and not your future hard earned cash. People go into debt over the stupidest things. It could be a new console, a new phone, a new car, or, dare I say it: a marathon. Don't be one of these people. You'll regret it.

Instead, save your money. Don't plan anything until you've saved. For some, this will be easy. For others, it might pose difficulties. But as Dave Ramsey says: "act your wage."

Moral of the story: avoid debt at all costs (pun intended). Avoid it like the plague. You'll be better off.

4. Good quality accessories

adidas superstar womens sale Clothes, shoes, and other running gear is expensive. Picking up a second hand, old, gag-inducing pair of shoes isn't a good idea. They won't be good. And, because of this, you need to buy high quality gear. Renowned gear. Gear that gets your blood pumping just thinking about it. Whether it's Nike or Adidas, find something that works. You'll be better off in the long run (this time, I didn't even intend the pun).

I say this because they are long term items. Crap products will only last so long. And then you'll need to stock up in more crap products. And then you'll think... "maybe I should have just gotten that $100 pair of shoes." As long as you need it, though. Don't get something to look cool - to look rich and to feel like a professional around all your friends. That's dodging the point of the equipment. You buy because it helps you run. Simple as that.

When making the purchases, take your time. There's no rush at all. Compare shoes. Try different ones on. Make sure you like them visually, but most importantly, they work for you. You could have feet issues. Consult the guy who knows what he's doing in the store, and listen to his opinion. That's what he's there for!

The clothes are less important than shoes. Shoes are a whole different ball game, because they can damage you. But treat it the same. Find what tickles your fancy. Quality is what you're after. Visuals come next. But again: look around before jumping at an offer. Compare. Try the stuff on. Take a day to think... is it really worth it? If you don't think about it the next day, then you've just saved yourself some money.

Conclusion

Marathon running is expensive. Especially when you start out. But these four tips can reduce the cost. Both long term and short term. Debt sucks, but so do poor quality clothes. Save and be smart - don't be a slave to debt.
