Squats?

Hi,
I just a quick question, what would be the best
rules if someone wanted to use Squats in 40k?
I’m thinking Lost and the Damned, the fact that the rules
are not 100% legal hardly matters since Squats aren’t either. :blink:

Any other ideas?

Yea I'd have to say Imperial Guard aswell, with a bit of tweaking with the doc's you should be able to come up with something that would suit a squat army quite nicely

i think guard aswell
mainly due to the fact that a company called
olleys armies produces "scrunts"
wich look like short gaurd

maybe the witchhunters codex - or the deamonhunters codex

that way you have the power armoured guys and the flak armoured guys - though you could try the lost and the damned - i just don't think the traitor squads have the right feel for squats

ofcourse you could use imperial guard with spacemarine allies - all those trikes could either be bikes, attack bikes or land speeders - can't remember how they are equiped - plus the ancestor lords in exo armour was it could be terminators etc etc

If I remember rightly from "way back when", the Squats were equipped identically to the basic Imperial Army trooper (yes, there was no Guard) with possibly a few more exotic special and heavy weapon options.

Then they were -1 Move, +1 Toughness, -1 Initiative and +1 Cool (Leadership used to be 4 different stats).

Of course this was in a world before codexes, so you could build an army however the hell you wanted, though there was a d100 system for picking the squads' weapons.

Bring back Rogue Trader!

well after rogue trader - in the hallowed ground that was "2nd edition" there was the little flimsy black codex - basically it was a uber codex of codicies - and there were squats in that - rogue trader was before my time :)

If you want to have a look, I'm sure I can root out my old copy of the 2nd ed army lists - it has the ststs / options for all the units the squats had.
The only things you might want to think about are

AP values for any weapons that don't exist any more (2nd eds save modifiers suddenly look really ancient)

Points values would probably need reducing. Eg 2nd ed 10 marine squad was about 300pts, now its half that...

If you do a google search for THE SQUAT ARMY you'll get a list of squat sites but go to the one called the squat army and you can print out a whole codex including background and rules for special squat weapons

More to the point, why were Squats ever ditched? Dwarves are ace, and 40k has the ridiculously power 'space elves' (Eldar), so why not 'space dwarves'.

We all like short, tubby, bearded folk.
After all, we go to Jasons club :)

Someone said they were ditched because they were too similar to gaurd or something along those lines.

I agree space dwarfs would be ace they would for sure be my army of choice.

I also like the idea of space skaven there was a rumour a couple of years ago that they were going to be released under the name 'the hrad' but this seems to never have surfaced.

Now back to the acutal question, i would go for imperial gaurd/space marines simply because the background story would most likely link them to these two races and thus share their technology. (but iv never read any way before my time to i could be way off).

i would say maybe imperial gaurd carapace armour values (4+) becuase being the cool craftsmen i would see them as they would be able to easily create carapace. I would give them access to bolt gun technology because if they had lasgun they would just be short fat gaurd and again i can see them being able to craft cool weapons. I would also possibly stick with the toughness 4 as is generally a trait of dwarfs to be tough buggers. so pretty much the same as a space marine scout stat line with a similar points cost.

well if i remember correctly which i might not - but some of the novels, squats would wear anything from flak armour upwards - had access to lasguns, boltpistols etc, had trikes, and were nifty engineers

and from what little rules i remember the were basically dwarfs -mv 3 and t4

I'm afarid we will never see the squats surface again they were cool 'back in the day' but with GW's trend of rerelishing Rule books and codexs' I doubt you would see a new army for a while. Even in the novels and background of recent 40k squats are herdly ever mentioned, the Hrud(Space Skaven) are mentioned more then the squats but I'll doubt you will see them as all the background points to the Imperium wiping them out down to a few tribes, and if they did GW would have to take a U-turn on there background. If there will be a new army I hope it will be the Adeptus Mechanicus as they have a HUGE standing army with lots of high tech and experimental weaponery and they are metioned loads of times in Novels and background, theres a really good book (Dark Apostle I belvie it is called) and a huge combined force ot Mechanicus and Guard face a force of Word Bearers who are up to no good lol.
If someone is in my way then one of two things happen they either move or get eaten!!

Thanks for the cool ideas folks.
After a little research I have found that the Squats
were in fact eaten by the Tyranids!!! So instead of doing a
whole army of stunties I will try a add a converted unit of Squats to my Humanid
army, Squats are cool but Squats with Tyranid bio weapons are better!
