It has come to George Lucas' attention that there are parts of California that he doesn't yet own. In order to remedy this oversight, he has commissioned a new "CGI cartoon" of Star Wars. The series begins with a 90 minute episode that (in the USA at least) will get a theatrical release.

Lightsabers? Check.
Sith? Check.
Unfeasibly large numbers of faceless automatons firing blasters at each other? Check.
Yoda saying something "wise"? Check.
Obiwan thrust into the middle of everything because it seems, despite their role as the Republic's defenders, only about half a dozen of them can actually handle a "situation"? Check.
Anakin moping? Check.
A massive range of merchandise? Check.

Yes sir, it's 21st century Star Wars.

it looks promising. the style seems to be based on the samurai jack style cartoons that where done as fillers between the films. which may be the big flaw with it, i remember watching the jack version and being somewhat impressed by the speed and movement of grevious and went to the cinema fully expecting to see him climbing all over the walls only to see the weazing old man-bot

Its a mother beautiful bridge and its gonna to be there

is this going to be based on the short 5 min cartoon series that they showed on cartoon network a few years back or a seperate story?

I would imagine that this story will be a continuation of what we saw in those cartoons, as opposed to being the same story redone. However I don't know for sure.

Went to see it on Friday - very much for childen (I was the only non-escorted adult there), has some annoying bits: Zero the Hutt, and Jabba's baby son Rotta (Zero was a nothing character thrown in to give Padmé something to do), the dialogue between Anakin and his Padawan is clichéd and cringeworthy ("You might make something of yourself yet, kid", etc), and the humour involving the battle droids is sometimes grating. Also, the clone troopers still display an alarming tendancy to get up close to the droids - there seems to be a tactical reason to abandon cover, sprint up to 2 feet away from the droid lines and continue firing from there, even though the casualty rate visibly increases tenfold.

However, I don't think it's as bad as a lot of reviewers are making out - plus points include pretty much every battle scene, even including the clones' poor decision making. Anakin is more tolerable than his film counterpart, and Obi-wan is good as well.

It's not brilliant, and it's not art, but I'm going to watch the series when it starts, so I suppose it's done its job.

What about the music? With John Williams not at the helm, is it awful?

It was noticable, actually. In fact, at the beginning, you get the "A long time ago" screen, and you brace youself, and then... it's different.

This music accompanies the titles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRVE8OWzETA

God, that SUCKS.
Does a voice over read the gold scrolling text too? Heard a review on the radion that played a voice over, and sounding awful. Going on about Jabbas son and wotnot.

Actually... there is no gold scrolling text. It cuts straight from the main logo (which isn't the usual Star Wars one, but an ESB style one with 'Clone Wars' in it. From there we get a montage of different combat zones and characters fighting away, with the voiceover.

I think the reason it's been done like that is that the main cartoon will have a similar voiceover each week to recap the last episode/running plotline, and they wanted it to fit in. Remember that the cartoon series was in development long before the idea for a film came about.

Both are questions I've been trying to find answers to this morning, with no success. Toonami have a Clone Wars section on their website that is a dead link, so it could be them. In this country, they're the "action cartoon" channel of the Cartoon Network, so it would make sense for them to have it.

As for when, the official website and all other sources still say "Fall" (Autumn), so I guess next month (in America, they have definitive TV seasons when things start - the new Family Guy series is also slated for Fall).

And as a neat little way of tying that up, here's a promo poster for the next Family Guy Star Wars parody:

No, I don't know when it's going to be aired. As you can see from this list, it's near the end of the production cycle, however that's not necessarily the order in which episodes get aired. Obviously, Blue Harvest kicked off the last season, so we can live in hope that SSSD will do the same for this season (more likely they'll end with it, though).
