It's a Dirty job

IT'S pretty hard to ignore a title like Dirty Sexy Money (Channel 4, 9pm), and it's even more difficult to miss if the station on which it's being broadcast insists on trailing it morning, noon and night.

You're probably already familiar with this new series, even though it hasn't started yet. Thankfully, those adverts haven't given too much away, just whetted the appetite. However, if you're still unconvinced, a few details may change your mind.

It focuses on idealistic lawyer Nick George, who takes over from his father as the personal attorney of the Darling family. His father died in mysterious circumstances, and his new clients aren't exactly honest, law-abiding individuals. Before long, Nick is sucked into the clan's dubious world.

The plot is pretty juicy, and helped attract some of Hollywood's best character actors. Heading the cast is small-screen veteran Peter Krause, who'll be familiar thanks to his role as Nate Fisher in Six Feet Under and, more recently, as Joe Miller in mini-series The Lost Room. Jill Clayburgh and William Baldwin also star, but most interest is generated by the presence of the great Donald Sutherland.

He may not be the kind of actor who's adored by the Academy every time the Oscars come around, but most jobbing thespians will envy his impressive body of work.

Canadian Sutherland started his career in Europe, making his big-screen debut in 1964's Crypt of Horror. He went on to appear in many memorable movies, including MASH, Kelly's Heroes, Don't Look Now and Ordinary People. However, he's also worked extensively on TV.

Among his lesser- known small-screen projects have been Terry-Thomas's Sixties comedy series; gentle British crime drama Gideon's Way; The Avengers and a production of Hamlet that also starred a pre-fame Michael Caine.

Despite being one of the most prolific movie actors around, in 2005 Sutherland decided to return to TV on a more regular basis. He was nominated for an Emmy for his role in mini-series Human Trafficking and accepted one of the leads in political drama Commander in Chief, which charted the progress of the US's fictional first female president.

Here the 72-year-old star plays the intriguingly named Tripp Darling, a charming but ruthless patriarch whose money has come from nefarious activities, including people trafficking and drugs. He has five grown-up children, all with personal problems.

But he's also extraordinarily powerful, so much so, in the opening episode, he thinks he can persuade Bill Clinton to become his family's lawyer, before settling for Nick.

The series looks set to be a big hit, with Sutherland at the centre of all the action. However, whether the man himself will tune in remains to be seen. According to reports, he never misses an episode of 24, the drama which has turned his son, Kiefer, into a household name. Let's just hope they're not on at the same time.
