Maybe a win / win / win.

American Idol is such a ratings juggernaut, such a Nielsen behemoth, it can lure the biggest TV and movie stars with its Idol Gives Back 2008 special.

Idol Gives Back 2008 will air at the special time of 6: 30 p.m. Wednesday, and run until 9 p.m.

What celebrity worth a publicist, agent and personal assistant could resist pitching his favorite charity in front of so many viewers ? Not Brad Pitt. He’ll be there. I rest my case.

You want ginormous teen stars ? Miley Ray Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale will join in.

How about former Idol stars ? Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood, Elliott Yamin and Fantasia will pop in.

Do you like football ? The Manning brothers, Peyton and Eli, are showing up.

Are you old school ? Celine Dion, Bono, Heart, Annie Lennox, Mariah Carey and Gloria Estefan will be on hand. (Yeah, Mariah is old school. )

How about TV stars who just got out after 48 days of kitchen and laundry duty in the brutal and notorious hellhole that is Glendale City Jail, having done their time for drunken driving ? Yes ! Kiefer Sutherland will put in an appearance just to remind us 24 will be back next January and prove that he did suck it up and serve his sentence with the stoic resolve that would make Jack Bauer proud.

I don’t know where exactly to classify Snoop Dogg, but he’ll be there, too.

Everybody wins. Idol scores even higher ratings. Fox scores primo public relations points. Celebrities get to plug their favorite charities. Six worthy causes get money.

This year the charities are the Children’s Defense Fund, The Global Fund, the Children’s Health Fund, Make It Right, Malaria No More, and Save the Children’s U. S. Programs.

Ryan Seacrest will host solo, since “personal production pressure” forced co-host Ellen DeGeneres to drop out.

In addition to all those folks mentioned above, the parade of stars also includes Robin Williams, Forest Whitaker, Billy Crystal, Dane Cook, Jennifer Connolly, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon, Fergie, John Legend and Maroon 5.

There will be heart-tugging video clips of the stars actually hobnobbing with some of the beneficiaries, and I imagine there will be some singing along the way. You won’t get to phone to vote this week, but you will be asked to donate many, many times using a toll-free number. Many times.

Last year, the special raised $ 76 million for assorted causes. Bonaduce warning. Blame the TV writers’ strike for reality programming like this. CBS has cobbled together a celebrity talent competition featuring “wellknown personalities.” The live debut of Secret Talents of the Stars goes down at 9 p.m. today and viewers get to vote each week and one of the stars will go home.

There’s a novel concept.

In addition, there will be a panel of three judges (brilliant !) to critique the performances.

Theoretically, each celebrity gets to “fulfill his / her lifelong dream by practicing, and then performing live, supported by a headline production troupe.” Warning: The “celebrities” include Danny Bonaduce.

If that hasn’t sent you screaming for the remote control, here are the other contestants.

Clint Black will do stand-up comedy. George Takei will croon country. Malcolm-Jamal Warner will do hip-hop. Sasha Cohen will be a circus contortionist.

In addition, Sheila E. will juggle. Roy Jones Jr. will rap; Cindy Margolis does magic. Ben Stein will dance the jitterbug.

Ric Flair dances salsa. Joe Frazier sings the blues. Bridget Marquardt does a trapeze act. Mya will tap dance. Marla Maples will do gymnastics (wow ) and Bonaduce rides a unicycle.

If you have no idea who some of these “well-known personalities” are, that’s OK. It will be educational for you.

Bear’s back. Fan-favorite adventurer Bear Grylls returns to Discovery Channel with six new episodes of Man Vs. Wild starting at 8 p.m. May 2.

Grylls has achieved cult status with his survival series. The latest offerings will take Bear to the Namibian Desert, a flooded river in Zambia, Indonesia’s “ring of fire,” and into the frozen Siberian tundra. Take notes. You never know when you’ll be stuck in the treacherous Sayan Mountains with just a fountain pen, a spork, a box of paper clips and two video cameras.

CASTING NEWS John Corbett (Northern Exposure ) has landed the husband role in the Showtime comedy pilot United States of Tara. Toni Collette plays Tara. Robin Williams will pop up on a late April sweeps episode of Law & Order: SVU. (I always want to say, “Law & Order: SUV.” ) It’ll be the series’ 200 th episode. The show returns with fresh episodes April 15. Kurtwood Smith (That ’ 70 s Show ) and veteran character actress Nancy Lenehan (My Name Is Earl ) are in the CBS pilot Worst Week, an American rip-off, um, adaptation of the BBC’s The Worst Week of My Life. They play the parents of the female lead. Billy Ray Cyrus (Hannah Montana ) will be the next host of Nashville Star. For the sixth season, the competition moves from USA Network to NBC on June 9. Lisa Kudrow (Friends ) and her production company have ripped off, um, adapted the BBC series Who Do You Think You Are ? for NBC. The show traces the genealogy of a “well-known person” in each episode to discover their roots. Hey ! I believe Danny Bonaduce is free. The TV column appears Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
