Where's Royal Palm Estate?

A view of the Royal Palm Great House, a monument to the plantation era. - contributed

Part of theRoyal Palm Estate theme song says, "moments come when the sun never sets," but many are wondering if the sun has set on the series.

"Some new arrangements are being worked out with the TV station. As you know, CVM has a new majority owner and in effect, it is not business as usual," said Lennie Little-White, the show's creator, director and producer.

The television series which airs on CVM-TV wrapped up its 25th season in 2006 but did not air a final episode, giving all indications that it will be back. Fans have been looking for the return of the show that usually shoots during the end of the summer and for the season premier in October.

"We are still in negotiations with Royal Palm. We are trying to find the most economic way to produce it. A way in which Mediamix and CVM can both benefit," said Keith Campbell, programmes manager at CVM-TV.

However, there is not a clear timetable as to when Royal Palm will return to the CVM schedule. A majority of the scenes for the new season have been shot, including all the scenes at the Great House and scenes in Negril. There are, however, some scenes left to be shot in Kingston.

Mediamix, which produces the show, is a part of the CVM Group and the transaction was a little easier. The current arrangement will be more complex since Michael Lee Chin now owns a majority of the television station.

TAKING LONGER

"It is taking longer than we believe it would. We have been trying to reach a new contractual arrangement that would not seem incestuous," Little-White said.

He added, "If they are the majority shareholders, they would want to put their own imprints. They have their own ideas what they want the station to look like...It is partly my fault why it has been taking so long. I have been out of town a lot in Trelawny."

Royal Palm Estate was first aired in March of 1994 and spans 25 seasons. Each season comprised 15 episodes, except for the last three which had 13 episodes each.

"The public don't want it to come off the air so we are trying to increase to about 39 episodes for every 52 weeks. Royal Palm is to the public like The Gleaner is. If they don't get it, it is like there is nothing else," Little-White said.

It is hoped that classic episodes will be rerun starting in October leading up to the new season. Also missing is the hit summer reality show, Golden Nugget. The programme which gave its contestants a host of sometimes outlandish tasks to perform was the talk of the town over the periods it ran in 2005 and 2006, and like Royal Palm, many anticipated its return.

"Golden nugget was not renewed because it was too expensive to produce," Campbell said.

Little-White said it is important to keep Royal Palm alive because it has its value.

"There is no other show on TV that reflects everyday life in Jamaica. There are talk shows, but nothing like this. It lock down Barbados on Tuesdays and a big audience in Trinidad," Little-White said.
