I like M. Night Shyamalan, I think he's a good option, and I also like Joaquin Phoenix as an actor...BUT...I'm not sure if Shyamalan would be willing to break his traditions of filming exclusively in Pennsylvania and directing movies from his own original stories.
As for me, Alejandro González Iñárritu is like my dream choice. I think he can make Eva feel like Eva better than anybody else, the only problem is that I don't know if he'd manage to work with such special effects as the ones needed and also that the producers of this movie will probably want to dumb it down a bit so that mainstream audiences will accept it.
Another director I think could work is Mel Gibson. Yes, I know he might not make it feel as intriguing as Alejandro González Iñárritu would, but I think he still can get the deep and epic feeling. Another reason is that Gibson has already directed a movie in a foreign language and it was a success, and now he's making another one in another foreign language...who knows, maybe he could even make an Eva movie filmed in Japan and with an all Japanese cast (of course, I find this almost impossible, but it's just a thought).
