(Wish I could have replied to this thread sooner, but I just got back from vacation.)

I pretty much agree that DBZ needs to be changed up, spliced and diced, and rearranged before it can logically fit in as a movie. For instance, yeah, Korin could easily go. It'd be sad to take out characters, but the DBZ cast is just so huge that there would be no way to keep all the minor characters in the plot without confusing the audience (such as making them ask "why did we only see that cat character for ten seconds?").
Some others who could go could be Puar and even Chiaotzu. (Chiaotzu?! Yes, he may have assisted in the battle against Nappa, but after that he was extremely limited. Tien can still fight to the death even if his little buddy isn't there to sacrifice himself.)

I can remember about two or three forum revisions ago I posted a few good ideas about how Dragon Ball could work out. Vegeta, I know you've already written your script for DB and the first DBZ movie, but tell me if this sounds nice or is anything like your installment of the series:

The Red Ribbon Army is established into the beginning of the story as a massive terrorist organization which has been attacking random locations for reasons which are not understood. Grandpa Gohan and Goku don't live alone in the mountains, but rather on the outskirts of a small mountain town, and the movie begins with Gohan attending a town meeting. Many are fearing recent reports of the RR attacking small villages for unknown reasons. They are also talking about rumors of a giant ape or beast roaming the woods :P . In the meantime, Dr. Briefs and his daughter Bulma arrive in the village for some sort of meeting with the town with the offer to construct a new branch of Capsule Corp., promising increased industry, job oppurtunities, economy, etc. Their car ends up breaking down and they find help from Grandpa Gohan and Master Roshi, who keeps in touch with his student and has dropped by for a visit. There, Bulma meets Goku, and then somehow together they discover the four star Dragon Ball. Then the RR army attacks (they're searching for the DB's and have detected the one Goku has just found.) Gohan and Roshi duke it out with the army (Kamehameha anyone?), but Gohan is killed. Goku as well fights, and following Gohan's death he becomes and Oozaru in the moonlight. He won't be fifty or a hundred feet tall as in the anime, but still quite tall and massive, like Bigfoot or the Yeti or something. After the fight, Roshi takes Goku and Bulma to his island to recover. They still have the DB in possession, and Roshi maybe answers that he has heard a tale of the DBs and their wish giving powers. He suggests they visit his old student Ox King, who is rumored to as well have a DB in his treasure collection. Thus the adventure beigns.
In the meantime, the RR army realizes they have a problem. On this Earth, in this history, the existence of superpowered or extremely skilled martial artists isn't exactly common place but at least well known. The RR realize they must take every precaution necessary to halt anyone who wishes to stop them and has the ability to do so. The army is led by General Red still, but they are financed by Emperor Pilaf, who is in fact royalty but his family's land and wealth has all but disappeared. Now, Pilaf is obviously not human, but what exactly is he? A dwarf or an elf? Actually, I was thinking, since Nameks can reproduce asexually, maybe the original Piccolo, before he bacame Kami and King Piccolo, had a few spawn here and there over his long lifetime. Pilaf could be some sort of decendant of Piccolo, with evolution and mutation taking place over the generations. Pilaf agrees that the army needs to protect itself from those who are strong enough to do harm to their plan, and decides it's about time to awaken his ancestor, rumored to be extremely powerful, but he was trapped or encased or vanquished a long time ago. Tambourine, Drum, Cymbal and Piano would be Pilaf's still living ancestors as opposed to King Piccolo's servants and children. They take flight and pursue Goku throughout his adventure, while attempting to gain the Dragon Balls (the use of the DBs won't be mentioned just yet, for of course General Red wants to be taller, and Pilaf wants to control the world, and Piccolo will have his own intentions.) And with that, King Piccolo is introduced, and becomes the main antagonist. Once he is awakened, he can either destroy or take over the army.

Well, that's my idea for how the DB movie should be portrayed. I'm trying to keep the most important elements of the film while also introducing modern ideas and concerns. For instance, the RR army being labeled as a terrorist organization would be a means for modern viewers to connect to the film in a world today where we have the War on Terror, and we have seen just what terrorism can do. The audience will practically be screaming for heroes to rise up and stop the mayhem.
