That doesn't necessarily mean they won't go that far. Let's assume they do an android/Cell saga.
Picture this, there's a top secret organization called Red Ribbon plotting world domination. They've secured a newly discovered technology that assures victory.Gero is their leader. By this time Goku is a big name, a big hero and possibly the only man who can stop them so they begin plotting his demise via androids, the only power that can take him on.. Meanwhile in the distant future, Mirai trunks endures a post-apocalyptic world, Bulma is dead but before she dies she tells Trunks all sorts of stories about the heroic Goku who died saving the Earth from Freeza's second coming, long before he was born one in which Goku's timeline Trunks easily prevented. Trunks reveals who he is to Goku and warns him of the Red Ribbon Organization. Dr. Gero does not die until the escape of the bio weapon Cell.
The rest they might just take a chance with. That's just how I always saw it. As long as Gohan is involved I'm good.
