Vegeta,
What you have there is what most people think of when you talk about a karate Gi. This is a Korean/American style of uniform. What I mean are in the examples below. This is the Southern Chinese style of Kung Fu Gi. They are usually silk but can be light cotton and come in bright colors; Black, orange, red, yellow or blue. These would be acceptable substitutes I think. Remember the "Monkey King" is a Chinese story not Japanese, Korean or American. The styles of dress used in the manga and anime were Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Tibetan, with a bit of central European and space alien. ^_^

I still don't see anyone wearing that 24/7.

It works in animated form but in real life nobody would wear something like that all the time. You gotta look at this from a realistic standpoint, and what looks good on film. Not necessarilly if its perfectly honest with the series.

This movie should be about getting the story and feel of the series right. Not necessarily the look. I really think that the movie should almost create its own style to the series.

Here is EXACTLY what I think the costume for Goku should look like in a live action dragonball movie. All the pictures have the symbols maniped on to them in the way I think they should be presented on film. The first picture also has hair manniped the way that I think the hair should look like in the film. Or at least as close as I can get it with my skills.

Also it would be pants and not shorts (as shown.)

I think the type of clothing, the material, and overall look, fits Goku's character.

I would choose between two colors. Either what you see here

Posted Image

Or this color of orange.

The following pictures I didn't change the hair or the color of the suit. But I did put the symbols on them. King Kai's is on the back.

I feel that rather than a giant white patch that would stick out to much and draw attention. It should be almost burnt into the material. This could also be put into the story of how King Kai is able to put it on Goku's gi. My thought is that at first there is nothing on Goku's back, only the symbol on the front. Then King Kai burns his into Goku's back.

Anyway if I was making the movie this is the style I would go with. I think along the lines that Goku isn't a rich person by any means, and he doesn't flaunt anything. So his cloths shouldn't reflect that. They should be very simple. No silks or expensive flashy cottons.

As for the hair. I think it should all be realistic. Something that can be accomplished on a real persons hair. Although most likely everyone would still wear wigs. Like they did with wolverine. (yes that was a wig.)

Oh and the actor isn't my choice for Goku. Just happens to be the model.

:D

To see the clothing in action here is the clip that I took the caps from.

I say loose but sensible clothes for the characters most of the time. The reason being most of the time it is an unexpectaed or simply dangerous fight and you wouldn`t bring an orange outfit to that. The only possible exception would be whichever movie contains the android/cell bit because the cell games bit is an actual tournament so it would make sense for goku to wear a personalized outfit to it.

With the hair everyone`s shoulkd be normal apart from the saiyens.

I`m not suggesting it look as crazy as the series because hair just can`t do that. It should be normal hair but quite long because then when they achieve super saiyen level it would make sense that it stands up on end.

Some peopel say don`t even bother with the super saiyen hair but if you get rid of the gold hair what actual signs are there that they are powering up? The last thing any of us wants to do is let fox come up with an alternative. Thye`ll probably have them looking more like muscle bound freezas.

The progressive gold hair makes sense. Its a simple way of demonstrating how a character progresses from ss1 to ss2 to ss3.

definately keep the gold hair. But I think it should be more of a light yellow to white than gold. Just have a gold aura.

kind of like their power is so great it drains the pigment from their hair temporarily.

Or maybe it could ghet progressivly more yellow and energy-esque.

ss1-Yellow, sticking up hair.
ss2- Gold, slightly longer, definitly being forced up waves of hair.
ss3- Incredibly white yellow, long hair which sticks up rigidly and looks like it is literally made of pure energy.

You know its kind of a crappy example but I watched the movie My Super Ex Girlfriend last night. When they are telling how she got her powers her hair changes from red to blonde, from the radiation stuff.

I saw the way they did it as a way to maybe develop something kind of cool. At the least it proved to me its possible to do a hair change. With a larger budget and better cgi people working on it I could see going super saiyan as something that would be really really awesome!

EDIT: Actually I found a clip from youtube. I'm not sure how clear it is, my monitor is kind of dark.

Lol All this time talking about the hair when it's also the eyes we have to worry about! ;) Don't forget guys...SS1 blue eyes turning teal/sea green by transforming into SS2 <--no black pupils in this (might be harder to control than I imagine), until SS3

But DBZ isnt suppose to be real life like how we see it. Its a fantasy universe like Star Wars. Acutally Star Wars is a good example because the Jedi always where there same Gi or clothing all the time. The Colors are not a big deal I am sure they can get a dark orange or even a light red to fit there Gi. You dont want to change the DBZ universe around to much because then it just wouldnt be DBZ and shouldnt bear the name.

The same Color Orange Gi the Shaolin Monks use would work fine.

I think instead of getting actors and putting them in make up and what not, that Frieza, Cell, and Buu would all be best done the same way they did Davy Jones in Pirates of the Carribean Dead Mans Chest. He was all CGI but they actually had the actors participate in the acting with a grey suit and things to monitor their facial expressions, that way the actor was free to act with the other actors and be directed in a more easy way. Also this way we wouldnt have to worry about how big or buff they have to be because the CG would take care of that. I think this would be the smartest, and best way to do it.

I agree.

I find it funny though about this new process..

Pirates of caribbean tech guy: We have nighy walking around in the suit and we can therefore have the cgi character over the top of him but he can interact with other actors.

Me :Hold on. That surely is the most obvuious way to go about having a human sized cgi character? Surely you`ve been doing that for years?

Pirates of caribbean tech guy:No. we`ve never done that before today. We would nromally have no one there at all. And have the actors play off the blank space we would then put in the man-sized cgi character later.

Me :Really? What kind of idiots are you exactly? I could have thought of that on the toilet during a short lunch break. Its taken you "Cgi Masters" twenty years to figure it out? You really are stupid aren`t you! I MEAN ITS HARDLY ROCKET SCIENCE!

There would be a big difference between something on screen that looks like this:

and something that looks like this:

Granted if Dragonball was a typical martial arts film that would be closer in both look and feel to chinese martial arts films, like crouching tiger. People wearing gi's and things of that nature wouldn't look out of place. No one would see it out of the ordinary.

But the thing is that it is not what the look or feel of dragonball is. Yes it involves martial arts but the story itself doesn't really deal with martial arts. The setting in db/z is more of a modern/futuristic setting with a sci fi/fantasy theme. Not a kung fu martial arts movie. Having someone wear a martial arts gi in a live action movie with this type of setting would look out of place and out of context. In my opinion at least.
