Oh, man, this is gonna get ugly fast.

On the same day that James Cameron announces that he’s moving ahead with his long-in-gestation AVATAR, an original sci-fi screenplay that Cameron wrote, M. Night Shyamalan and Paramount Pictures have announced that Shyamalan has signed on to produce, write, and direct a possible trilogy of films based on AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER, the Nickelodeon series.

I’m not familiar with the show, but the basic description of it has always left me a little cold. Maybe there’s more to it, though, and Shyamalan obviously feels like there’s something that will take more than one movie to tell properly. Personally, I’m just interested to see what he does when working with someone else’s material, where there’s an already-existing fanbase that he has to try and please. New territory for him.

Now let the battle of the AVATARs begin!!

A couple weeks ago the web was swirling with news of M. Night Shyamalan’s next film: an adaptation of the Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. But what we didn’t know is that he has apparently been shopping around another script to a number of studios, and most of them have turned up their noses at it. The movie is supposedly called Green Planet, and it involves some sort of alien presence trying to teach humanity the error of its ways by using nature to strike back at us. According to film ick, the movie is about “the emergence of a New Eden when our flora and fauna come under the influence of something alien and make moves to take back the planet. Think The Day After Tomorrow with more smarts… a strange, upside down way of looking at ecological destruction.”

Heres the link....

1) Avatar the last airbender is NOT anime. It is americanime.

2) Avatar the last airbender sucks.

3) why would a thriller writer like Shyamalan even consider writing an adaptation for a below par cartoon show?

1) It's neither. "Avatar" is either a cartoon/animated series. It's main influence isn't Japanese in origin, either.

2) Your opinion, but overall, it's been more popular than a majority of anime that've aired here.

3) Why would an accomplished actor like Warren Beaty (sp?) direct and star in "d*** Tracy?" Probably the same answer, if M. Night was still attached to "Avatar: TLA."

I understand your points. Granted it is not japanese in origin, however it would be a bit foolhardy to suggest that the show has not been influenced by the plague of anime kids shows that have shown up in the past years (Yugioh, Pokemon, etc.) Shows like Avatar, Teen Titans and such are not direct anime however the character design and certain cultural elements have been feigned to try and bank on the popularity.

Granted Avatar has popularity however to compare it to anime is not very equal. Few anime are shown, ad nausium, on nickelodeon day in and day out. Aside from the few helpings on CTN and the general crap they spew onto WB and the other networks the best anime is usually only found on dvd or on obscure channels. The exposure isn't the same, ergo the popularity won't be the same. Being over 21 my tastes tend to be toward more in depth series like bebop and full metal, rather than avatar which is aimed at a decidedly younger age. And in this case, I make no arguement that the "Avatar Sucks" comment was pure opinion.

As for Shyamalan, it just seems too far-fetched. d*** Tracy was a huge name at one time, and there are plenty of stars that take roles that are questionable. But asking shyamalan to do avatar is like asking roseanne bar to play hercules.

(Can't believe "d*** Tracy" was edited out... it's a proper noun, fer Christ's sake!)

Back to the discussion though, and more specifically the age factor, Avatar may not be aimed people older than 14 (given it's channel), yet that's not an indicator of it's maturity when compared with other shows of it's ilk. Look at Powerpuff Girls (also anime-inspired), Samurai Jack and Invader Zim. Despite their brackets, a large number of each of those show's fans were in the 18-25 range... including me (I've got the PPG Movie poster on my wall).

As for "banking off of [anime's] popularity", the design of shows like Avatar and Teen Titans are doing that, no doubt, but they're also good shows, or at least good enough to warrent multiple seasons/DVD boxsets/prime-time airings/etc. And compared to anime in the same time/age brackets, generally beat the pants off of (or are on equal level with) thier "big eyes, small mouths" counterparts.

And the anime you mentioned aren't even competitors really, since their subject matter and edits are drastically-different from Avatar. You can't show strong animated violence at 8pm on a channel geared towards the 8-14year old crowd. That's what [as] is for, thank God.

I don't see why it's hard to imagine M. Night doing something like Avatar:TLA though. All of his films, intense thrillers they are (with the exception of The Village), all involve young children and teens dealing with some heavy s**t. It's not impossible to see him wanting to do a film about a 12-year-old who's saddled with the responsibility of ending a worldwide war within a year's time. And he's a big fan of comics too (see: Unbreakable). Avatar would be right up his alley.

Hmm... maybe Spielberg would be interested.

edit: Oh, and d*** Tracy was last relevant in the early sixties. And the movie was still aimed at children and young teens. Basically the nineties version of Sin City.

I like Avatar better than most anime I've seen. And Teen Titans as well.

I think, sometimes, that anime can be a bit overrated.

Vindictive

2) intended to cause anguish or hurt: (SPITEFUL)

I like the series and I think it will make an interesting series of films ala Harry Potter or Narnia. I posted about this some time ago when it was first announced and noted that Cameron has said that if they go forward with the film he will sue for copyright infringement if they use the name Avatar. If he does, all I can say is thanks for the free publicity. As far as I know the cartoon was using the name long before Cameron wrote his script, so good luck with that. If someone can find out the dates of each to be sure, that would be cool.
