Ok, so here it is. The true fusion of Video games and CCG/TCG's. For those unfamiliar, CCG/TCG means Collectible Card Game/Trading Card game. The most popular of with have been Magic:The Gathering, Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh. Generally companies release the cards in different sets, having new cards in every set, then making video games, gradually making newer VGs to add in the most recent cards. Now PS3 with enter the ring with "Eye of Judgement". Eye is a brand new game, which will hit the ps3 in quarter 4 of 2007. Things needed to play: PS3, "Eye" software, Sony "EyeToy", Playmat, deck of REAL cards(buyable and customizable to any extent). You set your eyetoy up on a new holder above your playmat, and play against friends via the ps3 online hookup. http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/theeyeo...ment/index.html This is a very dangerous idea. Here is my take on it, being a long time VG gamer and a former long time TCG gamer. Eye has no basis in TV, film or any other media, so this is a totally brand new game. The world of TCGs is very fickle. The only games to make it through the 12 or so years since Magic started it all have been Magic, Pokemon and Yugioh, Magic being the only ORIGINAL game and Poke and Yugi both have the little kid appeal and huge franchises fueling them. Strike 1. Not only do you have to buy the system and the game disc but you must buy the Eyetoy, which has been around a while, but not a huge seller for sony, and you must buy the cards, which traditionally come 10 per pack for $3.50 each or more. Strike 2. There is only one other game that melds VG and TCG with a constant monetary upkeep, and that is Magic Online. Magic online has millions of members who pay money for "fake" online cards. For Eye, you get real cards, but it is still an upkeep that most gamers won't care about. Strike 3. I personally think this game will flop. That or people will just buy the cards and go play a friend in town, even in our non-face to face online world. |
