This sounds really good. Looks like they have a really solid backbone for these films now. Akira is very intense and if they turn out anything like "Bladerunner", they may be looking at an Oscar down the road. Here's hoping they pick a strong cast as well.

I don't mind that they're making this into a Live Action. What bothers me is that they are changing the setting and most likely the racial/ethnic background of the characters. For this movie to continue production without backlash from fans all the characters MUST (Mandatory) be played by Japanese Actors and it needs to take place in Neo-Tokyo (Not "New Manhattan" pfft.). They don't necessarily need to film it in Tokyo (I would prefer it) but they must make it clear that its taking place in Japan and in the City of Tokyo! NO EXCEPTIONS!

Something should seriously be done about this. I have loved this Six Volume Masterpiece(Akira written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo) since I was 13. I cannot express in words how much this "news" has disturbed me. Now that we know that they have changed the setting to "Manhattan" we can only imagine what other changes they are going to make. Who here is with me and willing to tackle this problem! This is absolutely ridiculous and should be stopped at once. If they are going to make the film MAKE IT RIGHT! That means all Japanese cast and Japanese setting.

Joseph Gordon Levitt's will portray antihero Tetsuo Shima.

The actor who will portray Kaneda still hasn't been revealed. Some believe that not only will Leonardo DiCaprio produce the film but star as Kaneda as well.

Live-Action AKIRA moves forward... with the King Of The World? PLUS - Exclusive AICN - We Know who Tetsuo is!

Hey folks, Harry here - we had this story, the one about DiCaprio - about a week ago, but while Moriarty was playing with Toshi - we lost the exclusive. Dammit. However, now we have Tetsuo - which isn't as big a name as DiCaprio - but it's a damn fine name. Joseph Gordon Levitt... you know - from BRICK - the upcoming STOP LOSS and G.I. JOE! Joseph is a fine fine young actor - and I'm very much looking forward to watching him opposite Leo. Now - here's Quint with the original story...
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm not the anime expert here, but you don't need to be an anime geek to know AKIRA or to get excited about seeing it live action.

I've noticed a trend here... first we had Tobey Maguire get a live-action ROBOTECH movie moving forward, attached to produce and star, and now his buddy Leonardo DiCaprio is doing the same for AKIRA. Some friendly competition maybe? Or maybe this is just the sh*t that greases their geek-wheels.

Ruairi Robinson, who did that awesome 3-D animated short film FIFTY PERCENT GREY, will make his feature debut directing the project, which was pitched as a two-part epic.

The Hollywood Reporter story doesn't mention DiCaprio doing anything other than producing via Appian Way banner, but I have it on good authority that he is also set to star as the lead, Kaneda.

Two Akira Movies Announced
Warner Bros. planning franchise based on anime classic.
by Orlando Parfitt, IGN UK

UK, February 21, 2008 - Warner Bros. are ploughing ahead with their adaptation of the Akira graphic novels, with two live-action feature films now in production.

According to Variety, each movie will be based on three of the books in legendary artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume series that revolves around bikers and psychics in post-apocalyptic, dystopian Tokyo.

As IGN reported last year, Irish helmer Ruairi Robinson is set to make his feature debut with the first film, which WB execs have pencilled in for a summer 2009 release. Gary Whitta is writing the script.

Interestingly, Leonardo Di Caprio's production company Appian Way is also onboard – although as far as we know the star won't be involved as an actor.

The 1988 animated version of the story, directed by Otomo, became a cult classic thanks to its cutting edge animation and complex, adult plot, and a slew of writers, producers and directors have been trying to make a live-acti

I know the guy who is directing this....well I say know him, I've spoken to him a few times online (not going to say where, to protect his online identity), so we're not exactly friends but I do know how to contact him.

Now I've heard that the site is trying to move from being just a forum, to a bigger all-round anime site, so if you guys can get big enough in terms of popularity, I might be able to get an interview with him in the future...of course there's the whole issue of going through marketing and PR departments etc and the studio isn't just going to allow an interview with anyone, which is why the site needs to grow and gain popularity and be noticed.

It's no guarantee by any means, but it's something I can try to do in the future.

For the Role of Kaneda I think they should use Johnny Yong Bosch since he did the voice for Kaneda in the Pioneer dub he would be perfect for it

I have to confess, after reading that I'm actually kinda intrigued.

I reckon there's a certain mentality amongst fans of any given established franchise that it's somehow their "property," and are inherently prejudiced against any kind of remake or adaption because they perceive it as some kind of distortion of a sacred canon and a violation of their "rights" as fans. I have to admit, upon reading the phrase "Kaneda and Travis," that was the mentality I was tempted to adopt, 'cause I love Akira to bits, but I'm not going to. The fact is, filmmakers don't owe fans any kind of obligation and are entitled to follow their own vision and interpretation of the universe.

Actually, this script sounds like it clears up the biggest complaint I had with Akira to begin with; the omission of the last three volumes of the manga. In a film universally lauded for its visual spectacle, it's always seemed strange to me that it left out the bit that would've been most spectacular. If this two-film strategy actually is going to be done, then it should hopefully redress this issue.

Nevertheless, I probably won't like this film, simply because when I watch it, I'll inevitably be comparing it to the original and against a status like that, it has little hope of holding up. But that doesn't mean it'll be a bad film. In either case, it's an interesting one. I'll be keeping watch.

DiCaprio is Producing Akira, Ninja Scroll, Not Acting in Them

Self-professed "big fan of anime" says final Akira script draft is being written

Movie star and producer Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, The Assassination of Richard Nixon, The Aviator) told MTV's Splash Page that his Appian Way production company
is waiting for the final script draft for the live-action film version of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira manga. He added, "I'm a big fan of Japanese anime — that and another project called Ninja Scroll we're trying to get developed and made into a movie, and I know there a lot of loyal fans out there of the project and die-hard fans, so we're going to try to do the best job we possibly can and we're not going to make the movie until the script is in the right shape." He also emphasized that he is producing in these two projects, and that he does "not really" have any interest in acting in them.

The Variety entertainment news source reported in February that Warner Brothers and Appian Way had re-licensed the rights to remake Akira from the manga publisher Kodansha. The two companies originally planned to make two films, each of which would cover three volumes of the renowned science-fiction manga about a governmental genetic project and a teenager's attempt to save a fellow biker gang member. Otomo himself directed a popular 1988 anime film based on his own manga. Variety also reported last month that Warner Brothers and Appian Way had licensed the rights to adapt Yoshiaki Kawajiri's Ninja Scroll action anime film from the Madhouse anime studio.

We just got this on in our submissions email. It's a take on an Americanized Akira gone terribly wrong.
