At the time, few cartoons that had aired in the US had stories as complex as Speed Racer, although for today's standards it would be considered a really simple story. It was also innovating at the time for the exaggerated capabilities of the Mach 5; I guess it could have been seen as the Dragonball of racing. I saw it as a kid on re-runs, and I wasn't alive in the 60's when it originally came out, but I am just comparing it to other 60's cartoons.
