From Latino Review

Quote:

Freddie Highmore has been signed for the title role in Imagi Studios’ CG-animated motion picture Astro Boy, it was announced by producer Maryann Garger and director David Bowers.

The announcement of the casting of the award-winning actor as the voice of Astro Boy follows the release of The Spiderwick Chronicles, Highmore’s latest starring vehicle.

Maryann Garger said: “I am very thrilled that Freddie has accepted this role. He is one of the most talented and acclaimed young actors today, and absolutely ideal to portray the iconic Astro Boy.”

Commented David Bowers: “It’s terrific that Freddie has agreed to play Astro. He’s a remarkably skilled young actor, whose freshness and vitality make him perfect for the role.  Astro Boy is a beloved superhero and has captured hearts around the globe for more than 50 years. I can’t wait to see where Freddie takes him.”

Just having turned 16 on Valentine’s Day (February 14), Highmore has worked with celebrated directors such as Tim Burton, Ridley Scott and Luc Besson, and has starred alongside such top talent as Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Dustin Hoffman, Russell Crowe and Robin Williams, among
others. Highmore’s credits span live action and animation, including The Golden Compass, August Rush, Arthur and the Invisibles, A Good Year, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Finding Neverland.

Created by the “god of manga” Osamu Tezuka, Astro Boy has enjoyed great acclaim and success throughout the world, with the original animated television series airing in the 1960s and followed by subsequent versions in the 1980s and again in 2003.

CG Astro Boy Film Teaser to Be Made Public This Month

Source

Teaser already screened before corporate buyers, distributors on Wednesday

Felix Ip, the creative director of the IMAGI animation studio
, revealed in his personal blog that the teaser trailer for his studio's computer-animated Astro Boy film will be screened before the public this month. David Bowers' film revisits the Tetsuwan Atom (Mighty Atom) robot boy hero created by the manga and anime pioneer
Osamu Tezuka (Jungle Emperor/Kimba the White Lion, Metropolis, Black Jack). IMAGI already previewed the teaser to corporate film buyers and distributors at the American Film Market on Wednesday night in Santa Monica, California.

According to Ip, "the trailer will be shown to [the] public in theaters very soon (within this month)." His company also erected a promotional standee, pictured at right, at the event. The film features the scriptwriter Timothy Harris (Trading Places, Kindergarten Cop) and a cast with Freddie Highmore in the title role, Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy, Kristen Bell, and Matt Lucas. The film distributor Summit Entertainment plans to open the film in over 3,000 North American theaters on October 23, 2009.

Computer-Animated Astro Boy Film's Trailer Streamed

49-second trailer available in 4 resolutions for Osamu Tezuka's robot boy hero

The Moviefone website has begun streaming the trailer for IMAGI's computer-animated film version of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy manga. The 49-second trailer is available in 480-, 720-, and 1080-line resolutions in Apple QuickTime format, as well as in an Adobe Flash-based standard resolution. The Variety entertainment trade news source reported that the trailer would be put before DreamWorks' Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa two weeks ago and will be added to Disney's Bolt this Friday. However, readers have reported that theaters did not include the trailer with Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.

Moviefone's synopsis describes the movie as follows:

Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers. Powered by pure positive "blue" energy, Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore) is endowed with super strength, X-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly — not to mention the purest spirit on the planet.

Embarking on a journey across the planet to discover his powers, Astro Boy encounters a netherworld of robot gladiators and other comic characters, and learns the joys and emotions of being human. When he learns his friends and family are in danger, Astro Boy marshals all his awesome super powers and returns to Metro City, in a valiant effort to save everything he cares about and to embrace his place in the world.

David Bowers (Flushed Away) is directing this US$65-million adaptation of the robot boy hero created by Tezuka (Jungle Emperor/Kimba the White Lion, Metropolis, Black Jack). Timothy Harris (Trading Places, Kindergarten Cop) wrote the screenplay. The cast features Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy, Matt Lucas, and Donald Sutherland. The film will open in North America on October 23, 2009.

Shoot-- he's like the child version of superman with all the superpowers!!

I think this movie looks great, and the teaser did a good job at getting my heart racing. I will definitely plan on taking my brother if no one beats me to it. I wonder what Tezuka would say if he was still here. :)

I think the trailer looks nice. I also love the fact that the movie will have such an amazing voice cast. What I don't love so much is that it's being made by the same studio that did TMNT which I didn't like so much. We'll see...

I think that this is going to be leaps and bounds ahead of TMNT. I really do. Like you said, they have an all star cast, and from what we see from the trailer, the characters look really well adjusted to being in 3d, moreso than TMNT I think. I can't wait to see a more full size trailer of this, with more of the voice acting present.
