I thought it'd be nice to have a list readily available to the members here, so they could have a quick reference rather then having to scour google. I've started the list off by providing some of the programs(I'll add more as I remember them) I've had personal experience using. So if you're aware of any freeware(preferably ones that you've used yourself so you can vouch for it), provide a name and url of the homepage or download link at the very least and I'll update the original post. Instant Messaging/Chat AIM MSN Messenger TeamSpeak - Speak with people on a chat channel Trillian - AIM/MSN/Yahoo/bunch of other chat devices rolled into one. Xfire - Instant messaging program for gamers. Yahoo Messenger Media(audio, graphics, animation, video, etc.) Audacity Sound Editor GIMP - A graphics editor very similar to photoshop. Microsoft Gif Animator Riva FLV Encoder - great for encoding videos in FLV to get the size down to upload to youtube,myspace, etc. Submitted by Vegeta Super Video Converter -A great video conversion tool Submitted by Vegeta VLC Media Player - media player that supports many codecs Winamp Media Player - MP3 player Security(spyware protection, firewalls, anti-virus, etc.) Ad-Aware - Anti-spyware program, removes spyware/adaware AVG Antivirus Avira Antivir Spybot S&D Spyware Blaster ZoneAlarm Firewall Tools(browsers, P2P, you, etc.) Ares - Open source p2p program. Cinergy - script writing software thats used by many top Hollywood writers. It automatically inserts all the script prompts and most formatting and is really easy to use. It's called Cinergy and it's used by many top Hollywood writers. It automatically inserts all the script prompts and most formatting and is really easy to use. Go here to download it: http://www.mindstarprods.com/cinergy/scripteditor.html Also don't forget about all the great free stuff from Google. Get a username and password and you can access mail, calender, documents and spreadsheets (just like Word and Excel but better). Blog software and a lot more. I use Gmail all the time and use Documents most of the time for everything I do. Gmail also has free chat that works with Aim and with Google Desktop you can put tons of widgets on it to personalize it. It really frees you up from all that built in Windoze crap.

Night Shift Admin Posts: 2,067 Group: Admin Member #17 Joined: April 16, 2006	Well if you got a lot of viruses then the spyware programs won't work, because they only handle spyware. Did you try AVG Antivirus I use that on my computer and I haven't had any problems since I got it.

Anyone know any free DVD copying programs? I don't need it to copy copyright movies, just need it to copy burned dvd-r. Although if it can do real dvds then I'll take it.

I like to think I'm the biggest computer geek here, so here's my short list. Peer Guardian 2 - IP blocker the is a MUST if you download torrents. It will block the anti P2P groups!! Avast! - Anti Virus / Security Angry IP Scanner Imgburn - CD/DVD burner Pidgin - IM client, covers AIM, Yahoo, AOL, IRC, ICQ, and much more. K-lite - Codec pack, play any video, any audio unless it's really hard to find. hamachi - VPN software (put your computers on a LAN over the web) TeamViewer - Remote Desktop DaemonTools - Virtual CD ROM Fileant - File explorer MultiMon - Useful for 2+ monitors DisplayFusion - Wallpapers for 2+ monitors 7-zip - Free answer to winzip/winrar. Ubuntu - Free Operating System. Clonezilla - Not the easiest to use, but it is free. This is imaging software. It will make an exact copy of your hard drive. If your computer ever crashes it will restore that exact copy and you are back up and running as if nothing happened. Couple of good Firefox addons to look for. Go to Tools > Addons and search for these if you want them. Flashgot - lets you download anything (suppose to anyway. Some advanced blocking gets around this, but it works pretty well on youtube.) AdblockPlus - Block banner ads. I remember proboards always having ads on their site. Are their ads on this forum? If so I don't see them. Ok, I'm tired of listing this now. Here are some of my sources. Portable Apps - This is a site full of software designed for portable drives. Audit My PC - I site meant to help you keep your computer safe and secure. The Free Country - This is a web site devoted to free software. I only recently found it, and have not had time to give it a good going over. I cannot give you a review on this site. Aside from The Free Country I have personally used these programs and sources and stand by my word on it. These are great tools and sites that have never let me down, and offer only the best of free and open source software. Enjoy. P.S. I advise against AVG. They are recently release updates that have harmed computers by falsely detecting key Windows components as viruses. Once these components are deleted it is no longer possible to boot your Windows based OS, and you must reinstall or repair. I highly recommend AVAST! over AVG. L.V. - If you are going to pay for an antivirus PLEASE avoid Norton PLEASE! It's a waste of money. I highly recommend PC-Cillin if you are going to pay for security software. It will cover you frond to back and has NEVER let me down. Also, if you are still having problems with your computer I invite you to send me a PM and we can chat about it. I'll help you as best as I can. It might also help you to know that I work in IT, and that this is a key source of my info. I have seen too many computers come into our office running Norton Anti-virus, and must be cleaned. Just avoid anything Symantec Norton was great till these idiots messed it up.
