Well, seems it has had a pretty quiet release this past sunday, somewhat overshadowed by the looming GTA release. Has anyone else gotten this game? I have to say, after only an hour or two of play I am enjoying it. The controls feel very natural, the bikes are cool. Having retro tracks from all 5 previous games is excellent. Downsides I guess would be the rather simple control scheme and the obvious inclination to multiplayer at the expense of diverse single player, though that's not too bad.

OK, since no one is commenting, I'll turn this into a review.
Well, after 2 1/2 days of playing, I am putting this game into the classic category. It brings back a lot of the old school feel of Mario Kart, with enough new flavor to make it fun.

You start the game by creating a license, which is simply attaching one of your Mii's to one of 4 save files to keep track of your accomplishments and records. From the first load you have 12 playable characters and 4 playable cups, each with 4 tracks, and 10 available Battle tracks. As with most MK games you can play Grand Prix, Time Trial, Battle and VS.

Grand Prix
(1 player only)
Classic racing, where you go up against the computer players (a total of 12 racers instead of the old 8) in a series of 4 races. You are awarded a point total dependant on your finish standing (0 for 12th up to 15 for 1st) after 4 races whoever has the 3 highest point totals get the trophies. As is custom you start with the Mushroom and Flower cups. After completing those with a bronze or better you get the Star Cup and then the Special cup. The big add-on this time round is a set of 4 MORE cups. These start with the Shell cup and Banana Cup, then the Leaf Cup and Lightning Cup. These 4 cups are filled entirely with "Retro" tracks. meaning all tracks are exact copies of tracks from the past 5 Mario Kart console games. There are 4 each from MKDS, MK:DD, and MK64 and 2 each from MK(SNES) and MK:SC(GBA).

Time Trial/VS
(1-4 Players +wifi)
These play pretty true to form. I haven't used them much, so I may expand my opinion later.
.:EDIT:. Time Trial is where a good chunk of unlocks lie. As with past versions when you finish, it creates a ghost that you can race and try and best your time. The catch here is that it also has a special ghost you can race, these are the best times by Nintendo employees that are pretty challenging.

Battle
(1-4 Players +wifi)
The classic balloon battle has returned, as well as Coin Battle, where you drive around picking up coins and trying to hit your opponents to get their coins.
The biggest change here is that, rather than a free for all until one player is left with balloons, this is completely timed and uses teams rather than free for all. Players keep playing, respawning when all balloons are gone with a point penalty, until time is called and the team with the most points wins. The teams are full 6vs6 with little customizability. Once players choose their characters the rest of the teams are filled with CPU players (this can be disabled, however).
There are 10 Tracks, 5 brand new and 5 "Retro"(see Grand Prix) one from each previous console Mario Kart game.

Items
As always, items play a large part in this game. Making their return for this game are:
Mushroom
Triple Mushroom
Golden Mushroom
Green Shell
Triple Green Shell
Red Shell
Tripple Red Shell
Fake Item Box
Banana
Triple Banana
Lightning Bolt
Blue Shell(the only change in the classic items, this shell flies through the air until it hits the 1st place kart and causing a small explosion that spins out anyone else who hits it)
Starman

New Items include:
Mega-Mushroom - turns you giant for a short time, gives speed boost and can flatten opponents
Thundercloud - Hangs above the player for a certain amount of time, then activates shrinking the player. This can be passed off by bumping another kart.
Blooper - Squirts ink at all opponents, obscuring the screen.
Bullet Bill - Transforms player into a Bullet Bill and zooms through the course for a few seconds, flipping any opponents it hits.
Bob-Omb - when thrown ticks for a few seconds and explodes, spinning out anyone caught in the blast.
Pow Block - 3 small tremors show this item going off, and on the third it spins out anyone ahead of the user. Being in mid air negates.

Characters
Aside from the initial 12, there are 12 unlockable characters including Boo, Rosalina(mario galaxy), and "Dry" Bowser(skeleton bowser). This game also marks the debut of 2 "new" characters, Baby Peach and Baby Daisy. An interesting fact is that unlocking karts and characters is not as easy in this game, as you would think. There is also a 25th character to unlock which lets you race as one of your Miis.

Other
As well as Kart Racing, which you have 3 different Kart styles to start with, this game introduces Motorbikes (also starting with 3 styles, with more unlockable) Bikes and Karts are not specific to characters, but character size either light, medium or heavy. Initially 50CC cups are Kart only, 100CC are Bike only and 150CC is bike or kart (though once you complete the cups, you can choose bike or kart for 50 and 100). Another very interesting feature is the integration of the Mii channel. Characters around the track, even in pictures and posters around the track, take the form of Mii faces that are saved onto your Wii(most prominent in the "Mall" track). As well, when I finished the final Cup on 50CC and got my credits it showed a statue of Luigi(whom I beat the last cup with) with the head of the Mii on my "license". Not a big deal really, but cool to see the little details.

Online Multiplayer
I haven't yet tried this, however it is being hailed as the best online experience on the wii so far. Random games are easy to find, LAN and code games are fluid with no lag.

Control
There are 5 different controls schemes, Wii-mote in wheel(one included free with game $15 each for extras), Wii-mote sideways, GC, Classic Controller, and Mote+chuk. I have to say my favorite is the Mote in wheel. A solid, easy to use way to play for beginners and vets alike.

Review Opinion:
At the outset, I will admit I was a little skeptical as I finished my first GP cup. I hadn't really played a lot since MK64 (only played D.D. once, wasn't too into it) so it seemed a bit simple, I guess. However, after going through all of 50CC I am thoroughly enjoying this game. Granted I can't really see myself playing much single player once I unlock the Karts and Characters, but so far that seems like it will be a long challenge. I have finished all of 50 CC and only unlocked 1 new kart and 1 new racer. Supposedly most of them are going to be very challenging skill based unlocks. Once that is complete and I get my net hook-up, I will definitely take to the streets of the world and play online as this looks to be long lasting multiplayer potential. As compared to the past games they pretty much took the 1 "advanced" technique, snaking(a loophole in the "drift/boost" of past games used by hard-core players), and smashed it against a wall. However, the newer drift system is quite good, and requires a bit of skill to master, giving you something to work up to as you play. I will say I love the seamless inclusion of the Miis(see other) and I think while this is a lot of old school love, that the little details make this game shine.

score: 4.25/5

Extra: To show how big this game apparently is, it sold 300,000 copies on launch DAY in Japan, topping off at a clean half million within 4 days of release. That compares to MarioKart DS which sold 160k on day 1 and Double Dash with 180k. In first week sales, MK:Wii has beaten all 5 previous Wii Mario titles combined (Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Mario Party 8, and Mario Strikers Charged).
Reviews have been positive in the majority with the only major drawback being noted as the "rubberband AI".

Sorry, I meant to comment sooner.

This game is fairly amazing. I played my friend's copy, and it's so satisfying crushing the competition online.
This is way better than the overrated Super Mario Galaxy, and any Mario game on the Wii. (Apart from maybe Paper, I haven't had the chance to play it yet.)
Best multi-player on the Wii so far, and a definite favourite of mine, even if I don't own it.

Yeah, the online is getting rave reviews. My only problem is the SEVERE rubber band AI. 150cc is ridiculously cheat-filled. The computer gets obvious speed and accel boosts. One shell puts you from 1st to 12th.

That's true. I hate being first for most of the race, then being hit with one shell and moving down to 8th. :EHH?!:

Dry Bowser FTW!

I have yet to unlock Dry Bowser or outfits b and c of the Mii. I've got golds all around up through 150 and mushroom cup of mirror mode. I stopped to go back through for stars. About halfway through 100cc in that vein.

My mains are usually Mii with Blooper cart or Baby Daisy with the bike that looks like a rocket.

For the time I've played it, my mains are Dry Bowser and Yoshi. I don't have a main vehicle, but I like the Mach Bike a lot. ^_^
I was a bit put off by Baby Daisy, so I've never tried her. What's she like with her kart choices?

Same as all the other light drivers (dry bones, Toad, Troopa, other babies). I just always liked daisy, now she has a cute little baby version, it's irresistable.

I have a question. I got this a few days ago and I've been unlocking stuff. Do the rankings they give you when you win a cup have anything to do with what you unlock?

As for the game, I really like it. I still haven't gotten to play it online, but I will soon. I have to say that I really prefer to play it with the numbchuck. I tried the wheel but I just can't seem to hold it right... :frown:

P.S.

Cait loves baby peach too...:P

I played through and beat everything with the wheel, but yeah, I prefer the mote/chuk now that I'm going for skill.

As for unlockables, I didn't realize how many there are. There are a total of 24 characters, plus 3 mii outfits, and 18 individual carts, 18 individual bikes. So that means double everything you start with. Some are unlocked by winning certain cups (must get a gold). Some are unlocked in time trial, either by playing the different tracks (I think you get Funky Kong after you play every track in time trial) or by unlocking expert staff ghosts by beating the regular staff ghost by a certain amount of time.

And the final way to unlock things is indeed by your racing rank. Each time you play a grand prix cup you are graded on your driving (From worst to best E, D, C, B, A, *, **, ***) If you can get at least 1 star on each cup in a set (set being either new cups or retro cups) you unlock something. So in other words, get at least one star in Mushroom, Flower, Star and Special cups to unlock something, for instance doing that in 150cc unlocks Dry Bowser.

Also, if you manage to get gold on every cup in each cc you unlock mirror mode and Daisy as a driver.

Right now I've done that up through 100cc plus mushroom and flower on 150cc(these are getting hard).

Haven't played Mario party since 7 sadly.

But yeah, I have a main in each weight class.

Small: Baby Peach in the Big Monster Truck
Medium: Mii in the Blooper Car
Large: Waluigi in the Pirhanna Charger (probably change to Dry Bowser once I get stars on Star and Special)

I played it for the first tim Saturday at ACEN without the wheel and friggin loved it. Then my brothers got it a couple of days ago and I love it even more, mostly due to the Wii Wheel. I had no idea it would be so percise, I use it all the time now. :D

I'm mostly using Yoshi and Waluigi right now, and have only unlocked a few characters like Rosalina. Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have all the cups in all the difficultis unlocked as well as Mirror Mode. Do you guys have the Wi-Fi though? I'd love to finally face some of you guys online in a game. Here's my FC:

Oh, don't worry Stryyder, lol, I still do too. I'm trying to play Galaxy, Kart, and SSBB all at the same time. I have a lot of catching up to do.
