Well I won't waste any time, Speed Racer was just simply amazing! My heart is still racing (no pun intended).

I mean I loved absolutely EVERYTHING about the film. It was just...awesome!

It's so different from anything I've ever seen before on film. It IS without a doubt a "Live-Action Anime."

One of my favorite aspects of the film was the music! The music was great! I'm not sure what instrument that is at the beginning of the Speed Racer theme, but that sound makes quite a few cameos. And it just gave me goosebumps.

The cinematography was just beautiful! The script was just perfect! I loved every bit of it!!

I'm just getting off work and its 2:10a.m. right now, so I'm also a bit drowsy. I'm going to sleep and collect my thoughts, so that I can have a full review up and be ready to talk about it on the pod cast.

I need sleep... but I'm too excited still!!!

Go see it. I'm jealous of Vegetasgirl for getting to see it in IMAX. Make sure you tell us about it!!!!

34% at Rotten Tomatoes, this is the reason why I hate movie critics, they say it's the worst movie of 2008

There's no reason in hating critics just because they dislike a movie that you like. I mean, if you really want to see it, then you'll see it whether or not the critics liked it. When you see it, you'll decide for yourself if you liked it or not. I have actually hated a bunch of movies that critics hate too but I also love many that they hate (The Village, Hannibal, Patch Adams...)

Me? I am going to see it tonight :D. It could have gotten a negative 100 and I still would have gone to see it.

To my my like the Movie of Speed Racer. But I think the final was a bit short. For me there has been cuts in the film. :studious:

If you can name the movie that's from.

That's South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. Though Stone and Parker may have stolen it from somewhere else, I dunno.

I saw a matinιe show of the movie this morning.

:o

FREAKING.

FANTASTIC.

This movie... this is everything it should have been. I don't know what to say that Vegeta hasn't already... As an adaptation of the old cartoon, everything was PERFECT. The visuals and camera work was amazing, the actors were wonderful, the dialogue was silly and cheesy (as it SHOULD be, damnit!) the whole feel of the movie was everything the old cartoon was and more. All the aspects of the old cartoon were translated and pumped up perfectly, and the action and races had me on the edge of my seat. It was hard to hear the movie during the last couple minutes of the final race, because my heart was pounding so loudly.

...And to hell with RottenTomatoes... I've never listened to them or any other critic, and I never will. Why believe them, at all? The day when Speed Racer is anything less than a great movie is the day I turn over all my assets to the Co$ and move to Tibet to be a Yak herder.

Go see this movie. Right now. I don't care if you're about to go to bed, or if you're in your underwear, or at a funeral, or were just born, or what. If you haven't yet seen it, then go do so this very instant. Go. Now. Get up. Seriously.

Just came back from seeing it...and well, where to start...

FIRST UP: My Rating

3.5/4

Why?

I'll be absolutely honest. I went to see this movie mostly because I liked the anime even though I was losing hope for it to be good. I was somewhat thinking that I'd end up with the same opinion I had on Transformers, a movie I loved for being a fan of the show but that I knew it didn't really work as a movie (I give Transformers a rating of 2/4).

What makes Speed Racer different? Transformers was a movie that tried to be serious and well, standard. That way it would appeal to the masses and make millions of dollars. However, you CAN'T make a serious action movie out of something as campy as Transformers. That's where Transformers failed, it didn't choose the right tone for the kind of characters, story and dialogue that it had, so we ended up with a movie that tried to be a standard action movie with lines like "I'm never giving you this AllSpark!", "You're a soldier now!" or worst of all: "at the end of this day, one shall stand, and one shall fall!".

But let's talk about Speed Racer. A movie that did right the first thing it needed to do. It chose the right tone. The Wachowski brothers knew they were making a movie based on a campy, over-the-top anime with campy, over-the-top characters and campy, over-the-top dialogue. They needed to think of how something like Speed Racer could work in the real world and they went for the common sense conclusion that it just couldn't work in the real world, so they decided to make a campy, over-the-top movie.

As an adaptation, I wouldn't be exaggerating if I say that this is the most faithful adaptation of basically any non-book media that I've seen. Of course, it needed to be remodeled a little bit. The tracks in the anime were nowhere as strange as the ones in the movie, but that's because the anime was from the 60's. However, at the time of its release, the anime created the same feeling on the viewer as the movie does now.

As a movie, Speed Racer is well directed, well shot, well acted, well written and most of all well edited. Don't confuse cheesy lines with bad writing. Like I said, since the movie has the right tone, the Wachowskis knew that they would add as many cheesy lines as they wanted. It is well written because first of all, it doesn't abuse of cheesy lines (like Batman & Robin did) and because of the story, the message and the actions of the characters. I was more than impressed with the movie's message. It might give a little more importance to the anti-corporate message than the anime did but the message of family values is kept completely intact. In fact, the anti-corporate message is a big plus for this movie as it gives something for the not-so-young viewers to think about.

About the editing, well, I haven't seen a movie with such good editing in a while. It makes the movie keep an insanely fast pace and in some scenes, it helps to add humor (like in the fighting scene in the mountains). The cinematography is also out of this world. Apparently, it's the movie's visual style that's keeping a lot of people away from it, but I think its nothing less than revolutionary. So revolutionary that I think it's ahead of its time and that's why the film is getting so much hate.

Who can enjoy Speed Racer? Anyone with an open mind for something different in movies. It is definitely unlike anything that's EVER been done even in a movie of its kind. But most of all, if you're an anime fan, I guarantee YOU WILL LOVE THIS MOVIE. I don't think there will be any otaku disappointed with the visuals as a lot of the action AND the humor is 100% anime style. You will see in this movie some of the things you thought were only possible in Japanese animation. It is the ultimate Car-Fu show. Speed Racer is to car racing what Dragonball is to martial arts or what Captain Tsubasa is to s*ccer. Like it has already been said, Speed Racer is pure LIVE ACTION ANIME and I think it sets the standard for future live action anime adaptations.

Seems like you pretty much wholeheartedly liked it. So out of curiosity, why a 3.5 instead of a solid 4?

I don't give a perfect rating based on whether or not a movie has flaws. All movies have flaws, I could point out flaws in movies that I give a perfect rating. I base my ratings not only on flaws but also on the good things. I thought Speed Racer was great but there are movies with GREATER good things. I guess I forgot to mention any flaws in my review but I don't think it was really necessary. Either way, it's not really a review, it's just what I felt like writing about it at the moment. I literally had just got back home from watching it.

Just got back from seeing it, and I loved every second of it! RJ pretty much jsut summed it up, this is what a LIVE ACTION ANIME SHOULD BE! The campiness was left intact, I loved some of the cheesiness, great visuals, very humorous (especially the part with Spritle and Chim-Chim before the kiss ^_^ ), and it was just great all around. I'll put more of my opinion in tomorrow and in the podcast, but i defintiely give this movie a 7.5/10. :kaka:
